The Bati head into this Saturday's Oceania Cup Test against the Kumuls brimming with confidence after a stunning demolition of Samoa in Auckland last weekend.

This will be the Kumuls' first Test since a mid-year loss to Samoa, though they had some bright moments in the recent World Cup 9s with a convincing win over USA and a one-point loss to the Kiwis.

They are unfortunately understrength with an already-limited number of NRL players from which to choose trimmed further with skipper James Segeyaro currently fighting a provisional ASADA ban and injury to Kurt Baptiste. The likes of Justin Olam, Rhyse Martin, Kyle Laybutt and Watson Boas will be crucial to the team's hopes.

Key match-up
Viliame Kikau v Rhyse Martin. Kikau was a force of nature against Toa Samoa, winding up on that left edge, crashing over for two tries and offloading at will. Martin is arguably the best-credentialled player available to PNG along with Storm centre Justin Olam and will have a huge task in the pack regardless of where he plays but particularly if he lines up as expected on the right edge marking Kikau. A rugged ball runner with a big motor, he will need to provide plenty of starch against an energetic Bati pack.

For Fiji to win
Bottle whatever they had last week and pull it out again. Consistency hasn't historically been Fiji's greatest asset at the top level, with massive win over minnows sprinkled with big losses to higher-ranked nations as well as the odd impressive upset. They look near as strong as they ever have, particularly with Sivo's return from a one-game suspension. Replicate the energy and enthusiasm they ambushed Samoa with and the battle is half-won already.

For PNG to win
It's about belief as Fiji will have a stronger team on paper. The Kumuls have downed the Bati in their previous two meetings, in 2018 and 2016. The teams are very different this time around but if a Kumuls side renowned for ferocious carries and rugged defensive hits can generate some early momentum – like Fiji did to Samoa last week – anything is possible.

Stat Attack
Fiji's last-up 44-18 win over Samoa was their biggest victory in a game against a tier-one nation or Pasifika nation other than Cook Islands. Following on from the mid-year trouncing of Lebanon they have now won their past two Tests by a combined 102-32.

And another thing…
Rabbitohs fullback Alex Johnston, who played one Test for the Kangaroos in 2015 and has twice represented the Indigenous All Stars, is in line to make his Kumuls debut after electing to honour his grandmother's Papua New Guinean heritage in what will be his second Test and first in four years.

Only four points separated New Zealand and Great Britain last weekend and we're set for another gripping clash in Christchurch on Saturday to conclude the two-Test series.

After a heavy loss to Australia, the Kiwis scored a gritty 12-8 win over the Lions. The game's only three tries came in the second half.

Great Britain are winless on their first southern hemisphere tour in 12 years – having also been beaten by Tonga – and will be desperate to get on the board.

Key match-up
Dynamic fullbacks Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jonny Lomax led the way for their nations in the first Test. Tuivasa-Sheck contributed a match-high 234 metres, a line break and a try assist to propel New Zealand home. Meanwhile, Super League star Lomax topped the metres chart for Great Britain (196) and had a line break assist. A moment of magic from either No.1 could be the difference.

For New Zealand to win
The Kiwis improved on their effort against Australia but they'll be focused on cutting down the errors, having made 10 to Great Britain's six last start. It will also be integral for the returning Shaun Johnson to gain some early confidence, especially with his kicking game. If he's on song, the Kiwis will be hard to stop.

For Great Britain to win
Last week's completion rate of 87% is impressive on paper but the Lions might be better served throwing caution to the wind against the Kiwis. Great Britain have no shortage of attacking talent, so scoring just two tries in two matches on tour suggests they've been too conservative. Wayne Bennett's troops produced eight offloads compared to New Zealand's 13 in the opening match and more second-phase play could be what's needed to break up the black wall.

Stat Attack
Great Britain back-rower John Bateman has been tireless across two 80-minute performances, making a combined 78 tackles and 296 metres. Kodi Nikorima was enormous for New Zealand on Test return last Saturday, making 53 tackles at hooker after being brought into the starting side for Brandon Smith.

Tyrell Sloane is an interesting selection for the 'future' Blues squad. Played wing in SG Ball this year and played wing in the Steelers GF win. Maybe @George Dragon can spread some more light on him.
Tyrell is a bit of a freak player like Bud
He is tall skinny and a fullback.
He played wing this year still only 17
So will be the SG FB next season
I'll see if I have some footage of hm.

The Indigenous v Maori All Stars fixture returns in 2020, and four Dragons players need your vote to secure selection for the prestigious fixture.

