A fantastic all-round game by Tristan Sailor has propelled the Dragons to a powerful 28-6 win over the Warriors in Auckland on Saturday afternoon, in a game played in blustery conditions.

The Warriors enjoyed an excellent start, forcing three repeat sets forcing the kick-off return all the way back over the Dragons’ goal line. The visitors did very well to hold the Warriors out, eventually forcing an error.

Warriors five eighth Adam Keighran burst through after nine minutes, almost scoring in the corner, but a perfect cover tackle by Sailor saved a certain try.

Sailor was in the action not long after, chiming into the line off some nice work by Adam Clune and providing the last pass to send Jordan Pereira over for the game’s first try after 14 minutes. The fullback then judged the wind perfectly, landing the conversion from the sideline.

The home side hit back shortly after, when Keighran showed some great skill off a set that seemed to be going nowhere. After putting a kick along the deck, he managed to grab the deflection and popped a pass for Phillip Makatoa to dive over in the corner. Like Sailor, he put in a perfect kick to convert and lock up the scores at 6-6.

A fast set saw the Dragons threaten again with nine minutes left in the half, and the Warriors had no choice but to concede a ruck penalty close to their line. Sailor edged them in front with the shot just to the right of the posts.

Pereira then cut his way back through a couple of weak tackle attempts to score his second, giving the Dragons a handy 14-6 lead at the break.

Sailor again edged the Dragons further ahead with a penalty goal shortly after the restart, before Clune scored a spectacular try off his

Pereira then cut his way back through a couple of weak tackle attempts to score his second, giving the Dragons a handy 14-6 lead at the break.

Sailor again edged the Dragons further ahead with a penalty goal shortly after the restart, before Clune scored a spectacular try off his own kick that was taken and offloaded by winger Jason Saab close to the line. In fact, the Dragons deprived the Warriors of the ball for almost the first 10 minutes of the half.

They finally got a break after a bad lifting tackle saw Lachlan Timm, Joe Lovodua and Eli Levido all put on report.

The ensuing attacking set saw Sean Mullany held up over the line, but that was as close as the Warriors would get. With 20 minutes to go, though, they seemed destined to score - however a pass from Hayze Perham ended up in the hands of Dragons’ second rower Jackson Ford. He had 90 metres to run, outpacing Adam Pompey and Cole Waaka to score under the posts to make the score 28-6.

That strike effectively killed off any hope of a Warriors comeback. The result anchors them near the foot of the table, while the Dragons picked up their first win in three games.

Masters as a right centre still has a long way to go. He failed to set up his winger - Saab - all game long. His tendency to hold onto the ball and angle in towards the middle was a blight on the game yesterday.

I'd like to see Rava selected at 3 in reserve grade and a program of personal training devised to help correct his defensive and positional game in that position. Surely, Cooper or Gasnier or even Mary could mentor and coach him to be a good right centre. So if we don't land a decent centre this year or next.

Probably one of his better games, but tbh the Warriors were very ordinary.
Like Dufty and even Field, his size would restrict him at f/b or wing with only the halves being his destination.

So why are we bringing through so many small halves and very few big wingers and centres.

If you saw the game yesterday our CC had a spine of Sailor at fullback and 3 part-timers filling in at 6 (Foster) , 7 (Clune) and 9 (Levido) so hardly bringing through anybody.
Apparently, not confirmed, that we have won the signature of Jayden Sullivan. This is one player that we need to get through the barriers. We also have a very good fullback (name escapes me) who is finishing his studies this year and will join us in 2020. He is playing 1st grade already for the Cherrypickers. Again the barriers will have to be hurdled before anyone of promise gets an opportunity with us. Hence why McGregor was "excited" at the return of our 32yr old to 1st grade and why Timm and Kerr played CC yesterday.

Your right, those two players are promising youngster who, going on current experience, even if they are up to it, won't be selected in first grade for years to come.

It is normal that we keep some and let some go and then recruit to fill in the gaps. The problem is - for whatever reason - we seem to be letting some good ones go and keeping others we just cannot use.

