In terms of the payments side of things it wasn't a case of Asquith just deciding to scrap the hobbyist system. That decision was in response to a rule introduced by the NSWRL that mandated that players had to be treated as employees and pay tax, receive medical benefits etc etc,
Ridiculous idea from NSWRL that only lasted 1 year.
Some clubs ignored the rule but Asquith decided to follow it and that put them at a serious disadvantage against those other clubs.

Makes sense.

Was never really sure why they introduced it, but that explains it.

Its actually one of the better grounds in the competition. Was sensational last weekend. It gets a bit of use so by the end of the season it's a bit worse for ware as every ground is by that time.
The playing surface might be ok. But the facilities are a joke, theres no parking only the bowling club. When they kick for goal at one end the ball goes into the bowling club and the other into the bushes. Hilarious for RMC level.

It's one of the last great suburban grounds. Rugby League historians will discuss Storey Park Stadium in the same breath as Leochardt Oval, Kogarah, 2000s Brookvale etc.

Changed your opinion on the coach yet? Pretty sure when he got the job you were a harsh critic. If the environment is good it starts with the coaching staff. So does the players recruited to the club or in many cases not recruited.

He does seem to have got it right. I was a critic based on his actions in the past. But good on him if he has changed

It will go down in history for different reasons. I used to hear about the reputation of the crowd and how feral they would get towards the visiting sides.
The funny thing is recently it actually has a more relaxed and family type feel

Based on his actions or based on rumours you heard? I am sure the 40 players and staff who won't work or play for anyone else will say the only thing that has changed is the club he's at and the other change is your opinion is now based on what you see rather then who you listen to.

A couple of players have already changed clubs during the 2019 season:

Sam Smith played round 2 for St Marys but is now in the Blacktown NSW Cup team
Feao Lavemai played round 1 in SS for Asquith then moved to Wenty where he is playing RMC

Sam smith was contracted to Penrith. Gus “released” him.

Round 5

RMC
Mounties 31 Glebe Burwood 24
Wenty 20 Wests 6
Brothers 32 Blacktown 12
Hills 24 Cabra 12
St Marys 44 Guildford 16
Asquith bye

St Marys, Mounties and Wenty all sit on 4 wins 1 loss. St Marys have a very strong side and have added to their squad with Cowan Epere returning last week after a stint with Wests ISP and George Tsikrikas made his debut today. St Marys led 18-0 after 15 minutes and anything looked possible, To Guildford's credit they steadied and when just after half time, Josh Lewis intercepted and ran 70 metres to score, the margin was 20-10 but that was as good as it got. Guildford have added Matt Woods, who was player of the year for Wenty ISP last year, to their roster, but they have missed the thrust of Dom Reardon in the last 2 games. John Faiumu and Jake Toby had great games while Vave attracted 4 tacklers every time he took the ball forward.

The Bulldogs NSW Cup team today had 7 guys who have played for Cabra this season but Hills led from go to whoa with Pat Bolea scoring 3 tries. Ellie El Zhakhem has already played all 3 grades - 2 games in SS, 1 in RMC and 1 in NSW Cup. Blacktown racked up its 5th consecutive loss while Glebe Burwood and Wests join them in the bottom 3 with both sides having only a win against Blacktown.

SS
Ryde Eastwood 22 Sydney Uni 18
Cabra 36 Hills 16
Guildford 46 St Marys 20
East Campbelltown 34 Wenty 16
Asquith 52 Belrose 10
Brothers, Moorebank byes

In the first few rounds St Marys SS has masked the weakness of the side by the inclusion Marli Sini, Tom Romer, Shannan Wood, John Faiumu, who are now back in RMC and Ratu Tuisese who is back in NSW Cup. Without these guys in SS St Marys will win very few games. East Campbelltown and Cabra both have 5 wins.

Sorry did you mean 7 players in Bulldogs NSW this week had played for Cabra ?

Not sure whats happening with Cabra's RM. They should be doing much better.
Especially when their SS are doing well.

dog inserted for you. I originally wrote Canterbury but thought that would be confusing since that is the sponsorship name attached to competition. Some of the Bulldogs are OK but others are just guys out Flegg last year and not up to RMC standard but they get put in the team anyway. The Bulldogs playing in the SS make a contribution due to the lower standard of that comp.

Houma, Gorman and Latham have not played a game. I assume that the latter 2 are still injured from last season but what is the story with Houma?

Are the bulldogs sending their extra Flegg boys to Cabra this year? Last year they were going to Moorebank..

No, all the Flegg go to Moorebank. Saddler has played 3 games for Moorebank this year and he is in the Bulldogs top 30. All the dogs at Cabra are from ISP - not all play RMC some are in SS. Yesterday 2 Norths ISP guys played SS against Belrose and at the same time 3 Asquith guys are picked in the NSW Cup team.

Curtis Johnston is the second player to play all 3 grades this season - 2 in NSW Cup, 2 in RMC and 1 in SS.

Houma is no longer with Cabramatta as he was told he was going to play shield. If he had stayed at Newtown he would still be playing in the Canterbury Cup

Houma, Kiel and Simona have all walked away because of issues with Yates.
Yates has let quite a few quality players walk out. Example tom harris last year he was the captain all season until the grand final qualifier where he was dropped and Yates son played instead.

Good to see players moving between grades gives hope for those playing SS and RMC
