urkey will face Ukraine this Saturday (31 August) at the Beylerbeyi Stadium, Istanbul to determine the eighth nation to play in the 2020 U19s European Championship (kick off 3pm).

The winners will head to Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy to join the hosts, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Serbia and Ireland from 3–13 September next year.

Turkey RLA have run training camps in Eskisehir, Ankara and Istanbul in preparation.

“The U19 European Championship is a big stage for us and qualification for the main event would mean a huge step,” said their U19 head coach, Kemal Ege Gurkan.

“Whatever the result, we aim to create a team that is embraced. This is likely to be a generation that will represent Turkey at the higher stages of international rugby league in senior level and they need to start their stories by winning hearts in this campaign.”

Rugby League in Turkey has continued to grow with more than 15 men’s and women’s teams competing, encompassing around four hundred senior players and their leading side, Kadikoy Bullls, reaching the semi finals of the Balkan Super League.

“We are actively encouraging more players especially youngsters aged between 16-19, who are making their first steps in the sport,” added Gurkan.

Team Manager Oytun Colok noted: “Turkey is a country with a young population. We prepare our young players for international matches mentally, technically and physically and are creating a genuine brotherhood.

Their selected squad represents ten domestic clubs.

Their Ukrainian counterparts have played two games in Serbia as part of their build up, defeating Serbia U19s ‘A’ 44-0 and the full Serbian U19s side, 32-10, both games at the SC Inge stadium in Belgrade.

Artur Martyrosian, Ukraine Federation of Rugby League president, commented: “One of the general aims of our Federation is to grow the sport to the highest level, so the participation of our senior and junior national teams at European Championships is a very important pointer. We really want to take a part in the full U19s European Championship next year.”

Lviv contribute seven players to the Ukrainian squad, which is made up of players from six domestic clubs.

Brazil Rugby League has launched the TOP1 which is the Brazilian Rugby League Championship, the highest level of competition in the country.

The 2019 Championship will be deliberately compact in order to give new athletes the best opportunity to experience the fun and dynamism of rugby league.

TOP1 is, despite the experimental nature a very serious competition and only players who compete in the competition will be considered for selection to the national squads. The championship will run alongside coaching clinics which will be delivered by men’s national coach, Manu Falaalo and Head of Rugby, Paul Grady. The clinics will be educational and also a chance for the coaches to monitor and assess the players.

There will also be a series of courses for match officials and coaches all designed to create an environment where everyone is developing their skill and learning about rugby league.

The Championship will feature two groups and will be played over three weeks starting on November 23rd, 2019.

Group A Group B

Bandeirantes Devils (Sao Paulo) All Golds (Rio de Janeiro)
Urutau Rugby (Sao Jose dos Pinhais/Parana) Rio de Janeiro Warriors (Rio de Janeiro)
Maringa Hawks (Maringa / Parana) Sao Lourenco Roosters (Sao Lourenco / Minas Gerais)

South Africa to Host 2020 MEA Championships
28 OCT 2019

South Africa have won the bid to host the men’s 2020 Middle East and Africa Championship, which will take place in Pretoria next October.

The 2019 version was recently held in Lagos, Nigeria and also involved Cameroon, Ghana and Morocco - the hosts taking the title after defeating Morocco in the final.

South Africa Rugby League Sporting Association chief executive officer, Frans Parsons, commented: “Players, officials and fans can look forward to a great experience here. The partnership between our federation and the University of Pretoria means everything can be hosted on one site in a world-class facility. The Hatfield sports campus has held many international events and teams in a variety of sports, so to add rugby league to that list is huge feather in our cap.”

Parsons continued: “It has come at exactly the right time as the game is growing here. Hosting and taking part in an international tournament will be a huge boost to everyone involved in the sport. If the recent competition is anything to go by, we will have some fantastic games and take the participating nations out into the surrounding schools and clubs to ensure we continue to support our communities.”

RLEF general manager Chris Thair, whose board evaluated a number of proposals, said: “The South African bid was very strong and I know from personal experience that it is a wonderful place to go and play rugby league. The MEA Championship is still in its early stages of development, however, with the facilities, partners and people involved in South Africa, I know the tournament will build upon that held in Nigeria and help everyone to grow.”

Thair added: “Following the 2020 Championship, the tournament will move to a two year cycle and fall into line with similar federation competitions in Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe. The Middle East and Africa region is a very exciting growth area for the whole sport. I’m looking forward to seeing this tournament expand and what South Africa will offer. International rugby league is developing well with clear plans for the future.”

SARLSA will host the MEA Championship at the renowned TuksSports Campus, LC de Villiers Sports Ground at the University of Pretoria. All players and officials will be able to enjoy top class accommodation and training facilities on offer at the TUKS High Performance Centre.

South Africa will be joined by three other nations, one of whom will be current defending champions Nigeria, with the others to be announced early next year.
