I rate Croker very highly but unfortunately he's a specialist left centre, all the little traits that set him apart from a lot of other centres are only effective if you play him on the left.
He's got a left foot step inside that's very dangerous, left foot short kicking game and most importantly left hand carry and left hand offload/flick pass to his winger, all the little things he has up his sleeve would be neutralised if you play him on the right

With the exception of injuries, leave the squad as close as it was from last year.If it doesn't work out, then make the necessary changes. Every year, those around the media want changes for the usual mysterious reasons, and the coaches respond with a knee-jerk reaction and give in to those changes.

And so if they do make changes to the Blues side IE the halves, and they end up losing the first game, where do they go from there?..everyone starts to sending an SOS to the Penrith halves?

For me personally it is a win/win situation. They don't get picked, they'll be playing club football. They are picked, a win for NSW.

No one would send an SOS to the Penrith halves. They aren't Andrew Johns or Allan Langer. The reasons aren't mysterious, people are calling for changes because Maloney and Cleary are playing like dogshit, just like Roberts.

Little bit of mail going round the papers that Freddy’s considering Aubusson for right center and Ryan Matterson for the bench utility

Matterson would go okay. Aubusson would probably go okay too but there are more deserving in front of him considering he doesn't even make the starting side at his club.

Has a player for either qld or nsw ever been selected while playing in the second grade before?
Surprised nobody else has mentioned it but I think you'll find Arthur Beetson was selected to captain QLD in the very first Origin while he was running around in reserve grade at Parramatta.

Jennings was selected a few weeks after being dropped to reserve grade at Penrith in 2011 or 12 I think.

If I'm Kevin Walters I'm praying NSW don't pick Payne Haas.
Imagine the carnage he'd cause off the bench after Klemmer and Vaughan set the platform early on.

No-one has mentioned it because it isn't correct. Beetson played first grade in rounds 13, 14 and 15 in 1980, these were the three rounds immediately preceding the first Origin match.

Wikipedia's entry on this match states that Beetson was in reserve grade when approached by Ron McAuliffe to play in the match, but doesn't say when that approach was made. If true, it must have been several weeks out.

Crazy talk. Players picked for representative football should be playing well when the games come around. Some of incumbency (namely the halves) are playing atrociously. There are better options available right now.

Picking this team on the form of 12 months ago is the way you lose the series. Fittler would be falling into the trap of those before him. He selects the best players now, the same way he picked the best players at the time 12 months ago.

1-0 in a state of origin series is massive

The halves are not playing as bad as the rest of the Penrith side, so I don't know where you get the atrocious playing from. Putting them into a SOO side that knows how to win is the magic ingredient. Chop and change, and we will be playing right into the QLD hands.

Did you watch Cleary last night?

Missed tackles - Maloney #1 in the comp
Penalties conceded - Maloney #1 in the comp
Try assists - Cleary #26, Maloney #29
Linebreak assists - Cleary #14, Maloney #41
Line breaks - neither on top 50

For reference Kenny Bromwich has more try assists than Maloney or Cleary.

Keary would have been penciled in by Freddy last September imo.

In Gong Panthers defence, he did say they are not playing as bad as the rest of the team. But that team is f**king deplorable.

Maloney's short kicking was pretty good last night. Cleary looks bloody horrible in nearly all aspects of attack - even his simple passing game was poor last night.

I wrote at the beginning of this thread that Maloney's time in rep jerseys was over. There are simply much better players. It will shock me if Freddy picks him unless major injuries hit all the halves NSW currently has over the next couple rounds.
