Obviously Holden is a shell of its former self - but it’ll still be strange to not even have the brand around anymore.

Holden car brand axed across Australia and New Zealand, with 600 jobs to go by June

Updated 8 minutes ago

Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

About 600 Holden employees will lose their jobs after parent company General Motors announced it would axe the iconic Australian car brand by the end of the year.

GM said the brand was no longer competitive in the current market and would be "retired" from sales, design and engineering across Australia and New Zealand by 2021.

GM International Operations Senior Vice President, Julian Blissett, said the decision would mean the "overwhelming majority" of Holden staff would lose their jobs by the end of June 2020.

"This was an agonising decision for us and one we didn't make lightly or easily," Mr Blissett told a Melbourne press conference.

GM officials said about 600 employees would leave by June, while 200 would remain in ongoing roles connected with the company's pledge to offer at least 10 more years of customer service to owners of the 1.6 million Holdens in circulation.

Work at the carmaker's Port Melbourne site will be wound down by the end of June and the Lang Lang calibration facility will finish up in August.

Holden ended its Australian manufacturing operations in October 2017, forcing hundreds of job losses.

Some 700 Holden employees had remained in Melbourne, focusing on designing cars for the Australian market.

Late last year, the company quietly announced it was axing the Commodore and Astra lines, following dwindling sales.

GM said it would now focus on specialty vehicles in Australia and New Zealand.

It’s gonna be weird not having Holden in the nrl at all anymore. I wonder who will replace them as major sponsors for all those different things they sponsor?

No I mean like a full rankings list. Like the ones Kdalymc and I did!
I did.

1. Sharks
=16. Everyone else

Your repeated demands, for something not particularly important, are unreasonable. I disagreed over the best design, based on objective and irrefutable facts, and the remaining placings are trivial. The fact that you two have resorted to threats of violence with objectors proves that your lists were picked based on emotion and not rationally thought out like mine.

Rationally thought out?!? You’ve literally just put one team as the best and then all the rest are the worst! What type of list is that? You’ve obviously put no thought into it. By the way Kdalymc and I are just having a bit of fun by putting those threats! So bro you just need to calm down!

So Holden have pulled the plug.

and the corporate speak they released regarding the future of the Red Bull Holden Racing team isn’t promising.
“We are aware of our commitment and we will work through with Red Bull Holden Racing Team the implications of this decision”.

read, payout. See ya.

will the NRL get a payout with a SoO series unbranded, will Holden throw money at advertising cars no one wants, or do they pull the plug and leave the NRL chasing sponsors?
