LISTEN: The concerning trend plaguing the Dragons

Magic Round 9 of the NRL season was a memorable one for a number of clubs that stepped up to take the two points. St George Illawarra wasn’t one of them.

The Dragons looked to be in control at Suncorp Stadium when they led a reshuffled New Zealand 18-6 at half time on Saturday, but the Warriors bounced back fiercely to win the game 26-18 and break a three-game losing streak.

It was a stunning comeback by Kodi Nikorima’s new side and injected some much-needed confidence into the club, but does the result exacerbate a worrying pattern for the Dragons? On today’s episode of the Game of Codes podcast, we asked Roar rugby league expert Joe Frost just that, along with what it all means for Paul McGregor.

The late blitz by New Zealand over the weekend marks the fourth major fadeout by the Dragons this season, who have been outscored 116-50 in second halves so far in 2019:

• Round 1: Trailed Cowboys 8-6 at HT, lost 24-12
• Round 2: Led Souths 12-6 at HT, lost 34-18
• Round 8: Led Parra 14-6 at HT, lost 32-18
• Round 9: Led Warriors 18-6 at HT, lost 26-18

St George Illawarra fans will be hoping this doesn’t translate into another forgettable back-end of the season, which the club has struggled with virtuallyevery year since 2015.

No way the board would do this 4 games after extending hid contract. They will look like the fools they Are ! Best hope is someone get him pissed and put him behind the wheel in a car and call the cops. Even then he would get off.
I understand what you are saying and what you say is common sense and probably the way most clubs would proceed. But we are dealing with a different animal here, everything done in the past 8 years has shown us that SGI management do not act in the best interest of the club.

So if a deal was done as payback for other deals done then the scenario I put forward could occur. What if the Board did not want to extend Mary but was obliged to do so because of past agreements. What if a condition of WIN coming on board was to honour this deal and appoint Johnston as CEO. If that is the case and IF the Board want to be successful, sacking Mary due to poor performance prior to 30 June would make sense.

True to form, mary doesn't change a winning team, but then he doesn't change a losing team either.

Go figure...

Ok, if he won't make changes to send a message to the playing group, then he at least must bare some of the burden and fix his use of the interchange.

If KSims is fit then he should replace aitken imo...

Sims on verge of early return for slumping Dragons

Some St George Illawarra players may be playing for their positions in Sunday’s match against Newcastle, with forward Korbin Sims set to lead the return of the club’s sidelined stars after being named in an extended 21-man squad for the trip to Mudgee.

Sims has played just two matches in the Red V after breaking his arm in the round four defeat of the Knights, while Gareth Widdop and Corey Norman are also on the injured list and Jack de Belin has been stood down since the start of the season under the NRL’s “no fault stand down” policy.

After winning four consecutive matches, the Dragons have lost their last three to slump to 10th place on the NRL ladder but the return of the big names will provide a significant boost to the team’s Telstra Premiership ambitions.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor will have a clearer idea of Sims' availability on Wednesday.

If Sims doesn’t play against Newcastle on Sunday, he would be expected to make his comeback in the May 26 clash with Cronulla at WIN Stadium and Norman is considered a chance of returning in the same match or the following one after fracturing his cheekbone two weeks ago against Parramatta.

Widdop is not due back until August after undergoing shoulder surgery six weeks ago but he was a welcome sight for team-mates at training on Tuesday as he practised goal-kicking while they completed an extended ball work session.

Is it time to get over Ben Hunt's 2015 GF drop?

De Belin also trained and the NSW State of Origin lock appears ready to explode into action if he is successful in his legal challenge to the NRL’s “no fault stand down” policy, with Federal Court judge Melissa Perry expected to hand down her decision this week.

The unavailability of the star quartet has severely tested the Dragons forward depth, as Test second-rower Tyson Frizell has also spent time on the sideline after suffering a ruptured testicle in the opening round loss to North Queensland.

Blake Lawrie, Jacob Host and Luciano Leilua effectively shared an interchange position last season but all three have been regular members of the Dragons' 17-man squad this season.

Lawrie has been starting in place of de Belin, with Host and Leilua on the interchange bench along with veteran forward Jeremy Latimore and centre Euan Aitken.

The injuries and unavailability of de Belin has meant representative props James Graham and Paul Vaughan are playing longer minutes.

Graham played 66 minutes in last Saturday’s 26-18 loss to the Warriors and 53 minutes the previous weekend against the Eels, while Vaughan played 51 minutes and 58 minutes in the corresponding matches.

In both games, the Dragons held a strong first-half lead – being ahead 14-0 against Parramatta and 18-6 against the Warriors – but fell away in the second half.

Annesley discusses key decisions from Round 9

“It’s disappointing, our two halves have been like two totally differently teams the past two weeks,” Frizell said.

