That would be like merging Manly and North Sydney ...and we all know how that turned out geographically it was a good fit but that was it way to much history and animosity to make it work ... besides we have done enough for the NRL merge Souths and Cronulla or relocate Canterbury.

When it comes to future team mergers or possible relocations, St George Illawarra is actually one of the safest clubs.

The hybrid leagues club – corporate ownership model is lower risk and far more sustainable than the solely corporate model (Melbourne, Warriors etc) or the solely leagues club model (Bulldogs, Panthers etc). And as for the benefactor model (Manly and Souths), I fear for both of these clubs when their respective benefactor elects to walk away.

St George Illawarra also has a strong RL history in both regions and the Illawarra bring a sizable junior nursery to the JV, which benefits the entire competition. The one area that we do not compare favourably is our administration, however this would change with the appointment of one strong and experienced sports administrator (CEO).

In terms of future mergers, Rooster and Souths must come into consideration. Even though the Roosters are enjoying their current success, they owe it mostly to an excellent administration. When the current regime retires, there is no guarantee that their successors will achieve the same results. Despite current perceptions, the club is not a financial powerhouse in terms of revenue streams or asset base and Mr Politis’ millions are his own personal fortune not that of the club. As for Souths, they will be in world of pain when the Gladiator decides to move on.

In terms of other clubs with less financial resources and/or social capital than the Dragons, Manly, Warriors, Sharks, Gold Coast and even Newcastle would be well behind.

In spite of what the club has gone through over the past decade, performance wise, the Dragons (club, sponsors and supporters) are resilient and the club is safe for the long term.

Brad fittler suggesting saints cronulla merger to become superclub.
He also said tigers and Panthers as well.
A big NO from me, would hate for it to happen.
He should have also said Easts and sourhs to merge.
Both suggestions are ridiculous and driven by agendas within the NRL inner sanctum.
St.George is still reeling from the last "Super Club" merger.
What makes Fittler think that a second merger will somehow fare any better than the St. George and Illawarra effort?
The answer is to re-locate Cronulla.
Penrith are never going to merge nor do they need to.
The Tigers also don't need yet another merger.
The NRL are negligent because the top heavy Sydney market is part of our history and they have not managed expansion in a sensitive and elegant manner..
Why don't Easts and Souths merge? Why isn't that a logical merger?
Simply because you can't wave a corporate magic wand and eradicate 100 years of passion and support.
The answer is re-location not mergers. Not one has been successful.
West - Tigers, St.George - Illawarra, Manly - Norths...all flops in terms of results with total disregard for the fans and the clubs' history..
"Super Clubs" my a--e!!

No one ever seems to suggest mergers or relocation of their old club. The Roosters, with no fans, no juniors and a city of millions that hates them could move anywhere and all but a few people would actually give a shit.

Port Moresby Roosters sounds good.
But actually they are a business model that works because they are properly funded, have excellent board management and a high quality coach.
They are showing the way to ALL the remaining Sydney clubs how to avoid re-location and mergers.
In theory, and with Easts as a blueprint, all Sydney Teams could survive and flourish.
Then expansion could occur with new clubs like the Firebirds.

Dragons Sharks merger is bound to happen. Either that or they both go to Perth. North/South Perth etc. They have beaches there so really its the same thing.

Only one way to fix the mess that is Western Sydney. Excommunicate the Eels and Tigers from the competition and rename to Western Sydney Panthers. I'm okay with Eels/Tigers still being used as feeder clubs like North Sydney. Also still sell the jerseys for nostalgia purposes. Peter Wynn will make a killing.
Queensland team, mortan bay sharks, has shown interest in taking the cronulla sharks and merge, play out of Brisbane

Freddy has a low IQ
though he should mention rorters and Souths joining.

Cronulla will likely go broke with a scandal or move to Perth and then SGI will simply take the region as it once was.
