Surely USA, Scotland, Ireland and Cook Islands wont be available with WC qualifications.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's the nations who have already qualified plus the two All Star teams.

Maybe they'll put it out to expressions of interest. Doubt there will be much money involved so some countries might not be able to afford to send a team.

How can you have Aus, NZ and the all star teams?

How does qualifying work ?

Or are we using the SL War World 9s Cabramatta 9s and Commonwealth Games 9s as a ranking

True that. Be a little racist.

Not just that but it would be Australia and NZ without those players. So if say England or Tonga won people would say it was a micky mouse comp anyway as Australia didn’t have a full side. It’s a total non starter in my eyes.

After much thinking, I think I've worked out the format.

For the womens, a full round robin and the final = 7 matches.

4 groups of 3 = 12 matches.

The first placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Cup. Semis + final = 3 matches.

The second placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Plate. Semis + final = 3 matches.

The third placed team from each pool goes into a 4 team knock out for the Bowl. Semis + final = 3 matches.

Total = 28 matches.

God I hope it's like that. Reflects the old World 7s format and all teams play a minimum of three games.

I suspect it will follow the 12 team RLWC format

3 team qualify for quarter final from first 2 pools

But only 2 from last pool

The 4 left could play a Plate series

Tito, I notice in your post you have Dolphin Oval instead of Suncorp because of possible overkill in the tournament's infancy. As a compromise, what do you think of Gold Coast Stadium instead? A weekend of International 9s in mid october on QLD's holiday strips sounds sensational. Maybe a free music night on the Saturday at Broadbeach like their free Blues festival. What a weekend..!! :open_mouth:

Yes, that might work too - I think you're right about the promo though. If it is on the GC there will need to be a festival atmosphere around it to get the attention it would need. Sounds good though, I would go to it.

Pool A
Aus
Tonga
PNG
France
Lebanon
Jamaica

Pool B
Eng
NZ
Fiji
Samoa
Wales
Canada

Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Cook Islands & USA will be in WC qualifiers (yes, they could send other players but until the 9's reaches a maturity where the players are specialised, most nations will want to send their best players.

Each pool is played as a round-robin, quarter final, semi-final, 3rd placed play-off and final (15 matches total).

In other news, who are we expecting to be the favourites in this? NRL players have more professional 9's experience through the Auckland 9's but that is not much of a form guide and includes players from most of the top countries. I wonder if we will see our own version of the Fiji RU team develop? A nation that is not the best at 13's but can dominate at 9's level. Fiji themselves? PNG? Tonga? Lebanon? It is pretty wide open. I can see Aus, NZ, Tonga, PNG, England, Fiji and Samoa being in the mix.

I think the problem there is the best players would be playing 9s and not qualifiers. Scotland I can imagine having the same squad in the qualifiers next year as they did this year. If they sent a team to the 9s you would for sure see Coote, Linnett etc even though they don't play qualifiers.

Yes, I agree, that is exactly what will happen - so I've only included nations in the 9's world cup that are either already qualified for the 13's WC or nations that are out of contention for qualification.

Too many matches in your format.

For both pools, in the pool stage alone, there would be 30 matches.

They've already announced how many matches there will be.

The tournament will be held on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2019, and will feature men's and women's tournaments.

Twelve teams in the men's competition and four teams in the women's tournament will compete across 28 matches and 12 hours of action.

That's 28 matches inclusive of both the men's and women's competition.

Now that looks like an attractive weekend away in Sydney! If ticket prices are reasonable I'm (and I'm sure others) planning to attend this tournament.

Great to see. But they need to stick to a project, Rugby League keeps chopping and changing and chopping again. Hopefully this leads to a regular event and plenty of smaller, qualifying, regional events and competitions,
