Todd Greenberg has pretty much said one Sydney team will be relocated.

Forcing a club to move from Sydney is suicide for the NRL..

Whilst the AFL is basically moving to a 20 team comp with hobart and Perth 3 pretty much guarenteed, with minimal fanfare or hyperbole

You have inside AFL info!!! Should we be surprised??? When the AFL has minimal fanfare and little spin, you know the sun is about to implode.

Not too bad. Better than others! At least you have identified the huge issue in northern Sydney . Another one I heard today on ABC Radio was the West Coast Bears? Now that would definitely bring back many lost fans. I've spoken to plenty of Bears fans and they all would support a Bears team back in the NRL . Obviously same colours etc. and a link to North Sydney Bears in some way. But yes this made sense. It avoids further diluting of the rugby league top flight presence on Sydney. And gains back hibernating Bears fans. It's a win / win. But that doesn't seem to make sense these days.

The huge issue in NS is that manly are sht at their jobs and the Bears keep flaming deluded fans believe that they will be back one day. As you keep telling us, there are a million people between NS and Gosford, that Manly can only attract 10,000 of them is a the real disgrace.

More than a million . Plus the Central Coast. The area is underserviced. And the code's relevance is slowly but surely decreasing.

The area has a club, it just isn't dong its job in making itself relevant to the region. If Manly aren't going to be the Northern Sydney region club they might as well move down to NSW cup and a new club to represent the whole region started up.

I'm sure you know its quicker to get to Central Coast/ Newcastle from Parra than from Manly.

Geographically, Manly is northern beaches area which is split off from the rest of the world by spit bridge, ku ring gai and the hawkesbury river.

NS cbd to Manly is only 13km. It might as well be 1300 though as Manly are simply not equipped to be the club for the whole northern Sydney region that the NRL needs. For the good of the game it would be better if they were dropped to NSW cup and a new Northern Regions neutral club was formed to pull in the fanbase of this 1million plus old Bears, Many and CC fanbase. Biggest issue is where would they play? This area of million doesn't have a suitable 25k stadium. Ideally they'd have an accessible base with a decent 25k stadium and play three games at Gosford but that wont happen. The NRL in Sydney will be forever confined by its suburban mentality and difficult geography and travel it would seem.

So a new Northern Eagles but without being propped up by Manly fans? great idea.

Will you drop all the Manly players or just shift them across to this "neutral" identity? I'm sure it will be embraced by everyone.

Fans will follow the top tier, proven time and again. In a decade the new Northern club, if done well could be pulling from this million plus population and be one of Sydneys biggest clubs, as opposed to current situation where, I am being told, no one is representing it and Manly are drawing less than 9k fans in a non fit for purpose venue. If the new entity would be linked/owned or totally separate from the Manly and NS Bears could be worked out for best interests of the new entity. Would only work though if a 25k stadium became available in a suitable location.

Doesn't need to be embraced by everyone, just more than is currently engaged.

Big population does not equal big crowds. Look at the titans, look what happened with Perth.

Having said that Manly crowds are shocking.

Generally the bigger the population the bigger the fanbase, but of course comes down to how well both the sport and the individual club is run and level of interest in that particular sport in that particular region. I keep hearing from Stallion that this is a RL region and desperate for a club to represent it.

Surely the answer is not putting another club back in there that will impact and cannibilise an already failing club but create a new fresh one that can cover the whole region?

The 3 clubs that are sticking to suburban grounds (mainly due to distance) need to make sure they can still get some big gates above 20k, or in the new stadium era they'll be dooming themselves to irrelevancy and thus relocation or death.

This pretty much boils it down to the core. The clubs that are already playing at Parra, ANZ or Allianz will keep on playing out of big centralised stadia with all the mod cons & reap the rewards for doing so.

Dragons & Tigers will likely gravitate to the big stadia too, as the economics of splitting games all over the place (and to some grounds that havent got the capacity or comfort of Bankwest or New SFS.. ) make less and less sense. We can already see the Tigers dipping their toes into Bankwest Stadium this year...

Penrith, Manly & Cronulla have some big questions they need to be asking themselves - and fast.

Agree.
Part of this problem is Bears still "own" their pre-demotion boundaries, so other clubs put little thought into the area.
The best case for the Sydney game is for the Bears region to be handed to Easts and/or Manly, with assurances of them putting attention and money into it.
Manly playing out of either Gosford, or both Brookvale and Gosford, represent the Beaches, Upper North Shore, and Central Coast.
Roosters "merging" with the Bears at junior and NSW Cup level and taking on the Lower North Shore.

The North Shore and Central Coast has been ignored or half-arsed for too long, but the answer is not to add an extra club.

Spot on. I would like to think Manly could easily be a Beaches/Upper Shore/Central Coast club, and Roosters an Eastern Suburbs plus North Sydney club.

As a bonus, you could have the derby between Roosters & Sea Eagles played at North Sydney Oval each year (Saturday Afternoon), with the Roosters wearing either their red alternate OR a retro Bears jersey as a one-off.

Hell, in return for getting the Bears district the Roosters could even wear a Bear head on their sleeves.. like how the Tigers wear a little Magpie.

The question is.. would the Bears be willing to take their feeder-club arrangement with the Roosters a step further, and have juniors etc under the one shared umbrella?

Panthers are fine... Lots of development by the club with all the new residents.

Once the apartments get built and the Academy is paid off.. Happy days

Just relocate Manly to central coast. Rebrand them "Central Coast sea eagles". Keep maroon as primary colour but maybe replace white with yellow to represent beaches. I think the problem with Northern Eagles jerseys was that it just looked like Manly. Manly fans will grumble but will follow them cos they've got nothing else. Central coast will have their "own" team due to name, colourways and location.

Relocate St George to wollongong permanently. Rebrand them Southern dragons. Let them capture South Coast.

Thats 2 Sydney teams "gone".

You could even merge easts and souths. 2 heritage clubs. Play at new SFS. Red Blue and green colourscheme. Easts finally get a crowd. Souffs get some teef. Match made in heaven.

Politis - anti-forced relocation, pro-expansion. Smart man Politis.
Note the key point : The NRL can't move clubs, as long as the clubs can balance their books.

The correct answer for now is to go to 18 teams, and continue raising the standards expected of professional NRL clubs. The weak will naturally fall off if they deserve to, and the NRL should not save them.
Any of the 9 clubs regions in Sydney could be taken over by their neighbours in a generation, if they were to fall. The Bears situation is a failure of the NRL and Manly, and to a lesser extent Easts and Wests/Balmain to effectively take over this area, rather than an inevitable consequence of cutting a club.
