Coca-Cola, PNGRFL ink deal

COCA-COLA Amatil (PNG) Limited yesterday signed a five-year agreement with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) as the naming rights sponsor of the National Schools Rugby league (NSRL).

Chairman Sandis Tsaka, said PNGRFL was grateful to the company for its support towards the programme.
“This signing between Coca-Cola (Amatil) PNG and PNGRFL is a significant investment for the future of rugby league,” he said.
Tsaka said the programme provided a pathway for young players — both male and female — between the ages of 14 and 18.
“Not everybody will make it to the top level but we must use the passion that Papua New Guineans have for rugby league to encourage our young people and youths to embrace education and become better citizens and leaders of the future,” Tsaka said.

PNGRFL chief executive Reatau Rau said his office was preparing the necessary documents and programmes for next year’s competition.
“As soon as the academic year begins, we will send the necessary registration and affiliation documents for the schools to fill out and sign, so all the paper work is in order before they start their competition,” Rau said.
“The plan is to hold the Coca-Cola National Schools Championships during the second term break in July.”
Rau said prior to that, the regional championships would be held in June.
“I can assure you that it will be an experience for those selected to represent their schools and confederates,” Rau said.

He said yesterday’s signing ended months of negotiations.
“We invite corporate organisations wishing to be part of this junior development programme to get in touch with us,” Rau said.

The signing of the five-year agreement for the naming rights of the National Schools Rugby League (NSRL) competition marks a significant investment by Coca-Cola Papua New Guinea in the community.

Coca-Cola Amatil (PNG) Limited general manager Joyonto Chaudhury said: “As in any country, Coca-Cola has always strived to be a part of the fabric of and a positive contributor to communities where we operate in more than 200 countries across the globe.
“Coca-Cola recognises that rugby league is not only a sport but more than that, it could be a force of positive inspiration to the young generation of PNG.”

New head for junior comp

PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls and SP Hunters team manager Arnold Krewanty is the new head of the Coca-Cola Amatil (PNG) Limited National Schools Rugby League.

Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chief executive Reatau Rau made the announcement yesterday at the signing of a five-year agreement with Coca-Cola Amatil (PNG) Limited as the naming rights sponsor of the National Schools Rugby League.

Rau said former Kumuls and Newcastle Knights player Krewanty joined the PNGRFL in 2012 as part of the NRL Bid programme.
“In 2013, he was appointed game development manager,” he said.
“He became the first team manager of the PNG Hunters when they entered the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition in 2014.”
Rau said the investment by Coca-Cola Amatil (PNG) Ltd and other partners in junior development was crucial for the growth of the game in the country.
“We must establish this foundation and we have every confidence in you to meet the challenges that lay ahead in 2019 and beyond to develop this pathway for our juniors,” Rau said.

Krewanty said it was an honour to be appointed manager of the National Schools Rugby League.
“Many other former Kumuls and I came through the schools programme in the 1970s,” he said.
“It was exciting to be a student in those days because we played sports if we went to school.”
According to Krewanty, youngsters who want to participate in the programme must attend school.

Krewanty said registration forms and other necessary documents would be prepared and sent to schools as soon as the academic year begins.
“We want to make sure that the proper processes and requirements are met before schools begin the competition,” he said.

Krewanty thanked PNGRFL for his appointment.
“I will give it every ounce of energy and commitment to ensure the Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League programme produces not only a pathway for good rugby league players but good, educated citizens of PNG,” he said.
“I thank Coca-Cola for the investment and I would like to assure you all that this is the start of an exciting journey for every Papua New Guinean child.”

Great news, any idea of the amount? or what it will mean for PNG now? Will they go on tours of Aus like the Aussies go to the UK, for example?

Amazing what happens when you are the national sport in your country. PNGRL seem to have the Government and corporations throwing money at them. Great to see!

Be nice to see them be invited to enter a team or two into the current school boy knock out comp in Oz. May not get far but be good experience for the kids if given a game in Oz.
