Years ago the university rep match was played as a curtin raiser before the state of origin. Mark Taylor, the former Australia cricket captain played as full back for NSW when he was a student at UNSW.

That was in 1983 and it was actually a curtain raiser for the Australia v NZ Test - the famous Greg Dowling / Kevin Tamati punch up on the sideline after they had been sent off.

Shame this University representative fixture has been relegated to a relatively minor ground and event. I had the honour of playing for NSW tertiary students at Lang Park in a lead up curtain raiser match to a Kangaroos v Kiwis test in 1993. The Queensland Students were coached by Fatty Vautin. NSW were coached by the late John McMartin (70s/80s Cronulla&Parramatta hooker) We won 22-18.
