I like the sound of O'brien

If he is a specialist attacking coach, working with storm and roosters and we keep Woolfe as defence coach, we should be sweet

I'll stand by the Flanagan call. Not a clean skin, sure, not an overly popular personality, sure, has baggage, sure, but he's ultimately a quality coach who proved he can recruit wall, produce players and take a team to a premiership.

O'Brien is a fantastic prospect.

Toovey I'm concern might be the coaching version of Storm players. Was a great coach for Manly simply because he was Manly through and through. Outside? I've got my concerns he might not deliver.

Wouldn't mind giving Kristian Woolf a shot either. Defensive mind and our defense has looked great a number of times this season.

O'Brien would be my first choice. Ryles and Fitzgibbon both have raps on them but I don't know enough about them as coaches. Not sure what to think about Woolf, our defence has been great at times but abysmal at others.

Wouldn't be surprised if Wests want an experienced coach though i.e Toovey.

That is a super underwhelming list.
Pretty much the only reason I have an ounce of surprise that we're letting Brown go. O'Brien seems like a good candidate. A punt on some fresh blood with good pedigree sounds like a decent idea in theory... at least when compared to the list of underperformers/cheats/etc.

Here is my response to that list:

Kevin Walters - LOL I'd rather have a brown potato in the coaching box.

Tim Sheens - I don't want Ponga at halfback and Hymel Hunt at dummy half.

Craig Fitzgibbon - wouldn't say no. Comes from a good system.

Trent Barrett - f*** off. No seriously f*** off.

Anthony Griffin - a more boring version of Bennett. Winning record glosses over the fact he can't come up with attacking plans to save his life. He would ruin Pearce and Ponga. Pass.

Steve Price - I'll just leave this picture here:

Shaun Wane - who? This guy?...

But seriously. I wouldn't be against him coming, but to me he's a bit of a non-entity.

Kristian Woolf - I would support his ascension as he has done a lot of good things with our defence, for the most part. But I would prefer if he stayed as our defensive coach if we went with O'Brien.

Garth Brennan - When you're alone and life is getting you lonely you can always go ACH DOONTOON! Next...

Adam O'Brien - based on the opinions of you lot here probably my 2nd preference for coach. Would take.

Jason Ryles - in the same bucket as Fitzgibbon, Woolf and O'Brien. Unproven but comes from a good system. At least they can't suspend him up in the coaching box. Wouldn't be against him coming here.

Shane Flanagan - my #1 pick. He's a prick but he's a successful prick. He won Cronulla a premiership ffs. Would bring in the discipline and desire for success that is needed for us to go to the next level. As long as he's purely focused on the coaching and isn't put in charge of any peptide program or salary cap management, he's our man.

So if I were to rank my top 5 picks it would go something like this:

1. Flanagan
2. O'Brien
3. Woolf
4. Fitzgibbon
5. Ryles

Shaun Wane would be fantastic. More than proven record in Super League and as passionate as anyone we could get. He would ‘fit’ Newcastle.

No thanks to Griffin, Taylor or Barrett, I'm also iffy on Brennan, and to the nuffies on social media that want Hagan back, we want less spoons not more.

Not sure if I'd be willing to punt on Brennan or not. He's probably better than his stint at the Titans suggested.

Would not count out Woolfe either. Not sure about his coaching ability but he has convinced some pretty good players to give up $100k playing Origin/Aus to get $1000 playing for Tonga.