As I was saying yesterday Possm, our issues run very deep. Yes, we let go some good ones, but most want to leave, as will be the case for more and more of our best juniors. Some just need a coach aka Garrick, some just need an opportunity aka Herbert.
The common denominator here is (a) our "coaching" staff, who have favourites they dont have to coach, follow the so called game plan religiously and say yes, these are rewarded with 1st grade positions each weej wether injured or out of form, (b) a board who thrives on the fact our "lemmings" buy memberships each year (over 20k this year) with no vision of premierships, just make the 8, job done, and (c) a head coach who usurped the previous coach, and whiteanted the Cutters coach because he was more successful ans has more excuses than a federal politician.

The fact is the cream of players, no matter how much we offer them, wont come here, simpkt because of above, and the fact the ultimate goal of a player is that premiership ring.
If you look at the Roosters, players fall over themselves to go there, why? Because they have a great coach and you would say wilk play finals football each year and are always considered favourites for the premiership. Its not about TPA's etc, they just want to be successful.
We are lucky to have the squad we have, but I feel there is great pain approaching at a very rapid rate.

Yes SGI management, coaching staff and recruitment/pathways/retention staff can all share the blame. This only supports my call for a clean out. SGI can do better and need to do better.

The problem here is, who is going to clean them out? Answer noone, they are firmly entrenched wirh heads in the trough. The only course of action, they MAY take is a rapid plummet in memberships, and that is also very unlikely.
As I said prepare for great pain ahead.

The other main problem is and always will be whilst it is a noble trait, we show too much loyalty to our highly accredited long term St George players in recent times creating or making positions available for life after football after retiring who may or may not fall upon tougher times. Other clubs are doing this but are they always the best person for the job?
Rightly or wrongly Young, Hornby, Cooper, Creagh, McGregor, Timmins all have paid roles. (all long serving loyal players in recent times). Have I missed any?. Head not that long serving!

I dare say that if it weren’t for a severe knee injury, Head would’ve been halfback in the 2010 grand final winning side. It’s easy to forget that Wayne Bennett recruited him from the West Tigers 12 months earlier.

The Kerr fascination continues to puzzle me. Yes he had a good first half and bent back the line and he is a big unit who can put on a good hit but he is slow off the ground in both attack and defence. The Warriors were ordinary, at times their defence was nonexistent, yet he could only play what was on the park against him. Slow, ponderous but with some potential, nevertheless CC is probably the only place he will shine.

Offer them a golden handshake plus a bonus that they just can't refuse - starting at the top Johnston - and you may get their attention. Most may leave and at least the new appointment to the top job may just sack them. So Gould in for Johnston and the rest will fall.

Bull Bailey, isnt he on the coaching staff with the CC team?
And of course be prepared for the return if Barrett after his contract expires at Manly.

The fascination with Kerr is tied in with the fact that we (as Saints’ fans) look at Latimore and think “surely, the club can do a lot better?”.

Bull Bailey is an exception for mind. He was not long serving but should of been. Doust felt quilty for letting him go thinking he was dead wood in lieu of Ryles. What a mistake that turned out to be.

Timms is a real worker but lacks impact through the line. He will develop and will make our bench, hopefully, at some stage, but he is no earth shaker. He is just a young, fitter and more mobile version of Latimore at this stage. Sailor is too small for centre or even fb in the nrl. Halfback might be his future. He has skills with the ball and his defence has improved. He might be one to keep patience with. Saab is going to be a first grader but I think 2020 will be his year. Why rush him and destroy his confidence? He has the goods. Forde needs exposure to first grade this year. His pace and game anticipation are good and he possesses a solid work rate. He needs to bulk up but he will be a target for other clubs if we neglect him. Masters? He has skills but lacks judgement and often tries things that are not on. He has the Lafais about him. If he can develop more game smarts he may be worth some of the hype. Overall a good result against a very poor opposition.

Is not Forde another smaller version at this stage of Host?
