FIJI NATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE PLAN WOMEN'S CLUB COMPETITION FOR 2020

After a two-year gap due to funding problems, FNRL is planning to re-launch a women’s club competition in Fiji.

Fiji National Rugby League acting chief executive officer, Don Notabe has confirmed that there is an active plan to create a women’s competition, potentially based upon the regional zones.

All competitions have been re-modelled due to the impact of COVID-19 but Mr Notabe sees that there is an opportunity to run the women’s competition alongside the men’s competition.

“Since the women’s representative games against the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII, there has been a great deal of interest from our community in seeing more women’s games.

“We are looking at what model is viable for us and we definitely would like to see women’s competition resume as early as this year.”

There has been significant growth in women’s rugby league, particularly in the Pacific region. Last year saw the women’s games played in the Oceania Cup for the first time and Asia Pacific Rugby League as very hopeful of some further Pacific competition towards the end of the year as preparation for a full women’s Oceania Cup from 2022.
