Penrith teenager Charlie Staines, who scored four tries in his debut NRL game on Saturday, has been stood down after breaching the coronavirus protocols.

The Panthers announced on Monday the 19-year-old hosted 10 people at his residence on Saturday night, hours after his sensational debut against Cronulla.

“The visitors included his parents, his sister, the parents of his partner and four friends,” the statement read.

“Current NRL biosecurity protocols stipulate players can host up to ten visitors at their place of residence each day however those visitors must attend in groups of no more than five.”

Staines then also had to go to hospital at 2.30am as he suffered lockjaw, which the club says he has battled previously.

Earlier, Canterbury has been forced to stand down young centre Jake Averillo amid a coronavirus scare.

The rookie Bulldog has been caught up in a COVID outbreak which centres around the Crossroads Hotel in western Sydney.

He told the club his family had dinner at the pub on July 3. On Monday, health officials revealed 13 new coronavirus cases in Sydney can be traced back to the hotel, and hundreds more people are being tested.

Averillo will need to get tested and in the meantime he’s been stood down and will not be allowed to enter the Bulldogs’ bubble until July 19 at the earliest.

It comes only a few weeks after Canterbury forward Aiden Tolman was forced to get tested and self-isolate after a teacher at his child’s school tested positive for the virus.

On Sunday, Eels debutant Stefano Utoikamanu accidentally breached protocols when he hugged and socialised with members of the crowd after Parramatta beat Newcastle.

The Eels are also waiting to receive results of tests from those crowd members before the figure out how to handle the young prop.

I don't want to hear another "Oh well the public are doing it anyway"

We're lucky the NRL have been up and running since May, keeping players in a bubble but I do fear we'll go backwards, just like here in Sydney.

AFl should move everyone to WA and NRL to NZ. Two most isolated places and most likely to be covid free of CT. Otherwise I can see both comps shut down again within a couple of weeks unless Vic and NSW can get on top of it.

4 clubs in Townsville
4 clubs Sunny Coast
4 Clubs GC
4 Clubs Brisbane

Rip the band-aid and move everyone to other states now. Before the weekend. Delay this round if you have to.

Sounds dramatic but the reason why NRL is killing it this year is because Peter V'lad went on the front foot early on, leaving other codes scrambling. No point waiting for the inevitable - get moving with it

Id rather continue the competition in say Mt Isa than suspend the competition

I wish people were following the rules to begin with.

NZ is all but free of the virus and can have full crowds (?), what better way to make the best of a bad situation, blast NZ with exposure to league, and say thankyou to the Warriors?

Potentially a big health risk for NZ bringing hundreds of players and staff over but....

If they agree it would be an awesome thank you to the Warriors and a shot in the arm for NZ Rugby League. QLD is another possibility but with less noticeable benefits.

NZ Govt would likely play hardball though.
