Todd was under pressure back in February, before Covid hit the world for six. Once Covid hit and the games finances were brought in the public domain, he became dead man walking

As for Smith, unfortunately back in 2015, he only completed half of the tv deal. From memory, Nine got four exclusive games at $925 million, all at prime time slots. That was a better deal for Nine. Of course Fox were peeved off because they were left with undesirable timeslots.

If only Smith completed the tv deal. What was Smith planning to do with the remaining four games?.

They were all under pressure and eventually pushed out because they weren't singing to the News Ltd tune as V'landys is.

The same happens in politics, if they toe the line they get good press if not they get hassled until it gets too much.

NRL and Fox Sports reach broadcast deal extension agreement
National Rugby League | May 28 2020 4:58PM

Fox League will remain the home of the NRL after the announcement of an extended broadcast deal with Foxtel until the end of 2027.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys and Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany reached the agreement after weeks of negotiations and comes hours before the restart of the NRL season.

The deal, which keeps live NRL on Fox League for an additional five years after the expiry of the current deal in 2022, is a massive win for rugby league fans and Foxtel customers who won't miss a minute of the action.

The deal provides certainty for the next five years with an extended Foxtel partnership until 2027, and the next three years with Nine with the renewal of the existing contract until 2022.

In a media release on Thursday, ARLC Chairman Peter V'landys thanked both broadcast partners and said the agreement was a win for fans, the game and all partners.

"I want to thank Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and Nine CEO Hugh Marks for reaching a broadcast agreement that puts the fans and the game's future first," Mr V'landys said.

"I am delighted to have worked with our long-standing partners Foxtel and Nine to reshape and resume the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership. It is significant that on one of the most important days in our game's history, we have finalised the deal to ensure its future.

"Our negotiations were tough but always in a spirit of goodwill and shared ambitions for the betterment of rugby league. We could not have reached our May 28 restart ambitions without the teamwork and collaboration of our partners."

The agreement with broadcasters continues the current structure:

- Foxtel will show all eight games every weekend - including five exclusive telecasts each weekend;

- Nine will continue to televise three games - Thursday and Friday nights, plus Sunday afternoon;

- The last five Saturday night games of each season will continue to be broadcast on Foxtel and on Nine in the build up to the Finals series;

- Nine will continue its exclusive coverage of the three State of Origin matches, to be held this year on November 4, 11 and 18.

"Foxtel is incredibly pleased to support the NRL through this difficult period and to have footy back on Foxtel this weekend, every round, every game, live and ad free during play," Mr Delany said.

"This is a great outcome for footy, for fans and for players. It's also a hugely important signal to everyone in Australia, and around the world, that we will get through these times, and we can keep players and coaching staff safe while we all enjoy the game.

"The agreement between Foxtel and the NRL extends our existing broadcast rights for a further 5 years and cements our position as the Home of NRL until 2027. It provides the NRL with the certainty to continue to develop the status of the game and gives fans the go-to destination for the best of NRL, all in one place.

"Being back on the field and back on air tonight doesn't happen without leadership. I want to acknowledge Peter V'landys and everyone at the NRL and the clubs for their passion to get the game back. It's been outstanding.

"We have also had incredible support from the New South Wales and Queensland Governments and from Prime Minister Morrison. It really has been a team Australia effort and it shows us all what can be accomplished through co-operation, even in the most difficult of times."

OK, pete's done his job, he'll be gone by the beginning of next season. He never was going to stick around.

No money, probably because it's crap, otherwise they would be bragging. I'm confused was Pete working for Foxtel or Rugby League?

It seems from the outside looking in it was Ch9 that loaded Vlandys gun. When you read Masters article it makes sense if Greenberg had gone to them and told them to F*** off at wiggling out of paying the contract.

That's right, they knew the direction the NRL was going re broadcast rights months ago. The NRL knew FTA was losing it's value and streaming was the go.

Greenberg would actually have got us a good deal.

