https://www.warriors.kiwi/news/2017/12/20/isp-draw-revealed-for-2018/

The Vodafone Warriors start their 2018 Intrust Super Premiership NSW campaign with back-to-back home games against North Sydney and Canterbury-Bankstown.

While the draw, just released by the New South Wales Rugby League, then hands the Vodafone Warriors a run of three fixtures on the road, they have three straight matches at home in April to give them six encounters at Mount Smart Stadium in the opening eight rounds.

The Vodafone Warriors, who were within one win of reaching the ISP grand final this year, are under the guidance of Tony Iro in 2018.

It was announced yesterday that the Intrust Super Premiership NSW will be broadcast live on Channel Nine in 2018 for the first time, in addition to increased coverage from FOX SPORTS, making it the most watched in the competition’s history.

All 24 rounds of the regular season will feature in a 1pm Saturday live slot on the Nine Network in addition to up to two games live each week on Fox Sport’s dedicated rugby league channel, Fox League on Foxtel.

“We’ve worked really hard with the 12 clubs and the broadcasters to build a draw that will take the Intrust Super Premiership NSW competition to a bigger audience than ever before,” NSWRL general manager of football Barrie-Jon Mather said.

“Next season, with the support of Channel Nine, Fox League and the NRL, the quality and the talent of the NRL’s next-generation will be on show for all to see.

“For the first time, free-to-air TV will showcase our state’s premier competition, highlighting the continued growth and quality of the league.”

The 2018 season will include three special rounds:

• Respect Round (Round 5, 7-8 April), in line with the start of the Junior League season

• Magic Round (Round 11, 19-20 May), which will see two triple-headers of Intrust Super Premiership NSW games, likely to be played at iconic venues Henson Park and North Sydney Oval

• Heritage Round (Round 20, 28-29 July), which will raise awareness and funds for Men of League.

Another feature will be a number of double-headers with the new-look Jersey Flegg Cup (Under-20 competition) or other NSWRL competitions, rather than stand-alone games.

Some good news with the bolded part in the above quoted text. Potentially more opportunities to see the ISP side play. On the flip side, it was confirmed that Iro will coach the side, with speculation that last years coach Ricky Henry, will be taking over the reins of a new NSW Cup under 20's side, as well as possibly helping out with the Top team.

So is Ayshford injured or getting a really strong hint?

Strong team that could get even stronger with 5-6 additions to it at least.

Vodafone Warriors ISP side under new coach in 2018

Vodafone Warrior general manager football Brian Smith today announced John Teina’s promotion as head coach of the club’s Intrust Super Premiership side this season.

Teina, previously the team’s assistant coach, replaces the experienced Tony Iro who moves into a fulltime role with the club’s NRL side.

“Tony has had a key role working with Stephen and his assistant coaches during the preseason and in the trials,” said Smith.

“His move up gives John a great opportunity to further his coaching career. He has been doing a terrific job with the ISP squad.”

Teina has previously had coaching positions on the Auckland club scene with the Mount Albert Lions (2015 and 2016) and four seasons with the Ellerslie Eagles.

Smith said Teina and Jersey Flegg Cup (under-20) coach Ricky Henry are also leading the Vodafone Warriors’ team of development coaches charged with nurturing the club’s promising youth players.

Soosemea hat-trick in Vodafone Warriors' opening ISP win

The Vodafone Warriors have opened their 2018 Intrust Super Premiership NSW season with a win, defeating the North Sydney Bears 30-22 in a tight tussle at Mount Smart Stadium.

Played in autumn sunshine in Auckland, both teams were looking to give their respective new coaches a win, with former NRL player Shane Millard taking the reins at North Sydney and John Teina recently promoted from assistant coach for the home side.

The home side got off to a keen start, threatening the Bears’ line with back-to-back sets. An early penalty gave the Bears good field position, and in their first real attacking opportunity, the ball was spread wide to winger Mawene Hiroti to open the scoring in the eighth minute.

In the 13th minute, following some heavy hits, the Vodafone Warriors forced a repeat set, and mirrored the Bears’ earlier play, with winger Lewis Soosemea diving over in the corner after picking up the ball off his bootlaces.

