Liddle would be named in reserves if he wasn’t playing firsts, this pretty much confirms he’s in the 17 on Monday

Interesting. I thought that Tui and Liddle would come back through reserves but who knows.

I reckon Ivan is playing the old mindf**k. We've had a positive start to the year than many expected so I am not sure he'd risk him.

He won’t risk them, he won’t play them unless they are 100%. Maybe they were right to go last week but they gave them an extra week off.

Should be some fur flying as well... but no fur in State cup :( . Just the sentimental Magpie which just like the single tiger spells division and regression.
I guess the pissed 70's board at Ashfield need to somehow justify their 3am meetings and show their new power

Should there be a Balmain emblem on the sleeve ?? ;)

You can tell we've got a heap of guys too good for this grade. I know the fans have seemingly got wet over Gamble but Drinkwaters the main dude in the team.

Wests Win Battle Of The Magpies

An assertive first half has seen Western Suburbs win the 'Battle of the Magpies' 44-4 against Wentworthville at ANZ Stadium. Josh Drinkwater continued his dominant start to the Intrust Super Premiership NSW season, while Mahe Fonua had another powerful game on the wing with two tries.

A low, crafty kick by Drinkwater had the ball sit up just short of the dead ball line. As the Wentworthville players tried to shadow the ball as it edged towards the line, Lucas Price managed to get around them and athletically win the race to the ball.

A double-pump from Drinkwater off the kick-off set put Chris McQueen through a hole for a long-range dash before being brought down. The ball was spread to the right on the next play and found its way into the hands of Tyson Gamble, who showed brilliant vision to put in a grubber in open space for David Nofoaluma to get their first and extend their lead to 10-0.

Wentworthville looked to post their first points when Nathan Milone strolled through with ease, but it was called back for an obstruction that opened the hole. To make matters worse, Wests scored off the very next set when Leighton Tali showed brutal strength to break the line before passing to Mahe Fonua who crashed over.

Nofoaluma returned the favour to Gamble shortly after when the five-eighth put a kick in that could not be handled by Milone, and the skillful winger cleaned up the scraps and threw a beautiful around-the-corner pass for a supporting Gamble to score.

To solidify their dominance going into the half-time break, Drinkwater put up a cross-field kick for Fonua to snatch out of the air and ground to extend their lead to 28-0.

Wentworthville had a better start to the second half and almost scored when Cameron King was held up, and finally troubled the scorekeeper when Nathan Davis took advantage of an overlap after a right-to-left shift.

The points didn't come as often for Western Suburbs in the second half, and it took 24 minutes before Watson Heleta danced through the Wentworthville line and scored a brilliant solo try.

A ridiculous flick pass from Fonua led to the next try, as he planted the ball on the check of Braden Robson who then stepped through a hole and ran away to score, before a freakish effort by Nofoaluma on the stroke of full-time pushed it out to 44-4.

Fantastic to see our reggies and more specifically Drinkwater performing so well. Is Drinkwater contracted in our top 30?
He's always struggled to make the step up to Firsts in the past but now; who knows? Cleary and Hodgo seem to have improved everyone.
He could be a handy replacement for Brooks should he go down injured.

Drinkwater isn't in the top 30. Yes he has been playing good. Our wingers though are unstoppable at that level.

Both wingers r far superior to MWZ in attack but obviously they don’t meet IC’s kpi’s in other aspects of the game like defence & catching high ball.Im not much of a fan of MWZ but he’s obviously doing what IC is asking of him & as Thompson has been incredible it seems only injury will give Nofa or Fonua a chance of being promoted.

I think Heleta really deserves a first grade chance. If Lolohea doesnt look the goods by mid season then he is worth a shot.

Tali blew 2 tries by not passing to Mahe earlier, can’t see him ever going further then ISC

Agree re Heleta, shame if he goes his whole career never playing first grade. Wish he was a year or two older when we had guys like Milone, Hoeter, Leuliua etc playing first grace

There would not be another team in the NRL that has a reserve grade capable of competing with the top grade. This is the benefit of spreading your cap pretty evenly over your whole squad rather than direct a large chunk at so called super stars.
We may have been forced to go down this road with the so called super stars reluctant to resign or come to the JV, but its working a treat so far
