LOOKING INWARD: The Dragons won't let the Jack de Belin saga be a distraction this preseason. Picture: NRL Photos

IT loomed large over their 2019 campaign but the ongoing Jack de Belin saga won't disrupt the Dragons preparations for next season according to star prop Paul Vaughan.

De Belin was stood down in February under the NRL's controversial no-fault stand-down policy after he was charged with aggravated sexual assault.

De Belin vehemently denies his guilt and mounted a challenge to the policy, with the support of the Rugby League Players Association, in the NSW Federal Court.

The court's ruling came down in favour of the NRL two days before the Dragons were smashed 45-12 by the Knights in Mudgee - a point from which they never recovered.

De Belin dropped an appeal against the decision in September after he and co-accused Callan Sinclair's trial date on the charges was brought forward to March 2 next year.

It will come just two weeks before the start of the 2020 season, ensuring the matter will linger around the Dragons preseason, but Vaughan says his side won't be derailed this time around.

"You can't say 'oh we didn't play well because we had this hanging over us. I think that's done now," Vaughan said.

"Best case scenario Jack gets through and, he's one of the best forwards in the game so he'll improve our team, but we can only focus on the task at hand.

"Obviously there's going to be a lot of media around that because that's the way these things are.

"We just need the boys keen to get into preseason and be a hundred per cent focused and mentally strong enough to get through that."

NRL star Jack de Belin rape trial to begin

NRL player Jack de Belin has pleaded not guilty to allegations he sexually assaulted a woman.
St George Illawarra NRL star Jack de Belin is scheduled to face court in Wollongong for the start of his rape trial.

De Belin has pleaded not guilty, along with co-accused Callan Sinclair, over allegations he sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman at a Wollongong unit in December 2018.

His trial before Judge Andrew Haesler is expected to last a fortnight.

De Belin was stood down by the NRL after he was charged more than 12 months ago.

His case was a major driver in NRL CEO Todd Greenberg and then ARL Commission chairman Peter Beattie introducing the game's "no-fault" stand-down policy.

De Belin became the first player to be sidelined under the hardline rule which allows the game to stand aside players facing serious criminal charges.

At the time, he had earned a reputation as one of the game's premier back-rowers, having made his NSW State of Origin debut in 2018 and was being touted as a future Australian representative.

In May 2019, his Federal Court challenge against the NRL and ARL Commission was dismissed by Justice Melissa Perry.

De Belin, 28, has been allowed to train with his teammates while he awaits trial.

If found not guilty, he will likely be allowed to return to the field in time for the Dragons' NRL pre-season trial against Newcastle in Maitland on February 22.

2 weeks or shorter depending on the evidence etc.
I suppose the burning question for me is, can they prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" the charges laid. Even if they think guilty, or suspect guilty, any doubt has to go in favour of the accused.

Haven't heard anything on the news
It will all come out.
Interested in what his lawyers have to say in his defence.

will be so glad when this ugly business is over with, only 2 weeks now and the long sorry saga is over either way and then we can all get back to focusing on the football.

Maybe it will be partially over because if he loses the case there will probably be an appeal.

Legal argument has delayed the start of sidelined Dragons star Jack de Belin's rape trial.

De Belin and his co-accused, Shellharbour Sharks player Callan Sinclair, arrived at Wollongong courthouse separately on Monday morning for the beginning of their scheduled joint rape trial.

De Belin walked into the courthouse just before 10am with his manager Steve Gillis.

Among those who turned up in support of de Belin were ex-Dragons captain Craig Young and outgoing Dragons CEO Brian Johnston.

Sinclair arrived just after 9.30am accompanied by his lawyers Graeme Morrison and Alicia Boehm.

Sinclair was supported in court by family, including his parents.

The two men are facing a joint jury trial over the alleged sexual assault of a woman inside a North Wollongong unit block in December 2018.

They have each pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual assault in company and one count of aggravated sexual assault in company inflicting actual bodily harm.

The legal argument is expected to continue on Tuesday.
