In November I met a group of New Zealander guys watching the England V Kiwis match at the Casino in Melbourne. We soon got chatting about rugby league. I asked one of the guys "How come they don't have rugby league in the schools in most of New Zealand?" He answered : "There is
no room for it" I replied that "They could play both codes just like what happens in Australia?" He was stumped for an answer and shrugged his shoulders. These guys loved both codes but it looks like one code is getting preferential treatment compared to the other. And this has been happening for many years. No wonder it's a massive effort when the Kiwis win an international rugby league tournament!
My take on it is that rugby league should receive the same amount of access and presence as rugby union. Most people are not aware of this distinct difference between Australia and NZ. Mind you elite private schools in Australia still shun rugby league and allow other codes a chance to participate.

You might like to start by asking why the NZRL doesn't get a decent cut of the Sky NRL media money to be able to pay development officers to go into these schools and set up programs? Development costs money, NZRL has little. Australia is happy to use NZ as a breeding ground for NRL players but seems reluctant to invest in the infrastructure there.

If these schools are being offered programs and support but are refusing it your bias theory may be valid, but I suspect they are not as the NZRL simply doesn't have the grass roots money available to offer schools support.

You touch on the issue. In NZ it's the vast majority of schools that are doing the development work for a code such as union and not league. That's the difference!

That’s because union is their national sport. They have no more commitment to a minor sport like RL than they do soccer or basketball or afl. If we want them to take up RL we need to support and encourage them to do so.

Once again you prattle on without getting any of the facts first. For the vast majority of schools in NZ it has nothing to do with "preferential treatment" and everything to do with resourcing and interest.

For years, NZ Rugby, through their provincial Unions, paid for posts, pads, refs, jerseys for school teams. on the condition that these were only to be used for Rugby teams. the NZRL paid nothing, concentrating predominately on the club game for age grade comps. It was also an NZ law for secondary school's that stated you had to play for your school teams before you were allowed to play for any external club. This is why you had so many kids, like I did, playing Rugby on Saturday and League on Sunday. That law was pulled in the 80s.

Now its all about what resources go were. most schools can barely afford to run one winter team. So even if there are a dozen kids who want to play League, if there are more who want to play Rugby, then Rugby will be played. Currently there are many more kids wanting to play Rugby than League. They are still able to play club League and no longer must play for their school first.

And yes there are still some "Rugby Schools" who will only ever play Rugby because of their history, but then there are also a few Schools who will only play League.

So Graham Lowe getting the cane for playing rugby league on weekends isn't an example of bias?

Please name the schools in NZ that only play League! ?
Once again, completely irrelevant to what you first stated and what i responded to.

And that was fifty plus years ago

This happened Te Kaha. I would suggest where there is smoke there is fire?! Your response is to isolate this incident! ? A true supporter of rugby league would be concerned of any such treatment for playing the code. JUSTIFYING BIGGOTRY(toward rugby league ) AND TRIVIALISING SUCH AN EXAMPLE*(Graham Lowe) IS YOUR STANCE TE KAHA. Not other rugby league supporters stance I suggest.

You can suggest all you like, it does not make it true.

First rule of logic. What is is.
Second rule of logic: Correlation does not always equal causation.

As a teacher you should know this.

You need specific evidence before a claim can be substantiated. This is something you fail to do time and time again.

The rest of your post is hyperbolic waffle,

The evidence is the "fragile " state for rugby league in NZ. And you have already derided a Kiwi writer whom has mentioned this bigotry in the article "The Plight of South African Rugby league ". I believe you are very defensive and not showing the respect or concerns that is appropriate or expected for a rugby league fan. You have not shown an empathy or decent regard for rugby league's struggles. So you are a huge question mark on this website.

2nd rule of logic fail.

You cannot link one to the other with out direct evidence.

You are using a conclusion as evidence of your assertion.

Another fail.

