French News

Yep, I appreciate that Monsieur adamkungl …

What I was talking about was juniors … have, say, 4-5 of the top French juniors (16, 17, 18 years old) each year come out on an NRL scholarship for a season to train and possibly play for an NRL junior rep team/s.

Hopefully they can then return to France and develop into better players.

As for adult French players, even having some of them come and play Canterbury Cup or InTrust Super Cup is helpful … Tony Gigot was going nowhere, came and played a season in Cronulla reserves and returned a vastly improved player.

Oh for an NRL or an ARLC with a long-term global focus !

Allez rugby a XIII !

It would be great for France, you are right.

My criticism isn't of the idea, but it's impossible to see NRL clubs investing in foreign juniors without it being very very easy and cheap for them to do so.

Now if the FFRXIII could fund an annual u18s tour of Australia and put their best up against some of our Junior rep squads and get them right in the NRL scouts faces, then we might be onto something.

Alas, $$$. Maybe they should start with Super League and work their way up

Not sure the ffrxiii are that keen to be sending their best overseas, even if it is the NRL. It's the sporting equivalent of brain drain and does little to help the local comps/teams.

We want to be developing france into a self sufficient entity, not just another nrl/esl feeder.

Also fair.

How, if ever, does the Elite One ever make the jump to full professionalism?

Is Catalans and Toulouse playing the best players in the English system helping or hindering?

https://www.rugbypass.com/news/the-...-club-rumour-that-isnt-as-crazy-as-it-sounds/

Just months after reports spread that a Canadian Rugby League team was going all out to sign Sonny Bill Williams, a new seemingly unlikely transfer rumour is doing the rounds.

In February it was revealed that Williams has been reportedly offered a NZ$5m one year deal to return to rugby league with the Toronto Wolfpack.

The billionaire behind the team – David Argyle – told Fox Sports at the time that: “We are working towards making Sonny Bill Williams a Wolfpack player for 2020. We would love to have him join the Wolfpack family and we will pay whatever it takes to make that happen,” said Argyle.

However, there have been no new developments on that front, and a new rugby league team has entered the fray to sign the All Black superstar.

A source has told RugbyPass that Super League club the Catalan Dragons have put Williams at the top of their wishlist, and the move might not be as outrageous as it first sounds.

Steve McNamara – the current head coach of Catalan Dragons – coached Williams when he was an assistant coach at NRL side the Sydney Roosters in 2014.

McNamara is also a huge fan of Williams, telling the Guardian in 2014 that: “We get on great. We had a Roosters golf day and I was fortunate to be Sonny Bill’s partner. We spent four hours on a buggy chatting to each other. He’s an outstanding athlete – and very humble as well.”

More recently McNamara penned a column in The Times extolling the virtues of the code-hopper’s offloading game.

It may be irrelevant, but the South of France may hold a special resonance for Williams.
The club is not without ambition either. Last month the Dragons showed their intent with the signature of 6’5, 20 stone NRL prop Sam Kasiano from the Melbourne Storm.

However, Dragons will have to fight off global interest from both codes of rugby.

According to a report by Nine Wide World of Sports, the Bulldogs and Sonny Bill Williams have engaged in informal talks about a potential return to the club, albeit one he infamously walked out on in 2008.

The report states that Williams has kept ties with the club and was due to present the players with their jerseys in Auckland last weekend before the events of Friday took precedent. A return to the Bulldogs would bring Williams career back to where he started in 2004, debuting as a professional footballer at 19-year-old.

Toulon have also made no secret of their desire to resign Williams, although the fallout over the treatment of ex-All Black and SBW teammate Julian Savea at the club may have put pay to that.

Eitherway, the centre will be focused on retaining his place in the All Blacks set, as he bids to see off the Super Rugby form of Blues teammate Ma’a Nonu, who kept him on the bench during the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Another past his best overseas player taking the place of a Frenchman.

The papuan winger of Carcassonne XIII, Garry Lo, arouses much covetousness among our cousins.

In great shape since his arrival in Carcassonne in January, Garry Lo has a great time on the lawns of Elite 1. His performances do not leave indifferent some stables of Pro D2, notably the US Carcassonne, which sent members of his staff supervise the Papuan winger last weekend in the spans of Albert Domec.

In addition, the agent of the player would have proposed his client to several teams of Pro D2 which could be tempted to attach his services. There are also Championship and League 1 teams that are on the spot.

The Lo rush will probably start soon!

I have just listened to the interview above. Main points:

- well structured. admin team, foreign coach, good sponsors ready to go
- support of montpellier
- specifically targeting players on the edge of Toulouse and Dragons rosters
- ex-NRL and ESL french player
- 2-3 aus nz players signed apparently
- saturday night games marketed as events (Djs etc. etc.)

No menton at all of any pre-existing structure in Montpellier, which is a little odd.

Conctacted their facebook page about association with Montpellier Red Devils, taciturne response that there is no association with them. So looks like another one of those typically rugby league situtations lol.

Is 2 Rugby League clubs in the city a bad thing? There's not really any reason for them to have any association, aside from not treading on each others toes.

Red Devils are completely amateur. Looks like the Sharks have much greater plans to be semi-pro, so don't see the need to work together. Montpellier is a big city.

Does anyone recall plans out of the FFR a couple of years ago about a new professional big city league that they were apparently gonna launch?

Wasn’t it supposed to be played in the off season?

I’m sure their was also talk of Catalan having a reserve grade team play in England too.

Really impressed with a few of the youngsters in the dragons reserve grade side. Players like salabio, cozza, morgues, seguier and Martin need to move onto English super league sides because they are too good for elite1 and unfortunately will never get a look in at the dragons first team.

Hopefully Toulouse look at picking some of them up too - even if they remain in the Championship from next year it will still be a good step up for these guys.

If / when Toulouse make SuperLeague in the coming seasons, I hope another French club enter league 1 / championship so that France maintain the professional pathways for players without having to leave France: Elite 1 - Championhip - SuperLeague

If Toulouse make super league I really hope that they don’t go down the dragons route of stacking their team with overseas players and above average overseas players at that.

As for a 3rd French team in the U.K. lower leagues structure this all depends on what happens with league1 and if the RFL scrap it.

It's a shame that the Dragons produce quality talent but never get the chance to cement a spot. You have no name players come into the dragons side and get first picked. Players like Langi, Whitley, Kasiano, Tierney, Edwards and Smith are no better than what they can produce with local talent. Romano had an awesome step on the Warrington fullback and has played very well but he will get drop at the drop of a hat for Tierney. Goudemand and Jullien are two talented players that are struggling for game time currently.
