The PNGRFL have really come a long way since the infighting in 2010-2012 crippled the game up here.
Chairman Sandis Tsaka has done a great job since taking over in 2013.
And the money is now rolling in.

K10 Million Sponsorship for PNGRFL

The PNG Rugby Football League and PNG Health Assurance yesterday signed a K10 million contract as major sponsors of the PNG LNG Kumuls for the next five years.
Specialist adviser to PHA Raj Juta told a media conference in Port Moresby yesterday.
“PHA is delighted to announce this landmark five-year sponsorship with the PNGRFL as platinum sponsors of the PNG LNG Kumuls this year,” he said.
“PHA will become naming rights sponsors of the PNG Kumuls starting next year 2020 when they will be known as PHA Kumuls until 2023.”
Juta also said that PHA’s partnership with PNGRFL for personal accident protection cover to all registered players and officials including referees and employees.
“Providing protection to rugby league players through a personal insurance cover is a very important step in promoting the sport not only in PNG but also to rugby league enthusiasts around the world,” he said.
“This will encourage more players to be competitive and further develop the national sport at both the elite and grassroots levels.”
He said the sponsorship is part of PHA’s ongoing commitment to the people of PNG by providing insurance protection focusing on quality, affordable and accessible healthcare and personal accident insurance.
PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka said the K10 million contract signing reaffirms the memorandum of agreement both parties signed last month.
He said the contract will cater for the Team Kumul programs across the country. “The kids to Kumuls program will benefit from this sponsorship,” Tsaka said.
He said as platinum sponsors this year PHA will have their logo on the back of the PNG Kumuls jumper.
“Starting next year in 2020, the national team will be known as the PHA Kumuls until 2023 with option to renew.”
He said the PHA as major sponsors of the PNG Kumuls is a milestone and is a huge boost as we prepare our best team for the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 in England.
“PNG Health Assurance’s partnership with PNGRFL will provide insurance cover for all registered players, officials including referees and employees of PNGRFL,” Tsaka said.
He said K20 of the registration fees collected from players and officials will be paid to PHA as insurance premiums.
Tsaka said the insurance cover ranges from any form of injuries/ disability to death.
“These injuries, deaths (hopefully don’t happen) and other accidents are covered while playing or officiating at games and/or on duty for any PNGRFL event and function,” he said.
He said this partnership will start this year and end in 2020 with options to renew.
“We are elated that an insurance company for the first time has come on board to partner with the PNGRFL and cover this very important aspect of players, officials and employees welfare,” Tsaka said.
He said that Raj Juta has been invited to attend the annual general meeting in Lae next week to address all affiliated presidents on the importance of insurance cover and the benefits of the K20 premium to be paid to PNGRFL.
PNGRFL CEO Reatau Rau said the signing of the both contracts was timely.
“There are three international test matches scheduled for the Kumuls this year and their support as major sponsors is greatly appreciated to prepare our national team as best as we can,” Rau said.
He said the PHA partnership with the PNG Kumuls came as a result of the APEC meeting held in Port Moresby last November.
He said the consultation with PHA started during the APEC CEOs meeting and this partnership can be seen as a benefit of APEC to the sport of rugby league and people of PNG.
He said the contract for the Group Personal Accident Insurance cover was vital and relevant to the PNGRFL.
“This will cover all the six tiers in our structure from the six year old to players in the Digicel Cup and Confederates as well as the Kumuls and Orchids,” he said.
“We are grateful PHA has become a partner to handle all these insurance matters and claims professionally and legally.”

What is the state of the local comp at the moment? (Digicel Cup?)

Are the teams there running a professional set up or are they semi professional? I think the Hunters are professional right?

Is the goal a fully professional local comp feeding players into the Qld Cup and NRL or is a fully professional local comp not feasible?

With some of these sponsorships coming through, it sounds like there would be enough money for players to be making RL there profession in PNG.

The Digicel Cup is expanding to 12 Teams this year.
All of the Teams are semi professional but some of the better Teams like the Agmark Gurias and Lae Tigers are almost fully pro.

Digicel Cup coaches meet

THE Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition inaugural two-day coaching conference kicked off at the Oil Search National Football Stadium yesterday in Port Moresby.
Present to open the conference was PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka, PNGNRLC manager Stanley Hondina, SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum and PNG Olympics Committee rep Chris Amini, who is a facilitator of the conference.
The participants of the conference include coaches of the 12 Digicel Cup clubs, their assistant coaches and other staff.
Tsaka said the main objective of the conference was to ensure that all Digicel Cup coaches were on the same page and heading in the same direction. “We’re having this conference because we want the working relationship between all coaches and administrators to function with a common goal and wherever they are in PNG, they must be doing the same thing,” Tsaka said.
“This conference will need all coaches to give their feedback on what they do, how they do it and why they do it so in that way we can develop programmes that will help our common goal, and that is growing the game, our national sport, rugby league.
“Coaches and administrators at the Digicel Cup are the men on the group and what input they provide will give us a clearer picture on how we can improve the elite level as well as at other levels of our structure,” he said. “We have a new 10-year strategy (2019-2029) already in place and we will present it in the upcoming annual general meeting after our four-year plan (2014-2018) ended last year.”
Hondina said improving coaching and management of the game would have a positive effect on the game particularly as it related to violence.
“We have to be open minded as coaches even though we want our team to win, we have to understand the common good of the game, and this conference purposely aims to get such outcomes,” Hondina said.
All participants were also encouraged to use their Digicel Cup franchises as agents of change and participate in community engagement programmes.

Any possibility of the Solomon Islands playing in the digicel cup ME??

I think the costs would be too high for it.
The Autonomous Region Of Bougainville which is the PNG Province most nearest to the Solomon Islands does not have a Team in the Digicel Cup yet because of the cost factor.

Hunters sign on carrier

THE Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) and Air Niugini yesterday extended their agreement for another year as silver sponsors of the SP PNG Hunters.

PNGRFL chief executive Reatau Rau said the partnership covered all Hunters travel to and from Queensland during the 2019 Queensland Intrust Super Cup season.
“We are grateful to our national flag carrier Air Niugini, for continuing this vital partnership for the Hunters players and staff to travel to and from Queensland to participate in the Q-Cup competition this season,” Rau said.

Rau said Air Niugini would be the carrier of choice for the players and coaching staff to their home provinces in the event of emergencies or when the team was on a bye.
He said Air Niugini would be the carrier of choice for all visiting teams to PNG.
“Part of our participation agreement with QRL is for PNGRFL to pay the travel costs for all visiting teams to Port Moresby,” Rau said.

Air Niugini managing director Alan Milne in signing the agreement said Air Niugini as the national airline was proud to be able to continue the partnership with the PNGRFL.
“Under the agreement, Air Niugini will provide airfares for all Hunters travel to and from Queensland as well as travel within PNG,” Milne said.

Milne further said under the airline’s higher altitude programme, Air Niugini was now more focused on customer experience. “It is an honour to be your airline of choice; we will do everything possible to ensure your travel to and from Queensland as well as within PNG is carried out smoothly as per our Agreement. “Both our organisations represent PNG and it is only fitting to make Air Niugini your airline of choice,” he said.

“Air Niugini is now focusing on its staff and since Papua New Guineans love their rugby league, I believe Air Niugini staff and management are proud to be associated with a brand like the Hunters and we hope you do the same for us.” Milne said. Air Niugini is a foundation partner with the Hunters since the club was launched in 2014.
