INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP

Vodafone Warriors end another Dragons winning run

A 16-point haul from five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita has guided the Warriors to a comfortable 37-24 win over the St George Illawarra Dragons at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

The home side was coming off a big win last weekend against Blacktown, which had put them right in the middle of a very congested Intrust Super Premiership ladder. However they would have to contend the encounter without their influential skipper Mason Lino, with the in-form halfback given a richly-deserved call up to the NRL fixture between the two clubs on Friday night. Coach John Teina brought in Sam Cook to the halves to plug the gap that Lino left, and Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck got a start on the wing in place of the suspended Lewis Soosemea.

St George Illawarra were riding high after four wins in a row, however were playing a side that had recorded two victories against them last season. Like the Warriors, they had issues in the halves department, with their captain and halfback Darren Nicholls out due to injury. Tristan Sailor moved into five-eighth to partner with Jack Payne, and the team took to Mt Smart on a slightly damp but otherwise fine Auckland afternoon.

The Warriors go off to a dream start, as the Dragons' kick-off sailed dead on the full. A further ruck penalty piled pressure on the defence, leading to Tuivasa-Sheck opening the scoring in the fourth minute by diving over in the left-hand corner. Harris-Tavita nailed the sideline conversion, the first in what would be a perfect day with the boot.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when they conceded back-to-back sets off the kick-off. A determined set from the restart led to space opening up on the right-hand side of the park, and centre Joseph Vuna sliced through the right edge to score five metres in from touch. Harris-Tavita again added the tough kick, and the Dragons found themselves down 12-0 before they'd even had a turn with the football.

Second-rower Matiu Love-Henry got in on the act in the 13th minute, after the Warriors put together another excellent attacking set. His try was again converted and the onus was on the Dragons to front up or be on the end of a likely flogging.

They did so with a clever kick to the wing, which was caught and flicked on to a flying Patrick Herbert to dive over in the right-hand corner. Zac Lomax added the extras, and it led to period of dominance for the Dragons. The Warriors conceded a series of penalties and goal-line dropouts, however the visitors couldn't cash in on the opportunities presented.

The Warriors had the final say of the half with a piece of individual brilliance by winger Zac Santo. His grubber through and try with two minutes to play was converted by Harris-Tavita, meaning his side headed to the sheds with a commanding 24-6 lead.

Whatever the Dragons had to drink at half-time did the trick initially, as they scored two quick tries to reduce the gap. First hooker Reece Robson burrowed over from close range, then winger Jordan Pereira latched onto a cut out pass just moments later to score. Lomax converted both, taking scores to 24-18.

However, the good work was undone when Patrick Sipley cruised through some weak tackling to score under the posts after 50 minutes. This led to the Warriors getting their game plan back on track and Harris-Tavita scoring off a Cook grubber eight minutes later.

From there the Warriors comfortably held on to the ball and their three score lead. With six minutes to play, Cook slotted a short-range field goal to tack on some insurance. Robson pegged one back for the Dragons before time ran out, but the sheer weight of possession that the Warriors enjoyed in the last 20 minutes ensured a well-deserved victory.

The Warriors host their third home game in a row next weekend, welcoming the Newtown Jets to Mt Smart Stadium. The Dragons return to WIN Stadium, against a tough Panthers outfit.

Warriors 37 (J Tuivasa-Sheck, J Vuna, Matiu Love-Henry, Z Santo, Patrick Sipley, C Harris-Tavita tries; C Harris-Tavita 6 goals; S Cook field goal) def St George Illawarra Dragons 24 (R Robson 2, P Herbert, J Pereira tries; Z Lomax 4 goals)

Good to see Santo playing again. He should be knocking on the 1st grade door, especially when injuries occur.

Vodafone Warriors teams named for ISP and Jersey Flegg

Front rower James Gavet is a notable inclusion in the Vodafone Warriors' squad for Saturday's eighth-round Intrust Super Premiership encounter with the Newtown Jets at QBE North Harbour Stadium (1.00pm kick-off).

