My gripe is that our problems at SGI are all self inflicted in the name of old boys protecting their positions within the club. We should be a major force in the top 4 and we would be if we had professional management and TPA.

If we go back to the Bennett era, we saw a successful SGI under the football manager/coach of Bennett and we did have TPA for a few of our players including Gasnier. club officials expelled from the Bennett management team were Mary and Craig Young who today wield significant influence over SGI.

Undoubtedly so possum , that is indeed the way it would appear. However there were a number of astute coaches available for the right offer , or perhaps more so to the club that had the right progressive attitude year in and year out - in other words always being at the top of the tree .

Even if they didn't want to spend the money on Hasler or Bennet we still had other options.
Obviously Demetriou would be an option but Toovey would also have been a really strong appointment.
Listening to him as a commentator, he is very astute and has genuine knowledge of the game.
A real tyro with laser beam passion.
We could have done a lot worse.
Your right, Toovey would have been a better option than Mary.

Souths lock in succession plan for Bennett with Demetriou to take over from 2022

Next year will officially be Wayne Bennett’s last as head coach of South Sydney.

The Sydney Morning Herald can reveal Bennett’s assistant, Jason Demetriou, has agreed to a new four-year deal that will result in him succeeding Bennett from 2022. Currently serving as an assistant to the seven-time premiership coach, Demetriou has been anointed as the man to lead the Rabbitohs into the future.

Demetriou’s new four-season deal begins immediately and stipulates that he will continue as Bennett’s assistant for this year and next. However, as of November 1, 2021 - the moment Bennett’s three-year deal expires - he will succeed the veteran mentor and take over Souths as head coach for the next two seasons. The club has an option in its favour if it wants Demetriou to continue as head coach in 2024.

There has been ongoing speculation over how long Bennett will remain in the top job at Redfern ever since he switched from Brisbane on a three-year contract. The Demetriou development ends the conjecture and clearly maps out the foundation club’s succession strategy.

I'm finding it hard to comprehend the sheer level of incompetence and ineptitude that you'd have to possess to do worse than Price. Or Mary. They'd have to be the worst coaches in living memory wouldn't they ?
I think Jason will go alright.

I actually think Steve Price has a bit to offer. He’s won 2 comps as an assistant and he’s won a Challenge Cup over in the UK.

Much more than what McGregor will ever achieve.

Not convinced about Price. However there is no doubt that McGregor as part of the coaching team is a common factor in our long run of mediocrity.

I’d register a guess if Price had the likes of Widdop, Hunt, Norman, Vaughan, Graham, Tariq Sims, McInnes, and the like at his disposal, he could achieve better results than McGregor.

Not necessarily saying Price is any good, but he didn’t have a lot to work with and he seems to know more about footy than our joke of a coach.

JD will go well. Highly regarded and is known to be a good man manager and tactically competent. He has the respect of players and is no side kick. Price was a great water boy and Mary well say no more.

How would the dragons Be if JD coached us a few years ago. Much better I would say however JD is smart enough to know he needed more time under Bennett before he took on the job as a head coach.

Another thing that I reckon must be taken into consideration when talking about Price, is just how unlucky he was with key injuries. This comes to mind today after seeing that Cameron King has suffered yet another season-ending injury in the pre-season, probably career-ending this time, playing for Cronulla on the weekend.

Leading into the end of Bennett's tenure, a pretty clear succession plan was in place for some key spine positions, namely: Kyle Stanley and Cam King.

Cameron King was one of the most decorated juniors to have ever played for the club, he'd been blooded late in 2010 and was the back-up hooker for the 2011 WCC. He was the club's long term hooker in waiting. A cruel run of injuries meant he never really fired a shot, and the club was forced to bank on an aging Nathan Fien and a limited Mitch Rein.

Then there was Kyle Stanley, who played 7 games in the premiership year of 2010, as a 19 year old, and stamped himself as a player with obvious class, and potentially a star. A future fullback/five eighth in the mould of Corey Norman... again barely fired a shot.

I think despite the loss of Bennett and the obvious dip after such success, as well as the loss of certain players, there was still a chance there for Price to do ok if he had a bit of luck. Unfortunately he just didn't

Pretty simple

Bennett stacks tge cap in his favour legit and a few players taking under

Then they want their overs with the next coach and the Bennett abyss and sideshow dissappers

It is a black hole after wayno leaves
Yeah Bennett doesn’t create dynasties unless it were with Brisbane. He gets in gets a GF leaves the club in trouble for years. If he manages to win the gf this year and Mitchell goes well, he will be at the Broncs with Bennett when he returns. If he goes bad he’ll line him up with a 4 year deal at Souths before he leaves.

I reckon we would have come very close to winning in 2011 had Bennett not signed at Newcastle. After he signed, we became an ordinary team again. Even Soward said it in the podcast that the wheels fell off after that.

on another note. We’ve had rookie coaches in Brown, Price, and McFlop and have been woeful. We signed an experienced coach in Bennett and won it all. Why are we so dumb that we keep hiring rookie coaches? What has McFlop got on the club that he continues to be resigned?

It's a simplistic way to view things imo. As I mentioned elsewhere it was possible that we could have maintained some level of success post-Bennett, there were succession plans in place and the core of the team was stable - it just didn't have any luck and Price was not up to it. At Newcastle, again I personally doubt Bennett deserves as much blame that he gets there - the Nathan Tinkler situation was a far greater influence on their destruction than anything he did. He still got them to a prelim final in his 2nd year, and may have gone further in year 3 had the Tinkler implosion not occurred.

Also worth pointing out that the Broncos went further in 2009 with Henjak than they did in 2008 with Bennett. Also the Raiders did pretty well after he left Canberra in 1988.

Perhaps Bennett, being one of the greatest coaches in history, is simply a tough act to follow. There doesn't need to be anything sinister about that - he goes all out to win. There isn't much to compare him to - who is at his level in recent times that has changed clubs? Bellamy and Trent Robinson haven't. Hasler maybe? He's had a similar effect upon leaving Canterbury, but the Eagles did make a grand final a couple years after he left.

Perhaps Jack Gibson, generations ago, is the only possible comparison?

At Easts, Gibson won the comp in 74 & 75, prelim semi in 76. In 77 he left and they finished out of the semis in 78 and 79, until another supercoach, Bob Fulton took over.
He won 3 straight premierships with Parra in the early 80's before handing over to John Monie who won another in 86, before the club fell off a cliff in 87.
Then at Cronulla in the late 80's they really did nothing, before actually improving after he left. This gig was more about building for the future than gaining instant success.

Both times he left the respective salary caps were a mess and about to implode due to back ended deals. Dogs and Manly took years and still to recover. Manly made a GF under Toovey but with virtually the same side but the writing was on the wall at Manly their back ended deals and DCE salary was biting hard which decimated their team by the time Toovey was in Year 2 and then was sacked
