NRL chairman Peter Beattie urges Sydney to ‘get behind stadium rebuilds or lose big events’

EXCLUSIVE, Anna Caldwell and Rose Brennan, The Daily Telegraph
in an hour

NRL chairman Peter Beattie has issued a warning to Sydney saying it might as well give up to Melbourne and relinquish its “premier state” title if it doesn’t want to invest in bringing the city’s iconic stadiums up to scratch.

In the NRL’s fiercest comments yet on the stadium investment debate, new chairman Mr Beattie said NSW had to ask itself if it wanted Sydney to be a leader in sport, or if it was happy to fall behind Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

In an impassioned call for “straight talk” to convince the “faint-hearted”, Mr Beattie said the investment proposed for stadiums was “chicken feed” when held up against the rest of the budget and would inspire a whole generation of children to value sport and become more active.

“The reality is Sydney is Australia’s largest city — it should be a world leader attracting events internationally and to do that it needs the best facilities,” he said.

“And if not, well, give up to Melbourne if you want to. That’s fine but don’t pretend you want to be a leader. You won’t be the premier state as you once called yourself.”

Calling on “every rugby league supporter in the state” to get behind the stadiums investment, Mr Beattie said it was not only good for the game but good for the community.

As a former Queensland premier, Mr Beattie drove the construction of two new stadiums during his tenure, an achievement which he said drove massive economic activity there.

Mr Beattie said he’d looked at the budget himself and the spend on stadiums was “chicken feed” compared to health and education budgets.

“Remember this — investing in sport and stadiums encourage a whole new generation of kids to play sport,” he said.

He also said Perth’s new stadium had captured the attention of the country and the NRL, after hosting a crowd of 38,824 on Saturday.

He added that other states were “hoping” Sydney’s stadia investment fell over so they could take over major matches.

“No one should be under any illusions about that.”

Decision on Sydney's stadiums still weeks away

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres have doubled down on their commitment to knock down and rebuild two Sydney stadiums but a final decision on the controversial $2.5 billion policy could still be weeks away.

The decision to rebuild Allianz Stadium at Moore Park had been expected to go to the government’s expenditure review committee on Wednesday evening, paving the way for a final approval.

But it is not on the committee's agenda and the business case for ANZ Stadium at Homebush is not expected to be finalised for another month, so the government is now likely to consider both projects together.

Ms Berejiklian’s office would not comment on cabinet matters but in a statement the Premier said: “NSW deserves the best cultural facilities, including world class stadiums."

Mr Ayres, the government’s strongest supporter of the policy, said its position had not shifted and it would push ahead with two new stadiums.

“The NSW government remains committed to creating two world-class rectangular stadiums to ensure NSW returns to the number one position for sport and entertainment,” Mr Ayres said.

“We welcome the support today from the western Sydney business community to bring major events to this city to ensure that we’re continuing to grow the visitor economy and drive job growth."

Three western Sydney business groups have urged the government to establish a NSW Global Events Taskforce to ensure Sydney has a chance when it comes to bidding for least five major global sporting events, including Commonwealth Games and football World Cups.

Despite the commitment from the Premier and minister, Deputy Premier John Barilaro has insisted the policy was not a done deal and a “final decision” still had to be made.

Last week Mr Barilaro said if there was “red hot anger” in the community, the government would have to take that on board.

Several senior government sources have said there was widespread opposition to the policy within the Coalition.

One source said: “The Premier cannot be seen to back down from this or she will appear weak and indecisive so that’s why she is holding her ground for now.

“Just because we have a lot of money splashing around does not mean we should be pushing ahead with this. We have to back down or we just hand a free pass to the opposition.”

I like that he’s throwing it out there as a not so subtle reminder to the NSW gov that if they shit on the NRL, the GF deal is over.

Seriously, what would have Grant done about it? A lot f**king less I would say?

Wonder if Beattier will get on board if Sutherland want some more public coin to upgrade their joint??