“It’s hard to say what it was exactly – a lack of concentration, I guess. It’s pretty difficult to put your finger on and not let it happen but it’s something we need to change. It’s happened two weeks in a row now and only us players can fix that.

“We are doing everything we can preparation wise to get ourselves in the right mindset, we know the structures and the things we have in place within the team are perfect, we don’t need to change anything. It’s just our mindset and the way we start our halves is letting us down.”

Mary blasts Dragons over second half fade out
Tyson Frizell says the team got a stern talking to after their performance against the Warriors in round 9.

Mary should give himself an uppercut, wanker.
If he got his bench rotations right we'd be travelling a lot better.
It won't improve either because he'll keep stuffing it up and putting more pressure on Graham and Vaughan, they'll be rooted by round 16 and then watch us really go downhill.

I am shocked! Mary has made no changes to our team. As if he was ever going to. No need to make changes seeing we have won three games on the trot.....oh sorry Mary and I must be confused. We both must have failed our HIA test.

previous weeks with lomax on bench coach threw him on as a forward ( same as mann countless times ) YET against warriors Aitken was used to replace a centre ( like for like ) why couldnt aitken have been used like every other replacement in the forwards ???? yet another masterstroke use of the bench forwards are buggered so put a fresh set of legs out wide....
I hope to high heaven that Korbin is fit enough to be in the 17 and how i wish he would replace lats.

If Mary is at K. Simms to return early to help the team, l don't want him back.
I'd rather he take the full term to make sure he's healed.
Mary has a way of pushing players to either, play while injured and or come back early to help the team ............. and end up going off injured again, then Mary bitches about injuries holding the team back and loses because of it.

Again ...................... don't want him back till he's heal 100%!
Mary, do your job and shuffle the team instead of playing non compliant players in ist grade.

A stern talking to.................... after three loses ..................... Wow, l'm petrified now.
There's the difference.
McGuire would have turned blue and scared the bejesus out of the players after the first loss and dropped non performing ( Rava-Useless ) to name but one, player.

OK, I've had a bit of time to calm down and think about this game.
Surely we win against Knights?
They are due a loss and we are due a win. Dragons in a blowout.
Then the following week we go down to WIN and beat Sharks in an arm wrestle before having the week off with the bye and watch a bit of Origin.
Dragons.....

Five Things: Round 10 v Knights

Five things: Round 10 v Knights

The St George Illawarra Dragons travel to Mudgee's Glen Willow Stadium to take on the Newcastle Knights in a crucial Round 10 clash. Below are five things to know before the Dragons kick-off on Sunday, May 19 at 2pm.

Back to Mudgee

The Dragons will apply their trade in front of a passionate Mudgee contingent for the fourth time since 2018. The only NRL Telstra Premiership game of the lot came against the Canberra Raiders in Round 11, 2018. With the scores locked at 10-all at half-time, the Dragons came home strong to win 25-18.

Their most recent game was against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the 2019 Westfund Charity Shield; the score line falling out of reach for the Dragons with the Rabbitohs winning 36-24.

Double Dragon

When St George Illawarra travel to Mudgee, they won't be the only Dragons in town. The local Mudgee rugby league team is known as the Mudgee Dragons and compete in the Group 10 competition.

The Mudgee Dragons are enjoying a strong start to their season, sitting second on the ladder after losing just once in five games. Hopefully their winning ways transfer to St George Illawarra Dragons ahead of Sunday.

Glen Willow Stadium

Sunday's match will take place Glen Willow Oval, Mudgee. Officially opened in April 2012, the oval has hosted six games since 2012 (two City-Country fixtures, two Charity Shields and two NRL games).

The 10,000 seat ground has been near-capacity each time and another capacity crowd is expected to turn out on Sunday.

Knights to the sword

You don’t have to stretch your memory back far to remember the last time the Dragons came up against the Knights. A Corey Norman field goal was the only thing separating the pair in an extra-time thriller, also continuing a rich vein of success over the Hunter-based side.

The Dragons have won eight of the last 10 matches against the Knights and overall, have won 27 of 38 games played. However, the Knights are a chance of winning four matches in a row if they trump the Dragons on Sunday, a feat they haven’t achieved since the opening four rounds of 2015.

Hunt v Pearce

Two storied Origin halves meet once again in the NRL arena. Hunt and Pearce have played plenty of games each for their state but question marks hang over whether they will make an appearance in the 2019 series.

The same was said in their Round 4 clash with Hunt getting the better of Pearce and helping the Dragons to a tight one-point win. In their final regular season meeting for the year, keep an eye on who comes out on top.

As well as screwing up the bench rotation there are comments about not resting injured players.
McIdiot picks players that have not fully recovered from injuries, players will always want to get back on the field, but rushing them back before they are not fully recovered should not happen
Remember JDB last season, he played quite a few games injured and on pain killers, not the way to handle one of our marquee players
