The St George Illawarra Dragons are deeply saddened by the passing of Jersey Flegg player Stevenson 'Stevie' Upulasi.

Upulasi joined the Dragons' Under-20s squad ahead of the 2020 season after spending the year prior with St George's SG Ball Under-18s team.

Prior to joining the Dragons, Upulasi spent three seasons in the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks junior representative system.

The Dragons and Sharks will observe a moment's silence prior to their Round 11 clash this weekend (Saturday, July 25).

The Dragons send their sincere condolences to the friends and family of Stevie at this time.

St George Illawarra are in mourning after under-20s player Stevenson Upulasi[/a] died in a car crash on Monday night.

The up-and-coming front-rower was in his first year of Jersey Flegg at the club after playing SG Ball for St George in 2019.

A Cronulla junior, he moved to the Dragons at the end of 2018 and was only denied the chance to play more this year due to the pathways shutdown from the coronavirus.

Dragons fans were heartbroken to learn of the accident which claimed Upulasi’s life.

Tributes flowed on social media, with Instagram user Claire Arthur paying tribute to the young star, who was a close family friend.

“The most beautiful, humble soul you could ever meet,” she wrote.

“The loud giant that made anyone around him feel safe and loved. The funniest and weirdest boy I know. The greatest Son, brother, cousin and friend anyone could ask for.

“You were our son Mia. We loved you like a son and you will always be my massive overgrown Son.


“He was our kid’s best friend and brother.

“I miss your contagious laugh and your loud voice. I miss your company and I miss our chats. We just miss you Mia. Love you forever.”

The Dragons and Sharks rugby league communities have been rocked by the tragic passing of one of their most promising juniors.

St George-Illawarra Jersey Flegg player Stevenson ‘Stevie’ Upulasi was killed in a car accident while travelling along Heathcote Road in Sydney’s south on Monday.

The 19-year-old was a hugely popular figure among his peers and who excelled as a talented front-row forward.

A member of the Gymea Gorillas junior rugby league club, Upulasi was selected in Cronulla’s Harold Matthews Cup team in 2017 and 2018 before joining the Dragons in 2019.

With the world at his feet, Upulasi joined the Dragons’ Under-20’s squad this year.

Members of the Dragons under-20’s squad were informed of the devastating news on Tuesday with grief counselling offered to the group during a meeting on Wednesday evening.

The Dragons and Sharks will observe a moment’s silence before Saturday’s local derby at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
