A Parramatta losing streak cost Clint Gutherson a NSW State of Origin debut last season, Blues coach Brad Fittler has revealed.

Fittler told Wide World of Sports that Eels captain Gutherson was pencilled in at right centre for the Origin opener last June, as incumbent James Roberts fell out of favour.

But then Parramatta hit a three-game skid before selection, starting with a 64-10 thrashing from Melbourne and capped by a dismal loss to Penrith. NSW veteran Josh Morris got the nod for game one.

"He was pretty much earmarked over in the right centre there for a while, then sort of the middle of the season got a bit away from Parramatta," Fittler said on Freddy and the Eighth.

Evidence that players play rep footy because their team is going well rather than the other way around.

There's might only be a dozen genuine Origin players in the comp - blokes who get picked regardless of their form or that of their club. The others are all just good first graders competing for an Origin jersey with a hundred other hopefuls. We'd have at least six or seven of these.

Hopefully that is the case now but there was a decade of almost the entire QLD team picked regardless of Inglis’s, Chambers’s’s or my friend Dane’s form as examples. Unfortunately NSW tried the same thing but with shitter players

Well there's no need to change a winning team, especially if they're going to keep winning anyway.