Gavet last played in the Vodafone Warriors' third-round NRL clash against Canberra on March 24 before a hamstring injury ruled him out of the following week's encounter with the Sydney Roosters.

He is set to make his comeback this weekend after being named on the interchange bench for the ISP side.

The Vodafone Warriors and the Jets have identical records of four wins and three losses to sit on eight points with Newtown lying third on points for and against while the Vodafone Warriors are seventh. Western Suburbs and the Mounties share top spot on 10 points ahead of no fewer than six teams on eight points.

The Vodafone Warriors are hunting a third win on end after beating the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 34-4 and the St George Illawarra Dragons 37-24 while the Jets have also won their last two against Newcastle 58-4 and Canterbury-Bankstown 22-20.

In the early game at QBE Stadium, the Vodafone Junior Warriors take on Cronulla (11.00am kick-off).

They home side has won two of its last three matches, coming off a 38-30 victory over St George Illawarra which has it sitting in 10th spot just two points outside the top eight. The Sharks lead the competition with five wins, a draw and a loss in the first seven rounds.

No live games for me for a month while I’m in the USA, but seems like a good hard fought win over the jets. Gavet back as well. He’ll be a welcome addition the the top side.

Vodafone Warriors climb ladder with tough win in wet

The Warriors proved the importance of having a good goal-kicker at QBE Stadium today, pipping the Newtown Jets 20-18 despite being outscored four tries to three.

The home side were looking to climb up the Intrust Super Premiership with another win, however they'd have to do it on unfamiliar territory at the new venue, also known as North Harbour Stadium. The Warriors welcomed back winger Lewis Soosemea from a one-week suspension, while another notable inclusion was prop James Gavet, making his first appearance in six weeks after a hamstring injury.

Newtown were four places higher than the Warriors on the table - but it was only by virtue of points difference. However, their confidence would have been high off the back of a stunning come-from-behind win against the Bulldogs last weekend. The Jets also had a good addition on the wing, as Tongan international Sosaia Feki pulled on the royal blue jumper for the first time this season.

Unfortunately, Auckland turned on an abysmal day for the game. Conditions were more suited to water polo than Rugby League as a heavy downpour swept the city, and it was evident that it was going to be a war of attrition before the ball had even been kicked off.

It didn't take long for the Jets to win the first battle, forcing a Warriors handling error on the first set. A subsequent penalty gave the visitors good field position, leading to Aaron Gray crossing on the right edge. Another string of penalties meant the Warriors were backed up against their line nine minutes later, and again Gray scored. This time he latched onto a kick through that held up in the wet in-goal, and the Jets took a two-score lead.

Even though neither try was converted, the Warriors needed to hit back. It took them until the 18th minute to finally gain some red zone ascendency, and big prop Tevita Satae crashed over from short range next to the posts.

It stirred the home side into action, and Zac Santo benefitted from the conditions in the 24th minute. Hayze Perham had put in a kick that held up suddenly in a puddle, meaning that the Jets defenders over-ran the ball and the Warriors winger was gifted the easiest try of his career. Chanel Harris-Tavita nailed the difficult conversion, despite having to kick it out of a pool that had formed along the touchline.

The Warriors dominated the remainder of the half, and added a very slick try in the 36th minute. Joe Vuna, who had made his NRL debut midweek, was on the end of some perfectly-timed passes to score 10 metres to the right of the posts. This made the score 18-8 as the teams sprinted off the field to find some shelter from the rain at half-time.

The Jets had the strong northerly wind at their backs in the second half, and dominated possession and territory. They made it count with a try to Sione Katoa in the 57th minute. The ball again sat up short in the wet off a seemingly innocuous kick, giving the winger an untouched run into the corner from 15 metres out.

Eight minutes later Anthony Moraitis bashed his way over next to the posts. Kyle Flanagan finally found his kicking boots, landing the conversion to make the scores level at 18-all.

It set up a tense last 10 minutes, however the home side was able to not only conquer their opposition, but the terrible conditions as well.