Dragons utility Tristan Sailor, outside back Jonus Pearson and front-rower Josh Kerr are eligible for the Indigenous All Stars, while Red V 2020 recruit Issac Luke can be picked for the Maori All Stars team.

Gold Coast's Cbus Super Stadium will host the fixture on Saturday, February 22.

Voting is now open for fans to have their say on who should feature in the men's fixture, with Indigenous coach Laurie Daley and Maori coach David Kidwell to have final say in the make-up of the sides.

"This is a great way for fans to have input into the selection of the All Stars teams," NRL Indigenous strategy senior manager Mark Deweerd said.

"It's a unique opportunity they don't get at any other time of the year and allows them to influence the way coaches think and the type of football they'd like to see played.

"Fans' preferred teams will be provided to both coaches who will use that to come up with the final squads of 20 based on the balance of players across the various positions."

Two Dragons named in Queensland Maroons 2020 squad

Kevin Walters has made a change to Queensland's preparations for the 2020 State of Origin series, desperate to avoid a third straight defeat by naming a full-strength squad for a pre-season training camp in February.

Walters has broken his usual trend of naming only an emerging players' camp for the summer, instead naming every Origin representative who took part in the 2019 campaign to join a host of rising hopefuls pushing for a debut next year.

The exits of Will Chambers (Japanese rugby) and Matt Gillett (retirement) leaves a further hole in the Maroons' experience factor, which has significantly dropped over the past three years.

Prior to the 2019 campaign, Queensland had lost 253 games of Origin experience following the retirements of Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Greg Inglis, Darius Boyd, Sam Thaiday and Nate Myles.

"We want the 2020 Origin squad to spend as much time together to build their relationships off the field as well in their specific positions," Walters said of the camp.

"It is also a wonderful opportunity for those who haven't experienced State of Origin football to mix in and spend time with current team members.

"There has always been a strong bond and mateship between Queensland players and we will continue to drive that message over the two-day camp."

Returning Maroons star Valentine Holmes is included in the group with the Cowboys recruit set to push for a spot in the backs alongside the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Corey Oates and Dane Gagai.

Parramatta hooker Reed Mahoney, Raiders firebrand Corey Horsburgh and Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo are among the fresh faces vying for a call-up next season.

Of the squad chosen, 10 are yet to make their Origin debut.

The Maroons will assemble in Brisbane on February 1 for a two-day camp after NSW held their own early preparations for the series last week.

Why do they need a 2 day camp right in the midst of all clubs pre-season training. Dont they have a camp prior to Game 1 etc. Origin stuff outside the actual 3 games is overdone, overanalysedand their coaches are just bored waiting for it to come around.
Let alone having emerging camps for kids that have not hardly played 1st grade just because they think a player could get there one day. Managers are awake to this and love the $$$ market value going becuase of it
Last post a few weeks. Enjoy the break from me...all.

Four Dragons selected for Indigenous All Stars
Author

Marquee South Sydney recruit Latrell Mitchell will start at fullback for the Indigenous All Stars but Cody Walker and Andrew Fifita are in doubt with injuries.

Indigenous coach Laurie Daley has named an explosive squad to face the Maori side at Cbus Super Stadium on February 22.

Mitchell will don the No.1 jersey that he wants to make his own at the Rabbitohs this year, though Daley doesn't intend to keep him in the custodian's role for the duration.

"I expect him to probably have a break at some stage given the intensity and the pace of the game. It usually finds the blokes out early," Daley told NRL.com.

"And we like to move [players] around and give them an opportunity."

Team announcement: Indigenous All Stars v Maori

The fitness of incumbent captain Walker and leading prop Fifita isn't as clear, as the duo push to overcome injuries.

Fifita had his knee cleaned out before Christmas while Walker is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

Daley said a decision on Walker and Fifita's availability will be made by their respective club doctors.

If fit, Walker is likely to play halfback alongside Jack Wighton at five-eighth. Tyrone Roberts, last year's Man of the Match in a 34-14 win, is a readymade No.7 replacement.

Broncos centre Jack Bird was initially picked but withdrew from the squad as he manages his comeback from an ACL injury. He was replaced by Warriors forward Josh Curran.

Kotoni Staggs was unavailable for selection due to a toe issue.

The Indigenous backline is once again stacked with speed and power.

Bolstered by Mitchell at the back, A-list wingers Josh Addo-Carr and Blake Ferguson and centres James Roberts and Jesse Ramien also provide serious strike.

Ryan James will make his return from an ACL injury and Daley is hoping the big man can crank out decent minutes with the team a touch light on forwards.

