He was tested in Nov 2019, so I assume that he thought that it was safe. But they were obviously tested by ASADA whilst they were doing their off season training / rehab.

I know we say this often, but the good players are invariably risk takers by nature. <shakes head>

Why the delay? Did he play in the first 2 rounds?
Yeh.
I find the timing quite bizarre.

Looks like either a) Sharks knew but were trying to squeeze a round or two out of him before suspension or b) ASADA were sitting on this.

plus you ever seen those testers, they all look about 70. Probably took em ages to remember where they parked the car to get back to the lab

FYI a QLD cup player tested positive in August 2019 and was only banned two weeks ago.

Rugby League player receives sanction
4 May 2020
The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) today acknowledged the decision of the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) to sanction athlete Cade Maloney for the presence and use of a prohibited substance.

Mr Maloney returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) from an out-of-competition doping control test on 15 August 2019.

His sample was analysed at the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, part of the National Measurement Institute, which detected the presence of Higenamine.

The QRL imposed a two-year ban on Mr Maloney commencing on 17 September 2019.

Mr Maloney is ineligible to participate in any sports that have adopted a World Anti-Doping Code compliant anti-doping policy until 17 September 2021. He is also not permitted to compete in a non-signatory professional league, or event organised by a non-signatory International or National level event organisation.