Four minutes from time, the Jets made a crucial error out in front of their own posts. A dangerous tackle on Vuna gave Harris-Tavita a chance to break the deadlock, and the five-eighth held his nerve into the stiff breeze. The ball sailed through the sticks to give the Warriors a thrilling win.

They now face a tough assignment in Canberra next weekend against Mounties, while Newtown head back to Henson Park to face North Sydney in the first leg of the 2018 Frank Hyde Shield.

Warriors 20 (T Satae, Z Santo, J Vuna tries; C Harris-Tavita 4 goals) def Newtown Jets 18 (A Gray 2, S Katoa, A Moraitis tries; K Flanagan goal)

Vodafone Warriors hunt fourth straight ISP win
The Vodafone Warriors' form revival faces a stern test in Saturday's ninth-round Intrust Super Premiership clash against competition leaders the Mounties at GIO Stadium in Canberra (12.45pm kick-off local time; 2.45pm NZT).

Coach John Teina's side has put together a run of three straight wins in the last three weeks to sit on 10 points with four other teams just two behind the Mounties.

Ranking fifth on points for and against, the Vodafone Warriors have rebounded from a low point against Western Suburbs – when they lost 0-32 – to beat the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 34-4, St George Illawarra 37-24 and Newtown 20-18 in torrential rain last weekend.

Named to return to the side is centre Anthony Gelling, who has been with the club's NRL squad for the last few weeks. Also back in the line-up is second rower Joe Vuna after making his NRL debut against Melbourne on Anzac Day.

With Karl Lawton named in the NRL line-up, Manaia Cherrington is listed to start at hooker and utility Zac Santo, a try scorer on the wing last Saturday, has been named in the halves.

The Mounties have won their last two, pumping Wyong 44-4 last weekend.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors have a break for the next two weeks in the Jersey Flegg Cup.

Is it appropriate in official media write ups to deacribe a match thrashing as a ‘pumping’?

Basically the same as ‘rooted’ or ‘buggered’ them. Despicable journalism. Amusing tho

Went down 11-0 on saturday

No momentum this year.

A couple of games coming up in Sydney, Saturday-week at Blacktown (I'll check my work roster) and the following Saturday at Olympic. The latter is no-go for me as it's part of a first grade fixture not involving Warriors (I balk at shelling out hard-earned first grade tickets for non-Warriors).

So Blacktown or bust!

ISP and Jersey Flegg teams named for 11th round
The Vodafone Warriors will have plenty of NRL experience to call on in their bid to return to winning form in their 11th-round Intrust Super Premiership clash against St George Illawarra at Henson Park in Sydney on Saturday (1.00pm kick-off local time; 3.00pm NZT).

The John Teina-coached side has followed a run of three wins with losses to the Mounties (26-30) and Western Suburbs (0-11) in the last two rounds.

It leaves the Vodafone Warriors with a 5-5 record just holding onto eighth spot on 10 points, although still only four points adrift of the top two sides the Mounties and Penrith. The Dragons are one of four sides on 12 points, ranked fifth on points for and against.

The squad named today includes 10 players with NRL experience with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad on the wing, Blake Ayshford and Anthony Gelling in the centres, Sam Cook at halfback, Ligi Sao, Karl Lawton and Albert Vete in the front row, Joe Vuna and James Bell in the back row and Manaia Cherrington on the bench.

When the two sides met at Mount Smart Stadium on April 21, the Vodafone Warriors prevailed 37-24.

Meanwhile, the Vodafone Junior Warriors resume their Jersey Flegg Cup campaign against St George Illawarra this weekend after the competition’s two-week break.

The last time the two teams met in Auckland, the Vodafone Junior Warriors won 38-30.

The Dragons sit ninth on the ladder on five points just one ahead of the Vodafone Junior Warriors.

Haven't been neglecting this thread on purpose. I've been back in the US since the day after the Storm Game catastrophie, and a lot of that was in Cuba where you still need to buy a card for wifi access, and stand in a park to connect to a nearby hotel that happens to be expensive enough to have a wifi network. Not much spare time for forum posting.