Your claim:
"These guys loved both codes but it looks like one code is getting preferential treatment "
this in the context of national level.

Your evidence of such:
ZERO

Lol. I am seeing a biased against rugby league on your behalf. You can carry on about what you deem as 'evidence' as much as you like. What I am seeing from you is a distinct disregard for the status of where Rugby League should be in your eyes. Your lack of empathy and concern for bigotry examples against the code of rugby league is astounding! Not only you don't think: "Could other NZ students have suffered the cane for playing rugby league? But you choose to isolate this example as insignificant! You are providing facts that you are not on this site for the benefit of rugby league. That's a fact!

And like always what you "see" is your opinion only. It is in no way fact.

A fact being something that is actually true and real. Something you don't seem to have a grasp of.

Its not what I deem to be "evidence". It is what normal, everyday people consider as evidence. What scientists consider as evidence. What the courts consider as evidence. Its what actual teachers consider as evidence.

What you consider as evidence is not.

And as per usual the rest of your post is hyperbolic twaddle.

RUGBY LEAGUE has faced many barriers and battles in its quest to be a universally popular sport. Over many decades various types of examples showing the repression of rugby league have occured. This thread is aimed at exposing, discussing and hopefully gaining proactive remedies and discussion for the betterment of rugby league as a truelly free and growing code to be enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. Attached is an article showing an example of what rugby league has endured and is still enduring.

You will.find that most of these schools allow soccer, basketball etc yet no rugby league! And ofcourse union is sacrosanct!

Again you are wrong. you are pushing this lie with no evidence.

Soccer has by far the biggest following in primary schools but has a much smaller presence in secondary schools. Again it is only played if there is enough support. Basketball has a small presence and mainly its just in the cities. League is played were there is enough money and enough kids who want to play. There are only a few schools that refuse to play it and they are getting smaller.

You claim that League is not allowed in most schools in NZ is an outright lie.

Okay look.

Hows about instead of shitting on someone for having an opinion, you make a f**king effort to meet him halfway. Clearly he wants to have a topical discussion about a genuine issue facing the game.

All of you people shitting on Stallion are just as bad as he is. You give this bloke more shit than genuine trolls who provide zero to this place.

Stallion, if you make a statement, such as those about Rugby League in NZ schools, you will need to provide a source to back it up (website link, book etc).

This is a guideline that applies to everyone on this site.

Its greatest barrier is itself, not union bias!

Where is your evidence that the majority of NZ schools "do not allow" RL to be played?

Have you ever had a discussion with Stallion?

It's guaranteed to become abusive, repetitive and filled with misinformation that he will refuse to provide sources for or change when presented with actual facts.

How the f**k are we supposed to 'meet him halfway'? Provide half of the abuse and silly rubbish that he inevitably brings up?

Also 'rugby league is repressed in NZ schools' or whatever he is on about is not an opinion, it is misinformation. 'Rugby league does not have enough presence in NZ schools' - that's a fair opinion, and a good discussion point. Te Kaha gives good points but all Stallion does is rattle on about union conspiracy rubbish.

In my town, we have only ever had a rugby league team. No union, AFL or soccer. Someone from the outside might claim that rugby league actively suppresses these sports. Should I give that a moment's notice?

He abused no one in this thread until people rocked up and started shitting on him and this thread. Perhaps you should consider if your attitude towards him is what causes him and the threads to go in those directions.

How the f**k are we supposed to 'meet him halfway'? Provide half of the abuse and silly rubbish that he inevitably brings up?
Don't act like a complete arsehole towards him. If he says something you disagree with, converse like an adult instead of just calling him names like a petulant child.

And I told him very clearly to provide sources. I didn't call him names and bitch and moan like a pathetic moron. Grow up.

Yes. Add it to the conversation.

Like an adult.

It's a conversation/debate.

Not a sandbox at kindergarten.

Can't believe I had to make these bleedingly obvious responses.