"I think he should be right," Daley said of James.

"We've got Josh Kerr, he played a bit last year which was good. Young Josh Curran gives us a bit of size. We've got a few players there that will probably have to play a bit longer than they do at their clubs.

"Some of the bigger outside backs might have to spend some time in the forwards."

David Fifita, Wade Graham, Adam Elliott and Joel Thompson are also among a mobile pack. Titans veteran Nathan Peats will line up at hooker.

As for the bench, Daley expects to inject Alex Johnston out wide and is planning to use Connor Watson in the middle, either at dummy-half or lock.

Daley acknowledged his troops are in for a tough match against the Maoris.

"They've got a very strong forward pack. And then you throw in Kalyn [Ponga] and Dylan Walker, so they've got some strike. Bailey Simonsson's a really good player," he said.

all-stars_team-list_indigenous_20200128-1.jpg

Meanwhile, internationals Tallisha Harden and Shakiah Tungai will lead the charge for Ben Jeffries' Indigenous Women's All Stars in their showdown with the Maori Women's All Stars.

Harden and Tungai both scored tries in the Jillaroos side which downed the Kiwi Ferns 28-8 at WIN Stadium last October.

Three Dragons selected for Maori All Stars

Maori All Stars coach David Kidwell has selected an imposing pack to lock horns with the talented Indigenous team at Cbus Super Stadium on February 22.

The Maori side shouldn't lack go-forward with Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Adam Blair, Jesse Bromwich, Kenny Bromwich, James Tamou, Kevin Proctor, Briton Nikora, Zane Tetevano and Corey Harawira-Naera among an elite crop of big men chosen.

"We wanted to have a bit of a narrative about being powerful, fast and dynamic. I think the team reflects that," Kidwell told NRL.com.

The backline packs plenty of punch too. The dazzling Kalyn Ponga will play his natural position of fullback after struggling to impose himself on the game at five-eighth last year in a 34-14 loss.

"I think that's where he plays his best footy, he can sweep both sides of the field, he can inject himself where he needs to," Kidwell said of Ponga.

"Touching on that forward pack, he can sniff around for the offload. Talking to him, he's really excited. He doesn't have to worry about leading the team around."

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Bailey Simonsson appear as the likely wingers, while Dylan Walker, Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, Brad Takairangi and Esan Marsters are centre options.

Marsters, who had off-season ankle surgery, is in doubt to play and discussions with the Cowboys medical staff about his fitness are ongoing.

Given Benji Marshall made himself unavailable for Maori selection to prepare for the upcoming NRL season with Wests Tigers, Jahrome Hughes and Kodi Nikorima will combine in the halves.

Brandon Smith and the experienced Issac Luke will share the hooking duties.

Raiders duo Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Joseph Tapine were initially named but were withdrawn.

Kidwell, who has taken over the coaching duties from Stacey Jones, is elated to be involved with such a special fixture and believes his troops can match the Indigenous team in the entertainment stakes.

"We're going to play a bit of an expansive style of football. I thought the Indigenous team, with the experience of having played it for nine years, really caught us off guard last year.

"It's a different concept, it's a different way of playing football ... [But] you still have to execute and have a high completion rate, so it's about finding that balance."

Kidwell hasn't settled on a captain but he said incumbent skipper Adam Blair "epitomises what the week's about."

He added: "I've got some great leaders there and we'll talk about who's going to captain the side. But whoever does, it's going to be a great honour."

Kidwell considered results from an online fan poll before settling on his final squad.

In the women's All Stars clash the star-studded Maori side will feature Kiwi Ferns Krystal Rota, Raecene McGregor and Kiana Takairangi as well as Jillaroos Corban McGregor and Botille Vette-Welsh.

Playmaker McGregor was part of the Brisbane side which stormed to victory in the NRLW grand final last October, scoring a try in the 30-6 triumph.

After playing second fiddle to McGregor in the NRLW decider, Dragons youngster Maddison Weatherall will line up alongside the Broncos star for the Maoris.

Coached by Rusty Matua the side features 10 players with NRLW experience.

Maori Women's All Stars: Harata Butler, Sarina Clark, Tanika-Jazz Noble-Bell, Laishon Jones, Amber Kani, Kerehitina Matua, Raecene McGregor, Corban McGregor, Capri Paekau, Krystal Rota, Christyl Stowers, Kiana Takairangi, Jonsal Tautari, Botille Vette-Welsh, Maddison Weatherall, Geneva Webber, Kathleen Wharton, Kat Wira-Kohu.
