Agreed Gronk. Analysis introduces bias and other human error. This is how science becomes political and contributes to the replication crisis.

Yeah migrants are a sea anchor on the economy.

Not published by a leftard newspaper either.

Migrants earn more than others

The “pervasive myth” that migrants are a drain on the economy has been busted by new Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing migrant employees’ median income is no different than for other taxpayers.

The ABS data, which reveals the nation’s 1.9 million migrant taxpayers generated more than $112bn in total personal income in 2016-17, prompted Migration Council Australia to call for a fresh look at increasing Australia’s permanent migration program, after the annual intake was reduced from 190,000 to 160,000 during the term of the last Coalition government.

The median employee income of all migrant taxpayers in 2016-17 was $49,438, the data reveals, slightly higher than the median employee income for all Australian taxpayers at $49,412.

“The income and tax revenue generated by migrants is critical to our economic growth and to maintain the government’s budget bottom line,” said Carla Wilshire, CEO of Migration Council Australia.

“We need to recognise the power of the migration program to foster growth, fuel investment, build trade linkages and develop new industries. Migration has always been a key economic lever and as global economic conditions weaken, we need to consider increasing Australia’s permanent migration program as a stabiliser.”

Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia chair Mary Patetsos said the ABS figures “confirm just how strong a contribution migrants make to the Australian economy”. “The figures also dispel the pervasive myth that migrants are a drain on the economy and government services,” Ms Patetsos said.

“The median income for migrants is slightly higher than it is for all Australians, which means the tax paid by migrants to help fund our hospitals, schools and other services is also likely to be about the same or slightly higher than the median for all Australians.”

The ABS data examined the tax records of 3.4 million permanent migrants who arrived from 2001 across three financial years. It doesn’t include those not in work, or migrants on temporary visas such as students and “temporary work (skilled) visas”.

The data shows that more than half of migrant taxpayers (61 per cent) held a skilled visa, generating $81bn, or 72 per cent of the total income earned by all permanent migrants. The other categories are family visa holders (28 per cent), provisional visas (5.7 per cent) and humanitarian visas (5.1 per cent).

Humanitarian visa holders had a median income of $32,792.

Ms Patetsos said migrants on humanitarian visas needed greater support as they transitioned to the workforce as their skills might not be recognised.

The ABS data shows nearly one in five migrant taxpayers came from the UK (19 per cent), who generated $21bn in income in 2016-17. India followed with 16 per cent ($18bn), China at 8 per cent ($9bn), South Africa at 5.7 per cent ($6.4bn) and The Philippines at 5.1 per cent ($5.7bn).

Systems analysts, programmers, nurses, midwives, accountants and engineers were the most common occupations

How many drive Uber's for 25hrs a week after work for $14hr. That adds about 15k to their income.

In all seriousness without knowing hours, over time or second jobs this article lack credibility.

Trade and quality has certainly gone downhill due to migrants. How can tilers or gybrockers compete when you get a chinese guy rock up with 4 non English speaking guys who will tile a bathroom for $1,500. Pays then $120 cash and lines his pockets.
I see it in electrical. Little effort or pride. Just slap it in as fast as can and use cheapest shit out there to get the job and out of there.
Unsure if ever noticed who is installing the NBN Gronk. Maybe it's part of the reason it's gone like a big turd....

Those don't sound like very skilled migrants to me.

This  the skilled migrant program does not bring in uber drivers or dodgy tradies. The people you are referring to are here on 12 month tourist (backpacker) working visas, student visas, fudged up 457 visas or working illegally.

I don't believe this is 100% correct. I see plenty of small companies who have started in last 5yrs and there work is very low quality wise and at times borderline dangerous. They are not backpackers (who generally subby to other companies)

Read my post again. There is no doubt that there are dodgy foreign tradies, but they have not been granted border access via the skilled migrant program.

How do you know?
Easy. To get a skilled immigration visa you apply from your current country and you must have the skills and qualifications that we require. Other than nursing and childcare, all the other qualifications are for white collar degree qualified system analysts, accountants, engineers blah blah. Not a sparky, chippy, tiler to be seen.

You make it sound like there were no dodgy tradies before the current migrants(outside of britain) came in.

Interesting comments here. Obviously trades won't like migrants from developing countries as it drives their incomes lower but I would say without these migrants the demand for trades will be less as well. Overseas migrants drive the property market.

Actually in my suburb a particular Korean builder has been getting heaps of work simply because he charges the same rates as he would in say Kellyville. Indeed he may well make 25% more than he would get in the northwest and there is no surprise that they happily pay that margin. He is a fine tradesman, is very tidy, works hard etc. and most importantly doesn’t think of a number an triple it (which is the usual postcode inflation formula). He has been doing jobs for $400k which some cowboys quoted $1m.

This can only exist if there is a market for it. People that buy on price without due consideration as to the the intrinsic value of quality are the drivers here. Without these customers paying for their services, they simply would cease to trade.
