What a Bullshit article by Hooper. Adam O'Brien leaving to take a head coaching role wouldn't make Politis livid. There is a get out clause in there for a reason and Politis knew if a position came up which in the NRL it is bound to, he may go.

I would think this is the perfect timing for O'Brien. Roosters on the way towards another premiership, Brown is coaching out the season so not like O'Brien has to leave them in the lurch on their run to the finals. Can take up his post at the end of the year, thank Politis for his time and head off.

Paul Kent mentioned on 360 that he thinks the Knights are interested in bringing in Tim Sheens in some sort of coaching consultancy role if they go for a rookie coach like O’Brien or Ryles.

Recruited Kurn Mann...

... to play hooker... and people bought it.

Not having a 9 and 6 has been a major flaw in the recruitment process.

For whatever reason/s, and there have been quite a few thrown around, we have failed to address the spine issue the past 4 years.

The new coach needs to find a 6 to compliment the million dollar half. One with a decent kicking and passing game would be a great start.

Hopefully he can take Brailey to the next level and also get him to further develop his kicking game and give the side another point of attack.

Oh, and a decent young centre on the cusp of rep footy to give us some strike in our backline...

We have a 6. We keep moving him around and won’t give him a chance to kill it.

Big mistake.

I can't imagine O'Brien, Ryles or Fitzgibbon serving their apprenticeship, ready to take a head coach NRL role and the club hires a baby sitter to second guess them and speak to the boss about how they are going etc.

Could only imagine that ending in disaster.

9 saying that Fitzgibbon has ruled himself out.
Pearce reckons his Mrs thinks she knows enough to get the job.
Apology for just a Facebook link.

Who else reckons Whoosh might really be Pearce's Mrs?

Yep especially not from someone like Sheens. Sheens is the same guy who undermined his CEO and got him sacked for simply wanting to hold Sheens accountable. I feel like Sheens is the type of guy who'll throw a rookie coach under the bus to protect his own reputation. I wouldn't mind the idea of Brennan as an assistant, someone who has a connection to the club, doesn't really have a reputation to protect and knows the expectations and potential downfalls for a rookie coach

What's Joey up to? He never planning on becoming a coach? Would be good to have him and Bedsy assistant coaches to O'Brian.

He's knocked back the idea many times. He doesn't want the pressure.
I reckon with his knowledge of the game Joey should be on an advisory panel re the coach selection.

Something odd about Ponga in all his interviews, he sounds very aloof.

We recruit what we can for the money we have until we build the team to win. Thats how it works. We now have Brailey who should have a big future in the game. As for Watson ? He's no spine player but we arguably have one of the best young utilities in the game.

and is apparently great with bringing on young players.

As I said, going into the fifth year since the rebuild started and we now have 3 out of 4 spine players signed - one yet to play a game for the club.

Still no 5/8 and it is glaringly obvious the million dollar half is not the type of player to do it all himself. I think most people would have been acutely aware of that before he signed here.

So, as it stands, we got the recruitment and retention about 50% right after 4 years when looking at the spine. Or we got it 100% right but the players didn't buy in or the coaching of those players was not good enough. In this forum, it depends upon the 'narrative' you follow as to wich one of these points you support.

Apparently we were going to fluff our way through 2020 without a decent 6 or a 6 the coach likes enough to play for more than 3 or 4 games in a row.

So it may have taken Browny 6 yrs to find a spine.

That is not how it works if you want to win at least half your games in a season, each season after 6 seasons. Not the greatest target to aim for either. That is the lower side of some success.

If his plan was to take 6 or more years to find, purchase or develop the 4 most important positions in the team then he was definitely on track and hard done by. But it is clear Wests didn't want that time frame and possibly started doubting where the side was heading, in large part to the spine issues imo.

We had plenty of cash to target a complete spine but put the eggs in the wrong basket re the 9 and the 6. Watson can't pass the footy at all when in motion and doesn't have a kicking game so no chance of supporting the 7.

We got the recruitment and retention wrong there and that went a fair way to helping Brown lose his job.

He has definitely left the place in a much better position than he walked into and fingers crossed the jnrs in the system filter through to first grade and actually make quality NRL players. He has been part of their development and seeing them succeed will add to his legacy.

Couple of things here ...

1 - you keep saying million dollar half in a very snide manner. Would you prefer we didn't have Pearce than paying him the money we are? I've been more critical of him than most this year, but even I would hate to think where we'd be without him.

2 - there weren't many (or any) people that weren't keen to give Watson a go at being a running 5/8th. Actually there was nothing but excitement for his signing tbh. I can see why Brown thought it was a good idea. It seemed like a great fit.

3 - Brown couldn't find a hooker, that much is true and is a really valid criticism of his recruitment. Most of our bad recruitment decisions revolve around this position. Having said that - Brailey is a good pickup.
