I mean if you were going to give a $15,000 ring to a woman because it's "women in League" round, probably be an idea to give it to a woman who's done something better than "be a players wife".

Precisely. The stupidity is staggering.

They just had rave reviews of the womens Origin this year... Did they have the first woman ref a FG game this year? Maybe celebrate one of the women administrators who keep the local womens comps running by the sweat of their brows & love of the game...

Someone who has actually DONE something for the game other than... be a WAG? Tolerate Cameron Smith?

Or you know.. announce they were planning womens league like the wafl, or a state comp with ACT back in it... or funding for womens test tours... a girls academy... something of substance for women in league to kick on with, instead of the ultimate empty gesture.

I thought it was nice during Women in League round that a woman was recognised

But it was given to her weeks ago at Cam's 400th game dinner, nothing to do with WiL round. If it were meant to be a recognition you gotta wonder why it didn't get a mention anywhere until a small, negative article in the DT.

You'd do more good giving 1500 volunteering RL women a $100 gift card than a diamond ring to the wife of a millionaire.

That’s the kind of maths that only cam smith himself can make work. Write off $150,000 for $15,000:flushed:

The poor Smiths didn’t fleece enough cash from the public from Cam’s testimonial, so the NRL decided to reward them for being the real Aussie battlers that they are.

Pretty incredible that the wife of the player who has earned the most amount of money from rugby league in it’s history is given an extravagant gift from the governing body.

I don’t begrudge him for making the cash btw

This story is a month old and it just so happens to get a run now. Must have been keeping it as a back up in case the usual yearly complaints in the media about Storm’s playing style didn’t get enough traction.

The point I'm angry about and I'm sure many people are - there are so many places that are struggling with footy at the moment, poor numbers, poor facilities, grounds that need renovating, in debt etc. why the f**k should any player, no matter how many games they have played, get 'gifts' like a free expensive dinner, a crystal football, a mural and a $15k ring for his wife? How does the NRL sit there and think 'hmm we've got this money just lying around, better spend it on a player who already earns over a million dollars a season and got a testimonial match last year.' On top of this, why haven't they done this for any other records? Plus, it's unfair to the clubs as it essentially gives Melbourne extra $$ on top of their salary cap.

Also, when the NRL said the reason Barb deserved the ring was recognising the sacrifices she made for Cameron's career - do other players' partners not do the same? I'd say there'd be a fair lot of partners of minimum wage players doing a lot more work and making a lot more sacrifices than the millionaire's wife. Apparently the recognisation they get is Cam's wife getting a ring.

Cameron Smith’s wife gifted diamond ring but NRL makes ‘no apologies’
The NRL makes “no apologies” for gifting Cameron Smith’s wife Barbara an expensive ring to celebrate her husband’s 400th game.

The NRL makes “no apologies” for gifting Cameron Smith’s wife Barbara an expensive ring to celebrate her husband’s 400th game.

The Daily Telegraph revealed NRL boss Todd Greenberg presented Barbara with the diamond ring at a dinner held in Smith’s honour in the week leading up to his milestone match last month.

But the present was not included on the official register of gifts paid for by the governing body, which did include a crystal football and a painted mural in Melbourne to mark Smith’s occasion. It was reportedly valued at $15,000.

The Telegraph says the ARL Commission also did not sign off on the present to Barbara.

Greenberg defended the gift when contacted by the Telegraph.

“Our biggest stars wouldn’t be where they are today without the women in their lives,’’ Greenberg said.

“We make no apologies for honouring the amazing role Barb has played and the sacrifices she has made throughout Cameron’s career.

“His feat made history and may never be done again. It was right to acknowledge the achievement in the way we did.”

Melbourne boss Dave Donaghy denied knowing about the diamond ring before it was presented by Greenberg.

“We had no idea it was coming,” Donaghy said. “It was a gift from the NRL. We gave her a bunch of flowers.”

An NRL spokesman also defended the unusual decision to give a player’s wife an expensive gift.

“It is a gift from the NRL,” the spokesman said.

“No different to gifts for 300 games, premiership rings or players who are paid out of the NRL marketing fund to promote events.”

In contrast, the celebration of James Graham’s 400th rugby league game last week was rather tame.
