One excuse Mary will say is that he had no JDB which is 1 less Origin player but he has Norman who became an Origin player so his quota of Origin players from last year to this year is the same. Geez I hope Gould can see through these bull$hit excuses. If anything Mary had an Origin half in the squad at all times whether it be Norman or Hunt but mostly they were both in the squad bar the 1 game due to Origin. How many other teams can boast to have an Origin half in their squad all year? That in itself is proof how bad he is.

Notice that the guys coming to his defence are forwards, Aitken and Lafai of course and no halves? I have yet to see Norman or Hunt back Mary. If anything Hunt is copping the blame for Mary's poor coaching and not Mary.
Mary will probably take credit for "moulding Norman into an outstanding State of Origin player under his tutelage"

The Mole: Phil Gould in secret talks with St George Illawarra Dragons

The Dragons are closing in on a deal to make two-time premiership-winning coach Phil Gould their saviour for 2020 and beyond.

Wide World of Sports can reveal that Gould has been involved in secret talks with Dragons chief executive Brian Johnston and coach Paul McGregor after the Big Red V's season from hell.

The former Blues State of Origin coach is expected to head up the Dragons' end of season review to 'test the waters'.

There has also been a more permanent role discussed, with the possibility that he will take a General Manager of Football role next season, similar to the one he held at Penrith for the best part of a decade.

Gould parted company with the Panthers in April but is still contracted to the club until next month.

McGregor is under massive pressure at the Dragons, with the club winning just seven of 23 games to date and set to finish in second last spot on the ladder.

There has been an outcry from fans, with many demanding change. Bringing Gould in to help the embattled coach would be a shrewd move by the club.

The Dragons have long been criticised for handing 'jobs for the boys' to former players.

Gould is stepping into very deep and dangerous waters if he thinks he can resolve the crisis without sacking Mary within 2 minutes of his arrival.

This proposed consultancy, it wreaks of utter contempt of hard core fans by a board under seige.

It will ruin Gus’s already tenuous career. His media comments are cliche and boring and no fan takes him seriously anymore. Even the panthers got rid of him. They aren’t exactly blue chip management. They wasted millions on a flog of a coach.

They want to say it’s Gus”s decision that Mary stays on at least for 6-9 games next year.

This is a smoke and mirrors distraction designed to appease the masses. It’s the same thing as sacking the assistants.

No one bought that, no one is buying this.

If this is leadership....ffs....

Only repeating what has been said on countless occasions over the last 1/2 decade - yes that’s correct 1/2 a bluudy decade and that is he must go . The J.V. has no choice, no option open to them any longer than to terminate his contract at the completion of this weekends game .

Surely the sponsors must be unhappy with the current situation with the Dragons - 15th position. It has been a long hard year but I wonder how those sponsors feel at s point in time knowing that there companies will not be up there on the big stage come semi final time ? A lot of good money down the drain is the way that I would perceive it .

There is only one solution for a permanent fix to this 1/2decade crisis and that is to search for another individual who could take the Dragons to the very top of the NRL tree ,
not just some ‘ hick ‘ to fill the role , but someone who will restore pride back into the Big Red V . :innocent:
It would be catastrophic to get Gould on board because it would only give Mary another let out and excuse.

The Mary era needs to be finalised, otherwise the darkness will continue.

Someone in charge has to front up to a press conference, be remorseful and all that bullshit and say that the club is

“Going in a different direction for 2020 and beyond.”

Or get Gus in to deliver the bad news and then sack him.

The only clear choice, the best coach in terms of wins, brutality and firepower is Griffin with his own staff.

There will be no consulting with the board on selections and no compromises under Griffin. Ask Moylan. His career has been a bit of a circus at the sharks.

IMHO Latrell will be on the market soon.

Because you're obviously not a Dragons supporter. Do you feel sorry for us?

That’s right, I’m not a dragons supporter.

Just partaking in the freedom of the forum.

And joining in the chorus of frustration as I can readily understand it.

