Channel Nine have got what they want - They have the rights for the remainder of the contract for less than it would have cost to just breach the contract. In addition, they also got back scheduling rights.

The positive is the NRL have not extended the FTA deal.

The issue would have been trying to make a deal with Seven or Ten for the short term, or sell long term deal undervalue, should Nine have walked away.

Yeh but the country will have economic uncertainty for a least double that time. Like you, though, I hope we get back control of scheduling for the less dollars.

The real focus of economic recovery will be the relationship with China.

Otherwise, Australia is in a decent position economically. Aussie stock market is up 23% from COVID-19 rock bottom. This point is about 24% lower than the peak before the COVID-19 crash.

For all the talk about COVID-19 scaremongering, everyone seems to love the economic fear mongering.

Life goes on. If the economy shutting down for two months makes little difference to business and stock prices, then it follows that we should be able to take more time off regularly.

Happy days./

The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday with 24 teams in competition for the Stanley Cup.

The tournament will begin with a 16-team, eight-series Qualifying Round and a Seeding Round Robin among the top four teams in each conference to determine seeds for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL paused the regular season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and its remaining 189 games will not be completed. The 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences were determined by points percentage as of that date. Seven teams did not qualify.

Will be more than a little nauseating listening to the pre game Ch 9 promos celebrating the return of the NRL on the ‘Home of Rugby League’ tonight......particularly given the network didn’t want the restart to go ahead......

As a league supporter it’s great to have the code back again.

According to the Australian "Nine told the Australian Stock Exchange that the expected to save $27.5m in each of 2021 and 2022 - and an even greater amount this season".

So let me get this right... the NRL were quoted as saying "There is a contract in place, a legally binding contract..." and yet Channel 9 are walking away with a $90m discount on the 2018-2022 media deal? Are you kidding me?

Guess I was 100% right when I said that 2018-2022 deal wasn't worth the paper it was printed on after COVID-19.

If the NRL have a "legally binding contract" why are they now discounting Nine $90m? The lies from NRL Central just keep coming.

Nine completely bent the NRL over a barrel and had their way with the them.

Take Nine to Court for the $90m if you have to FFS. Enforce the originally terms of the contract. Who lets $90m plus walk out the door if they have a rock solid water tight contract?

The NRL threatened to take the Referees to court to save what $5m?? And then just bent over for Nine to save $90m plus??? Unbelievable.

The NRL have quietly made a brief announcement confirming the new TV deal just before the Broncos v Eels game kicked off -

NRL announces new broadcast deal with Nine, Foxtel
Author: NRL.com
Timestamp: Thu 28 May 2020, 07:30 PM

The ARLC has agreed to new broadcast deals with Channel Nine through to 2022 and Foxtel through to the 2027 season.

The new deal extends Foxtel's for a further five years, with the previous rights agreement having covered the five-year period of 2018-2022.

“I want to thank Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and Nine CEO Hugh Marks for reaching an outcome that puts the fans and the game’s future first,” ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys said.

“Our negotiations were tough but always in a spirit of goodwill and shared ambitions for the betterment of rugby league. We could not have reached our May 28 restart ambitions without the teamwork and collaboration of our partners.”

Foxtel will continue to broadcast all eight games a week this season, with Nine televising three matches per round plus exclusive coverage of the grand final on October 25 plus the State of Origin series in November.

As you can see the article is scant on a lot of detail.

I found an article on Nine's Wide World of Sports website though which goes into a bit more detail -

NRL agrees to new broadcast deal with Nine and Foxtel
By Marc Churches

The NRL has officially secured a new broadcast deal after partners Nine and Foxtel agreed to a long term partnership.

Both Nine and Foxtel have recommitted to the current rights deal until the end of 2022.

The NRL also secured a five-year partnership with Foxtel who will continue to broadcast rugby league for a further five years once the current deal ends.

ARLC Chairman Peter V'landys confirmed the news on Thursday.

"I want to thank Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and Nine CEO Hugh Marks for reaching an outcome that puts the fans and the game's future first," V'landys said.

"I am delighted to have worked with our long-standing partners Foxtel and Nine to reshape and resume the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership. It is significant that on one of the most important days in our game's history, we have finalised the deals to ensure its future.

"Our negotiations were tough but always in a spirit of goodwill and shared ambitions for the betterment of rugby league. We could not have reached our May 28 restart ambitions without the teamwork and collaboration of our partners."

"These deals provide certainty to ensure our 16 clubs remain strong and that we can continue to invest in grassroots rugby league across our communities."

For the resumed 2020 season:
  • Foxtel will continue to show all eight games every round - including five exclusive telecasts each weekend;
  • Nine will continue to televise three weekly NRL matches - Thursday and Friday nights, plus Sunday afternoon;
  • Nine will provide exclusive coverage of the October 25 Grand Final;
  • Nine will continue its exclusive coverage of the three State of Origin matches, to be held this year over three weeks on November 4, 11 and 18.
Nine's CEO Hugh Marks said: "As we approach the kick off for the resumption of NRL season 2020, I want to congratulate Peter on his leadership, and also Andrew for stepping into his role in these extremely difficult circumstances. They have both enabled us to confidently move forward and invest in the future of NRL.

"The team at Nine are in this for the long term and we all look forward to working with the NRL and all the stakeholders, as we continue to build on the success of the game for its long term future.

"Our on-air and production teams have combined to bring even more excitement to the game, further enhancing the experience for the fans at home starting tonight. Let's now all enjoy the game."

No word on the NRL's Digital arm and no other media I can see gives much more detail than what is in the article from Wide World of Sports.

Looks, like we’ve give nine a $64mill (33%) discount this year. Very generous of Vlandys!

$64m savings for 2020?? What?? If that's legit then Nine save:

- 2020 $64m
- 2021 $27.5m
- 2022 $27.5m

A total saving for Nine of $119m. That's a phenomenal deal for Nine.

Imagine what you could do for grassroots league with $119m.

Remember when the NRL tried to pin the future money for Country rugby league on the legal costs (maybe $2m) of taking on the Referees to a 3 panel tribunal at the FWC haha

I gotta say, considering the NRL had a "legally binding contract" in place, it's gotta be the worst outcome I've ever seen. The players gotta be fuming with this approach from the NRL considering it will directly impact their salaries.

How does one have a legally binding contract, walk into negotiations and happily lose $119m? And then doesn't even bother to take legal action to enforce the original contract?

Hey Cactus explain that one for me. How's that rock solid contract you were trumpeting going hahaha

As Packer once said, you only get one Alan Bond in your lifetime... Yet when it comes to the administration of the NRL - the media get an Alan Bond every 5 years