They don't use it at the same time

???

Yeah, I know. How could they?

My point was, with more teams comes greater possibility of fixtures exceeding 25k. Just more opportunities to do so.

Waratahs in the past have regularly gotten crowds of over 25k, that could return.

Surely the chooks could push for crowds around 20K for games in a nice new stadium?

NSW stadiums strategy in disarray as parliamentary inquiry gathers support
ANDREW CLENNELL MARCH 14, 2018
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Picture: AAP.
The Berejiklian government is in disarray over its stadiums strategy with plans to announce the knockdown and rebuild of Allianz Stadium tomorrow understood to have been put on hold, and a parliamentary inquiry into the whole stadiums affair expected to win upper house approval.

One senior source in the government said this morning that the stadiums issue was not on the agenda at tonight’s Expenditure Review Committee meeting and if Sports Minister Stuart Ayres tried to “walk it in” to Expenditure Review Committee tonight ahead of tomorrow’s cabinet, “we’re not going to cop that shit”.

Ms Berejiklian and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres originally planned to bring to Expenditure Review Committee tonight and Cabinet tomorrow a plan to knock down and rebuild Allianz Stadium for between $700- $800 million.

Senior sources said the matter would now not be brought forward to cabinet tomorrow.

A decision on the future of the knockdown and rebuild of ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park — put at $1.25 billion — was expected to be decided on in a month’s time, amid widespread speculation that the government would look to downsize or delay that project to cope with community heat over a $2.5 billion stadiums spend.

Mr Ayres had pushed a resolution on Allianz Stadium at Moore Park first.

But yesterday, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Deputy Premier John Barilaro were telephoned by NRL chairman Peter Beattie to lobby the case for a full ANZ knockdown and rebuild. They both told Mr Beattie to go out and make the case for ANZ ahead of any decision.

One source said Mr Beattie was told by Ms Berejiklian that she backed the ANZ project. Mr Barilaro has made it clear the Nationals are open to backflipping on ANZ.

Sources have told The Australian the delay is because the premier is still yet to make her mind up on her final stadiums position, having announced she would build both stadiums last November and told 2GB last Friday that rebuilding Allianz was a “no-brainer”.

This afternoon, the Shooters Party is expected to announce it will move in the upper house to open a public works committee and public accountability committee to look into the stadiums affair. The Shooters expect to win the support of Christian Democrat Fred Nile and the Opposition, allowing the inquiry to occur.

One source said it would be “handy” if Mr Beattie, a former Labor premier, took the fight up to Opposition Leader Luke Foley on the stadiums issue.

$1.25bill seems very conservative. Optus stadium ended up costing $1.8bill for 60k seats, though some of that was for a new train station.

I reckon Beattie and Greenburg were sat in Optus stadium on Saturday thinking what a great place for a GF!

f**k Allianz. Just make ANZ Stadium the best rectangular stadium IN THE WORLD.

Just make it a good rectangular stadium, to think the NSW government is going to try and best private money all over the world just isn’t logical.

This says all the transport links for Perth stadium cost $400m

Plus all the outside landscaping etc, which already exists at ANZ

True but that's still $1.4bill for 60k seats. How many seats is the new ANZ planned for? then add in CPI. Id be surprised if they build it for less than $1.5bill in reality. When Optus stadium was announced it was due to cost $700mill for stadium and $300mill for infrastructure. The construction doubled in price.

No to mention some of those EPL and NFL stadiums are stunning and cost ridiculous money. Best in the world may be ambitious but 100% better than current ANZ is achievable!
They spent $1.5billion on Wembley stadium 6 years ago.

Where are you getting the $1.8b figure from? Everything I can see says the final cost was between $1.5-1.6B

Obviously costs blow out, but ANZ at $1.25b seems a lot more realistic than the initial proposal for Perth costing $700m.

Dare say rectangular grounds may be cheaper & easier to construct than ovals too.
