The St George Illawarra Dragons are deeply saddened by the passing of former St George Dragon outside back Brian James last Monday.

James played four seasons (1962-65) with the Red V, and passed away in a tragic accident on his farm, near Capertree. He was 76.

The Blakehurst-born James joined the Dragons as a 19-year-old after commencing his sporting career in rugby league. He debuted at Leichhardt Oval in 1962 against the Balmain Tigers.

James would play 16 games for the Dragons at first grade level, and featured in three-consecutive premiership-winning reserve grade teams (1962-64). He scored a hat-trick in the Dragons' 19-0 win over Wests in 1962 and scored the club's only try in their 7-2 win over the Rabbitohs two years later.

James joined South Sydney in 1966, where he played a further 79 first grade games. James would go on to represent City Seconds, City Firsts, New South Wales and Australia before retiring in 1969.

Everyone at the Dragons sends their sincere condolences to Brian's wife Liz and their three sons, Dominic, Justin and Julian.

Brian was lovely guy and at one stage owned and managed the container terminal at Tempe.
Loved sailing and his original yacht “Swifty” was named after his dad.
Sailed on board it a few times when he had it at the CYC where it was a regular in the Wed twilights.
A humble guy who was good natured and of course a very talented footballer
Will be sadly missed by his loving family and multitude of friends
The world was a better place for him being in it.
