Allegedly discussed with the club CEOs in perth this week for a 17th club to be brought in for 2023 with clubs getting a bye each week. Brisbane2 allegedly to be the chosen.
Positives
Less financial risk and cost to nrl, less player drain, fills a hole in the Brisbane market

negatives
No extra content to sell in next tv deal
Do fans really want byes? Seem to remember part of reason for titans admission was to get rid of byes
Still no real expansion of the game nationally

disclaimer: source is a Brisbane newspaper so might be qlNd BS.

Well that matches all the rhetoric from PV.. will be interesting to see how they decide which of the competing Brisbane 2 bids (declared and undeclared) gets the nod.

I hope that it's a well-run, clearly defined process where business cases are called for, and independently checked.. and the most robust business case wins.

Phew! I managed to type that without laughing out loud - let's be honest, they'll just give it to whoever promises them the most money up front. Business case be damned.

Oh, and the new team's colours will almost exactly match an existing NRL team's colours too.

The Broncos appear on FTA most weeks. A second Brisbane team will reduce the Broncos appearances on FTA meaning not only Brisbane 2 supporters, but also more Broncos supporters will be taking out a Foxtel subscriptions. Plus it means more metro games for the networks - a major consideration.

Its a very physical game more byes cant hurt.

If we cant afford it how is it a bad thing.?

Maybe we should be looking at bringing in a team from the pacific and then selling the tv rites to Sky Pacific?

It's probably the softest, easiest, most conservative expansion option imaginable - and not really expansion at all, given that it's just giving Brisbane a true cross-city derby (something that should have been a permanent part of the league since 1995), and not EXTENDING the top tier's footprint.

To suggest we bring in a Pacific Island team is a bit bizarre, given that the population is sparse (which island would you base them on?) and the money it could earn is less than untapped major centres in Australia ( ie Perth or Adelaide), let alone NZ cities outside Auckland.

There's more content in the sense that there's another Queensland presence for channel 9. This expansion option would purely be about having an extra game a week which would be more engaging to the Queensland audience.

It's not a horrible idea, but from what I remember, Nine would be willing to have this discussion as part of the current deal. Why not do this mid deal, get a small bump, then negotiate for an 18th team for 2023?

What a stupid article, what did they expect? Starting it at 4pm on a weekday in any city would get rubbish crowds

Its like they were just waiting for an excuse isn’t it? Not to mention 75% of tickets sold on Saturday at $45/75 so hardly poor really is it? Love how they ignore the last 8 years of good crowds do jump on a valentines night 4pm crowd.
Got to love east coast RL myopia.
28k for nines in RL city of 6million ok
25k for nines in an afl city of 2million is somehow a fail? Pleeassssse.

is there? With three qnland teams already a 4th one isnt going to give much extra fta games is it? Maybe you can all look forward to Broncos every Friday night and Brisbane2 every Sunday, that’ll please everyone lol

It’s about time Brisbane has a second team after super league/news ltd/broncos knocked off the Crushers.

looks like WA is getting a relocated team

The NRL are exhausting.

There's no real benefit to a 17 team competition except that Nine thinks that this way they can get more content and only have to pay for it incrementally, and remember last time we had a weekly bye, everybody hated it so much that the NRL had to rush through expansion when they weren't ready to expand.

I guess that if they go to 17 teams, it will mean that an eventual move to 18 teams will be a much smaller step. Going from 17 to 18 means 1 more team to fund, which would surely be offset by the extra income from 1 more game each week.

Adding 2 extra teams at the same time creates a feeding frenzy in the player market with two new teams throwing money around like sailors on shore leave and driving up contracts..Not even moneybags AFL brought in their 2 new expansion teams at once..

It makes sense to move to 17 teams first and then add the 18th team at a later time..

However, would like to see the 18th team say 2 years later...I’m hoping that this is the first step in a plan for real expansion..

They will probably kill the Titans or "relocate" and "rebrand" them as part of the comp reconfiguration lol that's NRL expansion for ya

Think 17 teams initially, will mean 18 teams eventually. Doing the tortoise slow and steady.

I'm afraid I disagree with you. Maybe V'landys could have used a bit more tact but if they cant afford it then I totally agree with what he said.

Maybe the game should have had a 2nd team in Brisbane before this. But the league had no control over the events of 1995-.

A bit outside the square maybe but would give the game a much greater presence if it was shown throughout the pacific. If it gave the NRL another TV contract its not going to be a financial drain.

PNG has near double the population of NZ. And most of those are league followers.

I think feng shui experts say having a team at 115 longitude is bad for business and expansion.

Also...They've put money in to Redcliffe stadium...I think we all know the Dolphins are in.
