The Canada Rugby League Association (CRLA) has confirmed that both the national men’s and women’s teams will tour Serbia later this year.
In what is believed to be a first for international rugby league, the Wolverines and Ravens are scheduled to tour Serbia simultaneously in September.
There will be five games in total, three for the men’s team and two for the women.
The Wolverines will play Bosnia once, followed by two matches against Serbia, while the Ravens will play Serbia twice. There is a slight possibility that one of the Wolverines’ games against Serbia could be replaced by a match against Montenegro, although at this stage that’s not included on the schedule.
The tours are set to take place September 12-22.
Wolverines head coach Ben Fleming says the tours represent a starting point for a change in the CRLA’s mindset on how to move forward and achieve success.
“I think having a tour each year, promoting brand awareness and getting our team out onto the world stage and playing different countries might create a difference that we’re looking for,” he says.
“We need players in the system and sometimes the biggest struggle that we have is getting players to training consistently because the geography of our country is so big. So, going on tours and having them eat, sleep and play together for ten days is something that we want to work towards.”
Fleming says while the simultaneous tours will be history-making for Canada, he sees them more as trying to create a precedent for the game in Canada rather than something for other rugby league nations to necessarily mirror.
“I think there’s no reason for us not to do things together,” adds Fleming.
“I personally think that it’s the way forward if the Wolverines are to continuously go on tours now each year then there’s no reason that the women aren’t invited to that.
“And again, whether we play the same countries or whether visiting countries that have established women’s teams turn up I see it as creating a precedent that we don’t want to shy away from. Now that we are touring together hopefully, we’ll be able to continue touring together.”

Canada opens historic dual tour of Serbia with dual wins

Canada has kicked off its history-making dual tour of Serbia with first-up wins to both the men’s and women’s national teams.

The Wolverines were way too good for a Belgrade/Bosnian select side winning Saturday’s tour opener 78-2.
The earlier game saw the Ravens dominate the Serbian women’s national team 34-6. Both matches were played in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

As nospam18 first reported in June, the Canada Rugby League Association (CRLA) had been in discussions with its Serbian counterpart to set up the historic tour.

It is understood that this is the first time ever that men’s and women’s national rugby league teams from one country have simultaneously toured another country.

“Serbia have a very strong men's competition and growing women's competition and they have been incredibly hospitable in giving us this opportunity,” Wolverines head coach Ben Fleming told RLP at the time the tour was announced
“Not only do we want to really showcase our talent and activate our brand, both countries want to work with the European and international federations and grow the game.

“I also believe if we are active nationally, then it can promote grassroots growth.”

The win by the Ravens improved their short overall international record to 2-3. Prior to Saturday, their only Test victory had been against Papua New Guinea at the 2017 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. This was their first game since the WRLWC.

For the men’s team, it was their first match since beating Chile last November in the third-place game at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup Americas region qualifiers.

Next up, the Wolverines have two Tests against Serbia. The first is scheduled for Wednesday followed by the second on Saturday, while the Ravens will play their second Test match against Serbia also on Saturday.

Canada Too Good for Serbia A

By Brian Lowe, (Photo Credit: Canada Rugby League Association)

A hat-trick by Canadian national team rookie Ethan Langs has helped propel the Wolverines to a dominating 54-6 win against Serbia A Wednesday in Belgrade.
On an overcast afternoon in the Serbian capital, Canada ran in a total of 10 tries as they chalked up their second win from as many games on their history-making dual tour.
The Canadians led 28-0 at halftime as they outplayed their hosts in almost every facet of the game.
According to head coach Ben Fleming, the Wolverines were strong in defence, especially in the first half, against a team that was much more experienced and stronger then the Bosnian side they had faced last Saturday, and the experienced halves of Ash Calvert and Brad Austin had the ball on a string.
In the second half, a tussle ensued with multiple penalties and defensive lapses that allowed Serbia to score their only try of the game.
Despite Serbia’s attacking momentum in the last half of the game, Canada’s relentless defensive pressures prevented the home side from scoring anymore points.
Canadian captain Scyler Dumas was happy with result and is looking ahead, “While I thought the boys really came together in this game, over the next two days we will be continuing to amp for the final game on Saturday.”

Wolverines’ try-scorers included Langs (3), Dumas (2), Charles Curran, Emil Borggren, Brad Austin, Jordon Henry and Ash Calvert.
Austin kicked five goals, while added two more to round out Canada’s scoring.

The Wolverines’ tour wraps up with a match against a stronger Serbian Rugby League team on Saturday in Belgrade.
And the Canadian national women’s team the Ravens also conclude their half of the dual tour with the second international against the Serbian women’s team.

The Eagles today had a serious pre-start check in Group B of the 2021 World Cup Qualifiers against Scotland and Greece. With a great game first of all in the first half, they beat the Canadian national team 36-8. The impression is that this is the best edition of the Eagles under Stuart Wilkinson so far.

Serbia took the lead in the third minute of the match with a try by Predrag Kegluc. In 15 minutes, Milos Zogovic scored an try and then a goal and increased the Eagles' lead to 10-0. In 19 minutes Vladimir Milutinovic scored the third try for Serbia and increased the lead to 14-0. Milos Calic checked into the list of scorers in the 25th minute, followed by Javid Jashari with a successful goal. Serbia leads 20-0. Otherwise, Milutinovic and Calic will continue their careers in France from next week. The Canadians responded with a try by Ethan Lang, his most effective player on this tour, in 29 minutes. The first quality half-time of Serbia was put to an end by Stevan Stevanovic, fifth try for the Eagles. The guests in the second minute score a second try and the scorer is Felix, so the break goes 24-8.

At the start of the second half in 43 minutes, Aleksandar Djordjevic increased the home side lead to 30-8. In 64 minutes Rajko Trifunovic scored the seventh try for the final 36-8.