Mary is incompetent and cannot accept failure, but his cohort and supporters in power are sneaky, underhanded and vile. They lie, spin, won’t tolerate free speech and treat their fans like morons.

Most nrl fans feel sgi has turned into a basket case.

But no ones critical of your actual fans. You are the victims. People often help victims.

The whole Sack Mary experience has taught the entire game a lot about abuse of power and fake news media. We can learn from these lessons so this shiz doesn’t play out on us.

Gould "So what do you think the problem is Mary?"

McGregor "Look Gus it's nothing a coat of paint can't fix, and you know, I'm the coach, so I've got to take responsibility for that. I'll get started next week."

Johnston " That sounds like a great idea Mary! Don't you think Gus? Let's give it another shot eh."

Review ends.

Dragons after horror 2019 season under Paul McGregor

After an embarrassing 2019 season, the St George Illawarra Dragons have turned to legendary coach Phil 'Gus' Gould to potentially save the club as the pressure mounts on coach Paul McGregor.

As first reported by WWOS' The Mole, Gould left the Penrith Panthers earlier this season but is still contracted to the club until next month - but will head up the Dragons internal review after this weekend's clash with the Gold Coast Titans.

Gus had been in secret talks with Saints' CEO Brian Johnston and McGregor after a diabolical season and the inclusion of him in the review is to potentially 'test the waters' for a permanent role.

The club confirmed the news about Gould in a statement on their website on Friday from Johnston.

"Nobody at the club is happy with how the Dragons have performed and that's extended to all our stakeholders including members and supporters," Johnston said.

"We are committed to reviewing all aspects of our football department to ensure improvement in 2020."

The 61-year old has already discussed with the club about becoming the General Manager of Football - the same role he held at Penrith.

But according to Brent Read, Mary is safe for now - unless the Dragons lose to the Titans in Round 25.

Red V fans have been desperate for change at the club in recent months (and years) and McGregor should be in serious jeopardy of losing his job - but that appears unlikely.

In six years at the helm, Mary has led the Dragons to the finals just twice with their highest finish being 7th, and in 2019 has been at the forefront of the highly-touted side now about to finish in 15th place.

Att Paul McGregor, #redv fans have lost all faith in you. We will walk away & membership will drop in numbers as long as you are coach. Do the honorable thing and walk away. #Time4Change #StepDownMcGregor #FailMary #MaryOut #Redv #JohnstonOut

hey @LaraPitt_ #Dragons need to pay out #FailMary NOW #stgeorge & #wintv have plenty $$ go get a real coach & start planning for 2020 & beyond. The current imposter #FailMary has done enough damage to this great brand it’s literally on life support. #REDV

If is my firm belief that Brian Johnstone’s legacy at St George will be forever tarnished by his inaction on & approval of McGregor continuing as Dragons coach into 2020. He is Chairman & said in a recent interview, he has the say in who coaches the club moving forward #shameonu

Gus is one of the smartest men in rugby league - and could be exactly what the Dragons need to return to their former glory.

Why Gus????

Brian is a nice bloke who doesn't have the heart to sack Mary.

Gus comes in - makes a dollar - sacks Mary - recommends the next coaching staff and makes another dollar.

One thing for absolute certain - if Gus is conducting the review - Grffin will not get the coaching job....................

Let the blood flow. McGregor... #1(just for letting Latimore sit on our bench all year) & being to stupid, to not give L. Timm a go.
All coaching staff.
#2 players, Lafai,
Aiken,
This coach & his staff, are a laughing stock.
It's has now become an embarrassment, you say......
I'm a Dragons supporter. :sob:

So Phil Gould has been brought in to save McGregor from the sack after 6 years of absolute failure ? The same Phil Gould that strangely sacked Anthony griffin who had Penrith travelling first and have never recovered since , Gould is McGregors mate and his going to support him and turn a blind eye to the fact his a clueless coach and isn’t a mentor for players to go to that next level he wil turn blame elsewhere example jack debelin while ignoring the failures of the five previous years
