Cost to run a new club

So the football cap is happening this year, all be it a soft one that you can break with a 37.5% levy if you do. Will be interesting to see if A) the NRL can police it and B) if clubs decide to keep spending big.

Salary cap $10mill
Football cap $5.9 mill

That means it will cost around $15.9mill to run the football operations then whatever you spend on the rest of running the club. Given every club has a revenue in excess of $20mill these days you would expect not to see a club in financial strife again?

According to buzz though they payed back $ 3.5m off a $4m loan. have $16m in the bank plus assets.

sharks? Yes they got the final payout on the development and are holding $16.3 million in cash assets. $12mill of that is earmarked for LC redevelopment. In terms of loans they have cleared most of it ($3mill paid back in 2019) with just $750k in loans left over on the books. The club received $1.95mill to vacate for 2 years, if that covers losses incurred time will tell.

The Sharks over the years have been responsible for many financial clusternuts ,which has formed the base for their current situation.nd it's been a friggin nightmare over the years, with 2016 the exception.

Coaches who had their tenures cut short, resulting in big payouts.
Overhyped and paid players who ended up duds.
Salary cap, how's your father routines, resulting in heavy fines.
A "world renowned" sport scientist who showed the club how to improve performance, via
non conventional or "legal" means.Further fines and a black marks against the brand.
Inane acts by the odd player who helped get rid of sponsors, over the years,(I mean who needs sponsors). And one or two then get a payout sheesh.
And a media, hello Buzz, that lapped up any crisis involving the club.

All this whilst well meaning people in the club, and their fans sat back and could do little.

After the COVID-19 sh*t is done and dusted and the team is back at their home ground ,with a brand new leagues club,I hope we can start a new chapter, make a dollar or two, and have club sponsors want to jump on board and fans wanting to become members en masse.
You know it makes sense.

One thing that should come out of this event is a bit of accountability for clubs and publishing of key financial performance indicators by each club. At moment it’s only LC backed clubs and Broncos you can get a sense of financial performance of. Just simple like I’ve split above would be enough and would allow fans of their club to hold the board and management accountable for performance off the field, like we do coaches and players on it.

The NRL clubs should be relying less on the leagues clubs. Those licensed clubs money should go toward grassroots in their areas.

Totally agree, every LC $ needed to run the nrl club is a $ taken away from jnr football. the football cap clearly isn’t working, some clubs are spending over $15million more than the salary and football cap amount! Time for a total expenditure cap for a few years. Most clubs seem able to generate around $23million revenue, and many more than that, so let’s cap expenditure at that with some opportunities to apply to spend more on certain strategic things. Bring in a hard football cap. Let’s get the clubs viable before the tv $’s diminish dramatically.
