I will add that when Edwards got injured and was ruled out for the rest of the season, I said that I thought DWZ was a better fullback than Edwards.

I dont disagree FF, but I do think that at the moment they are both better than the one we have.

I can only imagine that each day you reset like an inconsequential character in Groundhog Day and go about your usual business. This point of viewpoint has already been queried a number of times by different people and directly by me recently.

How about adding something new. See if you can find a 19 year old from the last 10-15 years who started off in the centres and finished the season strong. I can’t think of one.

I don’t really get how someone becomes so frustrated with a player that they dismiss them completely, and send themselves into some sort of vicious feedback loop, just because the next best thing is around the corner. Next you’ll be advocating for Max Feagai or Aaron Schoupp. Why isn’t Jason Saab in the lineup already?

Surely you see the potential in starting off one way and letting a player ease into a position over a season. If Lomax breaks down at any point, I can see the whole counter argument gaining favour. I don’t think the coach would be overly cautious, when the coach was criticised for pushing players to hard over recent years.

Some will try nonetheless.
14? Totally disagree with you there. He has one season left with us so we need to make the most of it. No need to punish him to the detriment of the team. 2019 could be our year.
Miss-guided loyalty and favouritism by Mary is a big part of the problem.
That's his strength and why the players love him

I have given it a bit of thought and I think our best 13 would have Widdop at centre. Widdop is a left field specialist, with a good running game. If he was playing centre, he would just be one position out, with a bit more room to move. He would be very good at setting his winger up. I think he would be better than Lafai. I am undecided about the wingers I would pick. I am very keen to see Ravalawa play. I also want to see Pearson play too, so my wingers would be out of Ravalawa, Pearson and Pereira. I have not decided who my last bench spot would be. It would be out of Host, Aitken or Robson. My team with everyone available would be

1 Dufty
2 Ravalawa
3 Lomax
4 Widdop
5 Pearson/Pereira
6 Hunt
7 Norman
13 DeBelin
12 Frizell
11 T Sims
10 Vaughan
9 McInnes
8 Graham

14 Lucky
15 Lawrie
16 K Sims
17 Aitken/Host/Robson

I know that if Mary selects Hunt and Norman in the halves, Hunt will be wearing the 7 and Norman the 6, but if I was coach, I would put Norman in the 7 jersey and tell him to play halfback. I see a lot of points in that team. Widdop and Lomax would be a massive upgrade on Lafai and Aitken. Ravalawa and Pearson would add speed and size to our flanks. I think Norman is one of the best game managing halfbacks in the comp. He will go to the line and engage the defenders and put runners through holes beautifully. Hunt can still play his natural game. He would be given a licence to run and play whats he sees. He provides X factor in our halves. I think our pack is one of the best in the comp and the bench I picked looks very strong. They have either all started numerous first grade games or will most likely start a lot in the future. I think that is a top 4 side and could even be top 2.

ps, I expect Mary to select Widdop at fullback and leave Dufty out.

After some thought I would love to see this team run out. Plenty of points and stiffer in defence

Widdop would be wasted at centre. It makes more sense to have Norman there with his size but they should really be occupying two 'spine' positions.

A bit like this, I think

th

Widdop is, and never will be, or even was a centre. It's f/b or 5/8, that's about the sum of it.

3. Aitken
4. Lafai
5. Silverman
6. Widdop
7. Hunt
You put too much wine in the Christmas punch
You spent a myriad of posts referring to SLOMAX and then pick him on the wing and then come up with a newbie who hasn't played 1 senior game and your love affair with Aitken knows no boundaries.
You should have taken a leaf out of beaver Menzies book and worn head gear when you were playing.

Looking at this 2015 Anzac Day side, can't believe people still genuinely believe that our recruitment has been poor over the last few years.

We've gone from a laughing stock in the forwards to being one of the most feared in the competition, stability in the halves, some quality backs coming through. There are holes we still need to plug, but we're doing well.

It's all about agendas and what people believe should be the approach by the club.

Some people bag it because they don't have patience and want people signed up immediately - irrespective of who they are or their circumstances. If someone rates them, then recruitment are crap for not signing them.

Some like OT believe that youth is the way to go so don't like recruitment for signing older players.

Some just don't like Millward or the club in general and find it hard to admit when we sign a good player.

Personally, as you have pointed out, I believe we've improved markedly over the past few years and have built up a pretty decent team considering the constraints we have to work with. As I've said in other posts, I don't think it's as easy as people make out as I am sure there are a heap of different complex components to fit together when going through a recruitment program.

Saints have gone from outside the eight (2015) to the periphery (2018 - 7th place).

Not to mention the paradigm of late season fades which are the hallmark of Paul McGregor’s coaching.

You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig.

Patience has led Saints to only one premiership in 40-years.

The Club needs to do so much better in many areas.
