Pearce wasn't available because of an injury but had he been it would have been interesting to see if they had gone for him as he is in great form

The thing about Pearce is at Origin level he isn't a halfback. He is more a five eighth

He is a big human and a great defender, has excellent passing skills and vision in and around the line that sets up runners to break through defensive lines

What he lacks is a top notch kicking game - which is exactly what you need at Origin level

All those years Mitch played, Queensland dominated field position. NSW only ever had the ball coming off their own line. That's a world for forwards. Mitch got the ball and kicked it straight to Slater, Inglis, Boyd or Gagai etc and NSW gave away a penalty. Queensland spend 25 more minutes attacking, score, rinse and repeat

They weren't games that showcased Mitchell's best attributes. Had he played a supporting role to a player with an exceptional long kicking and organization game it would have been different. That was Reynolds and NSW never picked them together.

Nah - he is an origin dud pure and simple.

He's played with Soward, Maloney, Hodko who have long kicking games.

His game is summed up in the gif where he bungles a 4 on 1 overlap on the attacking 22 by hogging the ball instead of doing any sort of pass to the outside.

It was very hard for him playing against 4 immortals and I don't think he should be in the current team, but had History been different and Queensland not so dominant he would be judged differently

If he played now, as the secondary half I believe he would be fine. He just isn't a team leader at this level

True but thats the kind of thinking that got him selected in 15 and 17.

great club player but for whatever reason had the origin yips. Similar to k gidley

Maybe hes not great playing in new teams. Took him a while to get going at the knights.

he was the best half NSW had in all those years on ability. he just did not have a good knack for managing the game.

in reality, anyone else except Fittler and Johns would've struggled against Lockyer, Cronk, Thurston and Smith. hodko won a series, but one of the most integral blokes out of that quartet (cronk) was missing in that one. in pressure situations, he's the calmest of the lot of them and can just get the team back onto the process. that was missing in 2014.

Losing to the Champions he lost to painted a poor picture of his abilities at this level

If he'd had say Kalyn Ponga running off his hip we might all be sitting here talking about Pearce's abilities to put players into great positions

But even today with the sides way more evenly balanced, I still reckon Mitch would have to be the second player to a better organiser

In some instances I agree however there were multiple games/series where he had every opportunity to win us a series and he failed. 2012,13 & then in particular 17 were all times if he was good enough he could have won the series for his team.

2013 decider NSW were camped on he QLD tryline and he came up with nothing. That’s the famous gif where NSW have the deep backline set and he runs across field dummying then does a 3m grubbed for himself straight to the defence.

2017 was the worst. QLD had absolutely nothing, well behind in game 2 in Sydney and he couldn’t ice it.

If his papers weren’t marked before that game they sure as hell should have been as soon as it finished.

LOL. Please. He is complete garbage on anything resembling a big stage. People forget he was also aimlessly incompetent in both his Grand Final appearances.

Joey says some strange things. He was toutiing Josh Dugan for 5/8 at one stage.

There's no denying he's the form half in the comp atm. But it seems like Mitch doesn't want the pressure, and nobody wants him their either.
