Pretty poor start overall tbh.

80k plus predicted for the 1st day of the MCG test
I agree that it has been a poor start to the season so far.

With the exception of the opening BBL match, the other BBL attendances have been well below-par. It was pure greed on the behalf of CA to expand the comp to a full home-and-away format.

Hopefully the Boxing Day test will be the start of an upward trend in attendances.

Another train of thought ,

There has been a lot of out of town matches scheduled early so far, maybe they knew it would on the quieter side, tail end of the school term. Time will tell. Bushfires and heat in some areas dont help either

On the BBL- people aren't going to watch Clive Rose bowl to Jordan Silk every freakin game. They want a bit of quality .

And also, kids are pretty quick to move on to the next trend, it's peaked and it's all downhill from here.

41k+ at Adelaide Oval last night, largest attendance in the BBL so far. But in saying that, there's not much to do in Adelaide in the first place.

Still waiting on a crowd figure for the match at Adelaide last night, but I will say that for a weekend (Saturday night), it looked well below par. It was only a few years ago the Adelaide Strikers got 53k sell-out and 48k for home semi-final matches there. Definitely looked less than half that amount last night.

Crowd at Hobart was very good for a Thursday night. Well done to the Tassies who turned out on a school night that finished at nearly 11pm.

Crowd at the MCG was absolutely pathetic. Especially with a spot in the Final up for grabs. Very bad look on tv, reminded me a lot of several NRL matches at ANZ Stadium. Melbourne, sporting capital of the world MY ARSE. With the exception of the Melbourne derby, the MCG crowds have left a lot to be desired this season, and that is with a winning side and their two key players (Maxwell and Stoinis) available for the duration of this season's BBL due to not being selected for the Australian ODI squad.

This season definitely has been a wakeup call for Cricket Australia, and they have to make big changes next season for the long-term future of the tournament:

- Go back to the previous schedule during 2012/13 to 2016/17 before it got expanded to a full home-and-away season when Fox/Ch7 got the tv rights. 8 games each side, 4 home and 4 away. A reduction from the current 61 games/season down to 36. 32 games in regular season + 4 finals matches (I'll explain finals below)

- Get rid of the 4 vs 5 wildcard elimination match in the finals. It devalues the tournament when you have more than half the amount of teams qualifying for the finals. Should be the IPL finals format: 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, loser of (1 vs 2) vs winner of 3 vs 4 plays the winner of 1 v 2 in the final.

- Marquee rivalries should always be on FTA. It's a joke that Fox got exclusive rights to a match from both the Sydney and Melbourne derbies.

- Scheduling of matches must improve. Having games at 1:15pm in 40+ degree heat in Alice Springs is a joke. I'd only have day games on the weekends and public holidays such as New Year's Day, not during the week (even in the school holiday period), and in places outside of the 5 major test match venues that aren't prone to regular extreme heat (e.g. Hobart, Launceston, Geelong).

- Start on Boxing Day (in Perth), finish on Australia Day weekend. 5 weeks is enough time to finish the tournament during the school holidays.

- Must increase the number of foreign players allowed in each squad. This is crucial for the future of the tournament. During the Ch10 era, the BBL had several high-profiled marquee players: Muralitharan, Sangakkara, Gayle, Kallis, Bravo, Pietersen, Flintoff etc. Now, the BBL has to compete against the T20 tournament in Bangladesh. Viewers aren't going to continue turning on the tele or flocking to the ground in droves to watch Australian club cricketers battle it out.

Agree with everything here, especially import players. The calibre of internationals to come out here in the past couple of seasons has been a major disappointment.
Similar to you I think it's ridiculous that the finals aren't wrapped up before the end of the school holidays. Doesn't make any sense.

I would rather the season wasn't shortened by too much though. I'd rather have something to watch each night than nothing. If it is shortened we need more International matches this time of year to make up for it.
