Earthquake
A big event movie back in 1975 , part of the disaster movie cycle of the 70s . Purchased it recently on blu ray and gave it a watch today. Surprisingly enjoyed it on blu ray, the movie looked crisp and sharp, better than anytime I have seen it since the cinema. I'm not going to kid myself, it is not a great movie, it was easy to gloss over the imperfections back in the 70s because it was done on such a grand scale but the years haven't been so kind to it. I have been critical over it over the years but for some reason I enjoyed it more today, maybe because of a good print and on a big screen TV. The story is mainly about an Earthquake which devastates Los Angeles and how it effects its inhabitants, it is mainly a soap opera build up, some characterisations are good, some are just down right creepy. Charlton Heston is pretty good as an architect who is split between his shrew wife played by Ava Gardner and a younger love interest Geneviève Bujold, ,George Kennedy is excellent as the good cop but Marjoe Gortner plays a psychotic national guard which is down right creepy, he stalks and tries to rape Victoria Principal [ who looks stunning in this movie wearing a tight yellow t shirt and leathers despite having an afro wig] and shoots dead 3 thugs who had taunted him earlier. Considering it was made in 1974 before major CGI some of the special effects still hold up well but some are downright bad, an elevator crashes to the bottom of shaft, it should be a tense and scary scene but in the end it shows cartoon blood splattered all over the screen, it leads to plenty of laughter, also there is a scene where a lady gets hit in the head by a pane of glass but you can already see the glass sticking out of head before the pane of glass hits her. Despite all its short comings I still found it suspenseful with the rescue from being trapped in the basement and the dam breaking at the end and some of the matte painting backgrounds by Albert Whitlock are still excellent 45 years on.

A good popcorn flick with some good and some bad special effects, some good and some bad acting and some generally spine tingling moments and some absolutely unintentionally laughable moments too.

Burnt Offerings

Muddled but intriguing horror drama, young family with elderly aunt in tow rent a sprawling mansion for the summer holidays for a ridiculously low rent, the only catch is they have to provide 3 meals a day to an unseen elderly woman who supposedly lives in the attic. The house is quite run down but mysteriously starts regenerating itself after the family moves in, the family members start having personality changes and the elderly aunt grows weaker and weaker and eventually dies as the house becomes newer and newer, the mother becomes possessed and actually ends up being the elderly woman in the attic, the father and son try to escape the house but all their exit paths are blocked and both end up dying violently at the end, it is a bit of a muddled mess but held together by some great acting by Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Bette Davis. Bette Davis has only a relatively small role but has a great confrontation scene with Karen Black , she also has a smashing death scene.

Im surprised nobody has made a comment about it, but I saw "Brightburn" during the week. I thought the movie worked really well with consistent tension and a great performance from the child in the movie. 4 out of 5 for me.

Yep. In those days movies had to have an engaging story not just cgi.

John Wick 3

I enjoyed the new innovative ways he ways he found to kill people
The cinematography was amazing in this movie, really good shots

New characters and bosses didn’t add anything. Still an enjoyable movie

A better superman movie DC have made recently

Godzilla King of the Monsters was just okay. Most of the best shots were in the trailer and there were too many dumbass human characters. The mother in particular was horrid.

Rocket man - enjoyed it, haven't read any bios or been much if an Elton fan so can't comment on the accuracy that Hollywood seems to think is optional with these type of movies. If it doesn't get anything else it is S shorten for best costumes at the Oscar's, some of his outfits are hilarious

Gone Girl

I want to like the ending, but ultimately it left me wanting a hard and certain resolution (other than Affleck's life now being completely f**ked for at least the next 18 years).

At least it wasn't as bad an ending as Zodiac (also directed by Fincher), and yes I am aware that the zodiac killer was never caught, I was just surprised they didn't produce a made-up Hollywood ending.

Loved the ending. Haven't seen it in a few years but the lawyer saying something like "you two living under the same roof? You two are the most f**ked-up people I have ever met, and I specialise in f**ked-up people,”

lol that was a good call on Tyler Perry's part. Dude needs more serious roles, except for Alex Cross which was pretty f**king terrible

Remember reading an interview with Neil Patrick Harris about his "scene" in gone girl and the difficulties he had being..well him. Apparently she was stuffing up on purpose just to be a jerk and more takes required. Dude is definitely a professional

Brutal. Pretty sure that scene is where the term being honeydicked came from.

Chris Stuckmann on YouTube reckons that the NPH character is useless and unnecessary - I'd like to hear his theory on how she is able to "escape her captor" and return to her husband without arousing suspicion (other than Affleck and the female detective of course).

NPH played it beautifully, you (well, I) got the feeling that he was obsessed with her, and when she came back to him he picked up right from where they were back in high school, it was like no time had passed in his eyes and mind.

I thought it was great, just the ending left me wanting more, like her or Affleck's death, although what he got was probably a pain worse than death.

Godzilla II : King of the monsters.
Wasn’t a huge fan of the previous Godzilla and this one is a lot better, but still not great. Some of the action is really good but too much people stuff handled poorly. I did actually like the scene with the “twist” about the mother though. Her motivations are pretty scary because I see people in today’s world who would do exactly what she did.
