Hold the women’s competition in summer

2018 was a momentous year for women’s rugby league. We saw the first women’s NRL competition and women’s state of origin.

Despite its huge successes, the women’s NRL competition found itself drowned out by the far more established and superior men’s competition.

The solution to providing the girls with an entire market to capture is to hold their league competition over summer. There is a huge market of league hungry fans who are looking for something to watch other than cricket or greyhound racing. The summer girls comp would allow the NRL to have a year round product, and may also curb the media’s propensity to headline grab over the NRLs off season.

Thoughts and opinions?

This Year?

I don't get why men can't play netball in speedo's in winter. It would have it's own niche market and channel 9 could cover it with exclusive rights and have Liz Ellis and Mary G commentating.

During the game, they can give updates to NRL scores between promos for the Block, Doctor Doctor and Love Island.

It would help with it not messing with the State competitions, but the NRL really want the GF on the same day as the mens

The reality is the June Regional representative fixtures are actually what the NRLW comp looks like today

A few round robin rounds and semifinals and a final

With 6 teams representing Australian regions

I guess it would depend from when to when you would look to run it.

For the AFL, playing early Feb - mid-Mar works as people are often starting to suffer Cricket season fatigue and are ready to watch football.

Something similar could work for the NRL, versus starting the season after the NRL GF where most people started to switch off.

The issue is it would be completely out of whack with the rest of the Women's RL season, flip side is that fixtures could be made a lot fairer so all teams get to play games at home (unlike this year where the Warriors had no home matches) and potentially have independent matches versus being treated a bit like curtain raisers.

Anyway it is worth consideration, but I don't think you can use it as a content filler for the whole offseason or even something you could run in December and early January.

Was waiting for the suggestion to be played in bikinis as well

The female comp should be treated like a genuine comp. the more it gets presented as an exhibition the more it will be thought of that way

Yes because playing it as curtain raisers to men's finals games where price of admission to the women's game is essentially free just screams premium event.

Nor sure why OP has been labelled as sexist. Splitting the comps has merit and has worked to great effect in the WNBA. Perhaps it is too early to do that in this case but surely the ultimate goal is for women's matches to be the main event of the day and sell out a venue one day for a GF in its own right.

Because there always has to be one white knight to play the sexist card for the women.

The idea absolutely has merit, possibly not over summer, but during the NRL pre-season isn't such a bad idea.

for someone who's dedicated to not watching it, you're sure in this thread a bit to ensure everyone knows about your opinion

White knight on cue. Classically attacking the poster rather than the point being made.

Having watched a game at the start of the season, I wondered why this competition wasn't standalone, and why did it have to piggyback the finals series, after a full season of being saturated with football.

But I'm sure I'm just being sexist
