Joey or Thurston, who is GOAT?

Johns was a better player than Thurston. Johns dominated at all levels, especially at club level where if he was fully fit throughout the season it seemed like he was twice as good as anyone else.

With Johns Newcastle were a premiership contender, without him they were a wooden spoon contender. Thurston was the dominant force at the Cowboys, but as we have seen without him in the side they were still a premiership contender, and with him in the side they could still battle for the spoon. It was more the coming of Morgan, Granville, Taumalolo etc that put the Cowboys on track for the 2015 GF, rather than Thurston on his own.

At state level we've seen Johns come in and make us wonder how QLD even got close to NSW. We lost Johns and didn't win for another 9 years. Thurston came into the QLD around the beginning of the streak, but that also coincided with the coming of other stars Smith, Slater etc and Joey's retirement.

Messenger for one very simple reason; this guy was so good that his decision to cross over from Union to League spawned Australian Rugby League. Johns, Thurston, Lewis, etc. Are all brilliant players but none of them changed history the way Messenger did.

Jarryd Hayne, obvs.

Thurston is the best player I've seen at their peak. Joey was certainly a better defender but for me unless he's Chris Sandow I'm not too worried about my halfbacks defence.

Niether is the GOAT imo but both are in the conversation

Yeah you’re right.

He only needed Darren Albert and Ben Kennedy........

You do remember the winning try was laid on by Johns and that he was a deserving 2001 Clive Churchill Medal winner. Kennedy wasn't as damaging after halftime imo. Johns was going hard the whole game.

He wasn’t deserving of the Clive Churchill. And he knows it, every time he is asked about it the embarrassment is pretty evident.

And JT shouldn’t have got it for 2015. Granville or Milford should have recieved, whole different argument though.

Tonie Carroll for protecting Lockyer all those years and his pre and half time speeches to those 8 year olds makes him the GOAT.

Kennedy won them the 2001 grand final. He was absolutely massive and should have won the CC medal

EDIT that's not to say Johns wasn't good in that game for the record

How dare you - he was every bit as deserving as Slater will be this year
