Looks like Roberts played for Macksville this year and turned 18 this year.

He obviously has some ability by making the 18’s country side, however it appears he played 18’s all year without a single first grade appearance for the top side (or reserve grade).

While there could be some reasons behind not playing first grade, however it’s probably a good sign he just isn’t good enough to make it in the nrl.

For example French was playing country first grade at 17 and pretty much every Steelers SG ball player that goes back to country footy after the junior reps season is finished play - some play a couple of 1st grade games while others are regulars.

I suspect we were ok with him leaving.

I guess what's point on persisting with halves. Dylans 19 and Moses 25.
Could be our halves pairing for 7yrs.

Yeah, more so we really don’t need to spend to much / offer a top 30 spot unless the half (or any future junior half ) is a “gun”. Still good to have a promising junior half in the squad but we can be fairly selective.

There's been a lot of money thrown at our juniors recently, Etu Lui and William Kei took bigger deals at Wests Tigers and Manly and Bulldogs are all over our young players.

After some lean years there are a lot of good prospects coming through, the key now is to make sure we sign the best ones. The Riff and Eels are prime targets from other Sydney based clubs, as our HOF said, they fish where the numbers and best competitions are.

Yeh, to put this in perspective, I played against Macksville U18 for a year. And I was never, ever, ever, anything of a footballer.

Just to add,he will be 19 and not ready for Flegg level given his limited level of competition. Was offered a contract, but Is a tweener who plays lock but physically better suited to hooker and would need to undertake a bit of work.

Apparently a really good person and the club thought it OK for his progress if they found an opportunity at another club . The raids on our better juniors remains an issue which the club is aware of, and taking steps to retain as many as feasible.

Its a hard one. Cant keep them all. But as you mentioned our clubs juniors are being targeted heavily.
Allot of rumours already circling, Will know in coming weeks who we retained and who we have lost.!

The off season continues to throw up curve balls, appears we have lost 3 Flegg halves and a number of other players have signed elsewhere.

New recruits will obviously appear, but Tigers and Dogs have feasted themselves the past few months. Happy to be proved incorrect, reminds pretty much of the period when DA was HOF and there was little focus on those under the NRL. ONeil is pretty much a process person and may be slower to work at junior level than when more autonomy was available to age player specialists.

As we move forward will be of interest to see what recruitment occurs for the reserve grade side as little is known at the moment regards to players.
