Getting the WA Gov on side and actually helping the NRL with its growth and expansionist ideal is mandatory, not waving the white flag and running away from the fight.

We had them onside, V'Landys has screwed it.

From our Sports Minister " we were blindsided by the comments. If that's the new chairman's attitude we may have to reconsider our strategy for the sport of Rugby League in WA"

Nice work new chairman!

Sure, as if the WA government had a strategy for RL. The NRL doesn't even have one of those.

While ever the Sydney clubs run the game expansion isn't going to happen. There needs to be another super league.

If Perth has a viable plan why not show it? Alot of costs go with a Perth team maybe the backing just instead there

Time will tell, but expansion is a huge issue for the NRL and getting it wrong will hobble the NRL against its main competitor as has been the case over the last 20 years or so.

Club teams are the bread and butter of most sports in our country. On the back of long term development and having first division teams in the non-traditional States for the AFL they have been slowly been able to increase their footprint not only in actual teams, but fans/supporters, juniors(enough so as they have players in their teams that are actually outpost State born and bread players) increased positive media presence(free advertising) corporate support and of course overall revenue base right across the board.

In the same time the NRL has what, finally started to receive close to it worth revenue wise, but very little growth in most other areas compared to the AFL, who set the bar. Sure with Touch Footy and Oz Tag, the figures have ballooned participation wise, but where is the large growth that the AFL have enjoyed in the Eastern States for the NRL in our own home States let alone theirs? Some modest growth sure, but hardly enough to get to excited about.

Expansion is the best way to increase the pie right across the board, so like I said to do very little or get it wrong is a huge negative for any sport. Expansion is vital to the NRL, but we need to get it 100% right. Getting the WA Gov on side and actually helping the NRL with its growth and expansionist ideal is mandatory, not waving the white flag and running away from the fight.

The chairman does what the board wants. 17 teams brings nothing to the party maybe this is a way to shore up the Perth Business case by putting a rocket up them. I doubt the board has changed wanting a 9th game because the chairman has

"We are an inclusive sport, that is why we must exclude Israel Folou".

Not an auspicious start given today's events.

So in summary, based on what V'landys has said:
  • Expansion to new markets unlikely.
  • Invest in suburban grounds.
  • Thinks referees are the biggest issue facing the NRL.
  • Prefers the one referee system.
  • Identified spending in digital department as a cost cutting area.
Great.

my thoughts exactly.

Why is it every time we think we’re about to get on a roll with superb leadership at the top it seems to all go to shit. Time will tell but I don’t think this bloke is gonna be as good as everyone thought he was gonna be........

Add the game being split into quarters to maximize ad revenue to that list soon.

It wouldn't be more than a 3 minute break at the stop of a play.

It won't be like a kick off and all that jazz. Once the ball goes dead after the 20 and 60 minute mark, play will stop.

You don't understand Beave, it's all about the money. And the Sydney clubs.

It stops enough for video ref decisions and players feigning injury when a team has momentum. Randomly stopping the game for 5 minute breaks for channel 9 is not a good idea.

Nor is changing the game to 4 x 20 minute quarters which is being considered. I mean the day you introduce changes to the game solely for TV, you actually do harm the sport.

The fact that the print and TV media had such a hard on for v'Landys should have let everyone know what direction he would take the game.
  • Reduce value of the game
  • Increase revenue for broadcasters
  • Decrease investment in digital media (aka enemy of tv broadcasters)
Everyone thought the independent commission would help put the game first, but it's just the same crap again.

They are not perfect but when they write an article on the official site they will generally have a source and a direct quote. It's like Bizarro world compared to Hooper and Weilder.

That will only happen if the rest of the Commissioners go along with him. He is the Chairman, not the dictator.
