NRL Rd 9 2020 - General Non-Warriors Thread

Who's missing Origin? It's usually the decider/third game this week.

Rd 9 kicks off with a good one tonight, Cows v Roosters. A couple of things there, if the Cowboys lose then when do they pull the plug on the coach? Surely Morgan helps their cause. He's been injured.

The Roosters will want to bounce back from last week's exciting loss. They're actually not that high on the ladder, two losses in a row and they could end the round in sixth place.

Titans at home v Warriors. Two sides at the wrong end of the ladder but with a lot to play for. A couple of consecutive wins and they start putting pressure on other teams that are mid-table.

Rabbs v Wests. That's the mid-table I'm speaking of.

Sharks v Panthers. Match of the round. Can Johnson inspire another big Sharkies win? He's had two goodies on the trot now.

Broncos v Bulldogs. C'mon Dogs. Surely a loss there at home and that's the end of Seibold?

Two even sides with the Raiders v Storm.

Knights could be the ones to stop the Eels run. Newcastle could go as high as second if they win, and as low as sixth if they lose. Manly away to an improved Dragons. Will the Sea Eagles drop further from the eight with their third straight loss?

Fascinating stuff.

One Cowboy whose career has really stalled is Coen Hess.

A few years ago and he was touted as something special. Time to move to another club or what?

Also, good on that Rooster for scoring five tries when he only knew he was playing 15 minutes or so before kick-off.

Green looks like he is on borrowed time up there. Needs a change of scenery.

What's more different to sunny north Queensland then Southside Auckland

The pace and ball movement in this Souths game in the first 20 has made the previous game look like a reserve grade contest

It’s scary what the Roosters could do to some of the bottom sides if they are on form, have already seen them with the Broncos

The Titans win has heated up the Spoon too. It's not an even competition, you're right. Too much top, not enough bottom.

A little bit of spark from Benji. He came on at 14-0, it finished 18-10 to the Rabbs.

Get rid of the bunker, it’s worthless
It's staggering how the blindingly obvious is misconstrued by them. The Jetherington one and then doubling down with the more farcical Simonsen one... just wow

Looks like Hodgson is fgone for season, huge loss

You can cop a referee making a blunder live but 3 howlers in the space of 5-6 games is disgraceful

Every time I think my Storm hate is softening I don’t have to look too hard to find it again, the most cynical football club of all time. The fake knee injuries every time they are under pressure on their own line is pissweak

It's always a LOL when a gun half, this time Pearce, throws a big cut-out pass...to no one and over the touchline it goes.

Then he gets heaps of pats on the head and hugs.

Ps, can someone explain 'The Bunker' to me, and how it differs from what we had before? I.E in the '99 GF remember they went upstairs and gave Melbourne (rightly) the winning try, ditto the Inu try in our Tigers final in '11. Both tries were decided by the 'video ref'.

Now we have 'The Bunker'.

Basically they’ve spent well into 7 figures having a guy away from the ground and any distractions with screens from every angle in front of him to make the correct call, and the centralisation is meant to mean less officials and consistency on rulings, rather than a guy at the ground looking at a TV

We are done for the year, don’t have the points in them without Tom, Walker and Fainu in the spine, toss a couple of forwards in who are missing and we will be too far behind by the time they come back

Thanks Beave. That clarifies it in regard to the Bunker. In the past a video referee was in the stadium, and only adjudicated on tries.

Bad luck about tonight's game, Manly were looking good a few weeks back, before those key injuries.

It's safe to presume the Dogs have the Spoon. They're not improving at all.

Look at all those teams on six points, all five of us, then another three teams on eight points that look pretty average too.

The Knights looked ineffective today too.

We really do need Parramatta to win it, just to make it interesting.

It’s a real battle of attrition this season and will continue to be so until the end. Roosters are the only team equipped like they are to handle it. Canberra’s season is hanging by a thread now too after their setbacks the last 2 weeks

Im quite happy for Parramatta to stay out of the premiership circle lol, Penrith are looking extremely impressive, a factory of juniors they just keep churning out

Given the quality of talent, with first grade experience, that Penrith have let walk or pushed out the door in recent times, they're doing incredibly well... I know it's not apples and apples - but compare the way Gould and Griffin left that club to how Kearney et al have left us...

Would love to see a battle of the West GF, but the Roosters and Storm are still the two favourites imo

Yeah Gould gets criticism for not achieving the 5 year plan etc but look at the conveyor belt, they just keep rolling them out relentlessly. They can let Maloney walk and have 4 guys like Cleary, Luai, May and Burton fighting for the halves spots, huge depth. To’o our and the new winger has speed to burn and grabs 4 tries on debut. Can see why Ivan was so keen to get back there even if it did hurt his reputation

Parramatta should be in a similar position junior wise but have relied on buying people in from other clubs to get where they are

Even with the injuries Roosters are the pick of the bunch, the endless salary cap helps, but their system gets the best out of players too, Morris boys the best example of that, you’d think they were 24, not 34

Penrith's junior system is absolutely flooded with talent that is coached well. We might have the guys with the physical talents etc, but our pathway is vastly inferior. Our coaches aren't the standard of the Sydney-based ones, the level of competition isn't there, and there's just no comparison. Until someone has the balls to start running our feeder programme out of Australia, that'll never change. Compare the 1st XV structure in NZ to league, it's just not in the same stratosphere. All the talent goes to rugby, some of it leaks over to Aus for more opportunities and what's left comes here, and most of the time it gets underdeveloped.
