Expansion League

In USA in 1960's a number of potential bids were blocked from joining NFL who had slow approach to expansion. These bids joined forces & formed American Football League which would eventually merge with NFL. Right now there are a host of bidders for inclusion to NRL who have been left waiting. Could they form their own league & look to undercut NRL on broadcasting rights? CBS want sports for ten. League would represent some untapped markets;
Perth
Adelaide
Melbourne - western fc stadium
Wellington
Central Coast
Western Corridor
Redcliffe
Central Qld
PNG

Both CBS & nine want NRL - one must miss out. Perth & Adelaide markets without teams. Big money backers behind bids. Same scenario as American Football League. Completely hypothetical.

Would need around $300mill a year to be a serious Comp. Even twiggy couldn’t afford that lol

What I could definately see is a fully-professional and fully televised national second division with no P&R. A mixture of traditional clubs and expansion hopefuls - no NRL affiliations (to enter you must cut ties with NRL clubs) and no reserve teams. All clubs wanting to make the NRL must enter a team in this league first and then apply. The NRL can then plan future expansion and their professional footprint through both professional leagues, done properly, underperforming NRL clubs can be removed and placed in this league which avoids relocating them or them dying altogether.

Northern Pride (Cairns)
Central QLD (Rockhampton)
Redcliffe Dolphins
North Brisbane Devils
Souths Logan Magpies
Wynnum Manly Seagulls
Ipswich Jets
Burleigh Bears
Wyong Roos
North Sydney Bears
Newtown Jets
WA Pirates
PNG Hunters
Fiji Somethings

Nswrl and Qrl would never allow it. It would relegate them to third division and they won’t like that lol.

Hard to see it happening without NSW/QRL support, but perhaps as a point of difference to the NRL, they could play some (but not all) games on Monday-Thursday nights each round with KO at 6:30/7pm