The Bears consistently created overlaps down each edge, bending the defensive line and spinning out of tackles. Poor discipline from the home side then gave the Bears multiple opportunities at the line, with fullback Braidon Burns crossing for the visitors’ second try down the right edge. Soon after, Tyrell Fuimaono gathered a bouncing kick down the left wing, and after an in-goal juggle, scored the Bears’ third try.

Soon after, Vodafone Warriors debutant fullback Hayze Perham zig-zagged across the 10-metre line, hitting a fast-running Chanel Harris-Tavita on the chest, who scored under the bar. Minutes later, captain James Bell crossed, and the goalpost denied the Warriors the chance to equalise with the conversion attempt.

The first half was punctuated by speed from Dean Hawkins and Hiroti, and straight, hard running from Vodafone Warriors forwards Patrick Sipley and late inclusion Agnatius Paasi.

The second 40 opened with the Vodafone Warriors testing the Bears’ defence, but their final tackle options were uninspired. Penalties and field position were traded for 20 minutes but neither side were able to convert as misguided passes and touches of fatigue set in.

With 18 minutes remaining, Fuimaono was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, and the Vodafone Warriors chose to take the two points, levelling the score at 16-16. With the man advantage, Soosemea soon crossed for two more tries, to complete his hat-trick, showing fancy footwork and a turn of speed.

Testament to the tit-for-tat nature of the game, the Bears rallied with a try to Vincent Leuluai with nine minutes remaining. The Vodafone Warriors then added two points after the Bears were penalised for a strip, requiring the Bears to score twice to level. The home side retained possession and ran the clock down to emerge victorious.

Overall, there were promises of flair on attack, but execution will be something for both groups to look to improve as the season progresses. Looking ahead, the Vodafone Warriors play at home again next week against the Bulldogs, while the Bears take on the Panthers in Round 2.

At Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland

Vodafone Warriors 30 (Lewis Soosemea 3, Chanel Harris-Tavita, James Bell tries; Chanel Harris-Tavita 3 conversions, 2 penalties).

North Sydney Bears 22 (Mawene Hiroti, Braidon Burns, Amanaki Veamatahau, Vincent Leuluai tries; Dean Hawkins 3 conversions).

Vodafone Warriors | 1 Hayze Perham; 2 Lewis Soosemea, 3 Joseph Vuna, 4 Cole Waaka, 5 Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad; 6 Chanel Harris-Tavita, 7 Tevin Arona; 16 Agnatius Passi, 9 Karl Lawton, 10 Chris Satae; 11 Matiu Love-Henry, 12 James Bell (c); 13 Sione Afemui. Interchange: 8 Patrick Sipley, 14 Manaia Cherrington, 15 Trent Schaumkel, 17 Reece Charlie.

Surprised Gelling didn't get a run

Was kept on with the first grade side. Never know when someone might pull a hammy in warm up. Lino as well I think.

Ayshford, Beale, Gelling, Lino, Vete, Mannering all still to come back to either first grade or isp. Got some depth if injuries are kind.

The link has a Twitter video with highlights of Soosemea's hat trick. Can't embed it in this post.

SOOSEMEA, DAVIS GRAB FIRST HAT-TRICKS

It took just two games for a player to notch up a hat-trick in the Intrust Super Premiership, with a classy trebly coming for Lewis Soosemea in the Warriors’ win over the North Sydney Bears. The haul included an impressive cross-field effort for his second in the 64th minute, before he grabbed his third just three minutes later.

This season's now or never for Pat Sipley. He's about 26 and is as strong as an ox. Not sure what's holding him back. His father told me he's 'stronger than Tof'.

Good to get the campaign rolling

Looking forward to some Game Summary write ups. Also looks like there might be more opportunities on FoxSports to see more ISP games this year. I might be reliant on seeing games via internet only from next year as my time in Australia is nearing its end. Going to do my best to watch everything I can this year.

id be interested to see who exactly is in the 30 man NRL squad as it would give some indication of whether someone like Pat is any chance of making an appearance this year. Haven't been able to work it out as yet. Chris Satae seems to have jumped ahead of him in the pecking order.
