Episode 16 of Chasing Kangaroos Pod has some great info straight from the source, Orazio D'arro, president of the FIRL.

To summarise
Italy is starting a national conference league with the aim of 10 Rugby League clubs across the country this year.
One interesting hope is that a Maltese team will be joining this League in the near future.
Italy plan to run into the 2021 World Cup with no less than 8 true domestic players.
They do and will continue to have a healthy working relationship with Union.
They aim to replicate their FIRLA (Australian heritage) setup in both England and France.

Wasn’t there an Italian team competing in elite2(France)?

Yep they got a mention too, Saluzzo North West Roosters.
Apparently they have been an inspiration for other clubs to follow, and may in future push higher up the French ladder (currently div 4).
Lignano Sharks compete in the Balkan Super League too, as of this year.

Most Rugby League in Italy to date seems to have been mostly by Union players and clubs, but now on the back of these 2 pioneering clubs they are quickly working towards a national competition with dedicated Rugby League clubs.

Good stuff.

Saluzzo was the guy in the godfather wasn’t he? The Turk who’s good with a knife

Interesting, I don’t know of many Italian names in the rugby league heartlands. Certainly not like in Sydney. Although I’m not saying there is none either.
I hope they do stick to having 8 born and bred Italians as they’re going to start struggling for eligible Australians in the not so distant future, as those post war migrants are going to be too distant going forward.

For the Maltese team I hope they are the first sports team to be named after a pastry.

Sounds great, but I am sure they made similar promises for '13 and '17 World Cups. The result? Not a single minute of match time for a domestic player, not even Bergamasco.

Shrug. It's on public record, let's see what they do. A legit national championship certainly helps.

While the Italian championship is not very structured, the Italian Federation will set up a new championship.

The teams will be 5 on the starting line for a new Italian Championship which looks more structured and interesting. If initiatives exist such as Saluzzo playing in France and Lignano in Balkan Super League, the idea of the Italian Federation is to create 5 teams in 5 bastions treizistes so that the best local players can compete.

So among these teams we find the best known with Lignano Sharks and Roosters Saluzzo. With these two teams we must add the Parma Cowboys, the Catania Spartans and the Ambrosiana Tigers. For the occasion teams will sport new logos but also new jerseys of the most beautiful effect.

I often wonder if it is a barrier in Italy to be using English team names like Sharks, Cowboys, Roosters etc. It doesn't do much to endear the game to the locals I'm sure.

Let’s hope the home nations and France are stupid enough to give Italy the boot from the 6nations and RL can somehow take advantage of this if it were to happen.