What annoys me most is we are under the thumb of news for another 7 years. That's the difference with AFL, they run the media not the media run them. It's f*&^^d

Press release out now Right at the End.

The financial details of the deal will remain commercial in confidence.

https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/05/28/broadcast-future-secured-for-rugby-league-fans/

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), Foxtel and Nine Entertainment Co have agreed to a broadcast partnership to secure the long term delivery of rugby league to fans.

The deals provide certainty with both broadcasters recommitted to the current rights period until the end of 2022; with Foxtel extending its partnership for a further five years until the end of 2027.

ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM thanked both broadcast partners for their cooperation and collaboration and said the result is a win for fans, the game and all partners.

“I want to thank Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany and Nine CEO Hugh Marks for reaching an outcome that puts the fans and the game’s future first,” Mr V’landys AM said.

“I am delighted to have worked with our long-standing partners Foxtel and Nine to reshape and resume the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership. It is significant that on one of the most important days in our game’s history, we have finalised the deals to ensure its future.

“Our negotiations were tough but always in a spirit of goodwill and shared ambitions for the betterment of rugby league. We could not have reached our May 28 restart ambitions without the teamwork and collaboration of our partners.”

“These deals provide certainty to ensure our 16 clubs remain strong and that we can continue to invest in grassroots rugby league across our communities.”

For the resumed 2020 season:

  • Foxtel will continue to show all eight games every round - including five exclusive telecasts each weekend;
  • Nine will continue to televise three weekly NRL matches - Thursday and Friday nights, plus Sunday afternoon;
  • Nine will provide exclusive coverage of the October 25 Grand Final;
  • Nine will continue its exclusive coverage of the three State of Origin matches, to be held this year over three weeks on November 4, 11 and 18.
Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany said: “Foxtel is incredibly pleased to support the NRL through this difficult period and to have footy back on Foxtel this weekend, every round, every game, live and ad free during play.

“This is a great outcome for footy, for fans and for players. It’s also a hugely important signal to everyone in Australia, and around the world, that we will get through these times, and we can keep players and coaching staff safe while we all enjoy the game.

“Being back on the field and back on air tonight doesn’t happen without leadership. I want to acknowledge Peter V’landys AM and everyone at the NRL and the clubs for their passion to get the game back. It’s been outstanding.”

Nine’s CEO Hugh Marks said: “As we approach the kick off for the resumption of NRL season 2020, I want to congratulate Peter on his leadership, and also Andrew for stepping into his role in these extremely difficult circumstances. They have both enabled us to confidently move forward and invest in the future of NRL.

“The team at Nine are in this for the long term and we all look forward to working with the NRL and all the stakeholders, as we continue to build on the success of the game for its long term future.

“Our on-air and production teams have combined to bring even more excitement to the game, further enhancing the experience for the fans at home starting tonight. Let’s now all enjoy the game.”

So by the sounds of it, only Fox (2027) and Nine (2022) have been taken care of. Does that mean the streaming rights remain the same until 2022?

And will the NRL finally have a tendering process with the fta networks in a year or two? Would love to see a Nine or Ten bidding battle!

what d9 you mean by streaming rights? Fox, Telstra and nine have streaming rights with nrl having streaming rights overseas. Do you mean digital arm?

there will be open tender by sounds of it for fta, probably negotiates end of next year you’d think.

based on the ASX statement, Nine are paying about 64m this season - of the 115m they were originally expected to pay.

So it looks like that Nine have got a 64 million reduction for this year. As Perth red stated Nine Pay the NRL 185 Million pa, therefor 185- 64 ( the stock exchange advice ) Final amount equals 121 million to the NRL for the 2020 season.
Perth red quote

Ch9 had a contract worth $185mill a year (inc contra) to the nrl, Fox/Telstra $175 mill (inc contra)
let’s see what they end up paying for the rest of it.

Contra was 20 million pa approximate; so lets divided that 10 each to Foxtel/Nine.
