well in that case let’s just send out two teams of 13 players without rules. Or 11 players, or 6 players, or 3 teams...

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to at least do most things over the off-season and with reasonable warning to parties about what the rules are going to be.

It’s just good governance.

There were a few things that needed to be done on the fly this year due to covid. This really wasn’t one of them though.
A large % of our biggest rules changes are midseason changes.

Of course this is something that needed to be done on the fly, what a dumb post. How often do teams pull out of competition in Rugby League around the world? There was no other time this decision could be made.

It’s the same sport and his contract is indicative of how much overseas clubs value him
The NRL is willing to break their own rules to bring him here

Who’s the highest paid player in the NRL today? DCE, Tedesco, RTS?

None will command the same rate in that market, so that’s why we shouldn’t just ignore his current contract.

His current contract makes it well informed speculation
It is a lower level comp and his salary in the Super League is a unique situation due to the team he joined and the exposure he could bring them. He is not being paid $5m by the Wolfpack for his playing ability, that is the key point here. His value off the field isn't as big for any NRL team as it is for the Wolfpack. You know that, everyone knows that and you guys are only arguing this as it is the Roosters.

it is relevant though because he’s being paid 5x the amount of the top tier players in this comp. (the best comp in the world no less)

That unquestionably puts him in the top tier.

You don’t go paying a nuffy 5 x the rate of the best player(s) in the game.

you can argue that he wouldn’t get 5 million here, that is fair. However it’s not reasonable to say that he wouldn’t be in the top tier of players if he was offered at auction on the open market.
It's completely reasonable, he is 35 and looked out of touch in a much lower level of competition. You are arguing for the sake of arguing which appears to be your mo around here.

Well we didn’t need to accomodate him, did we?

In fact a Roosters player got moved on to make room.

The fact that his team stopped playing doesn’t need to effect the NRL.

But we are still simultaneously being sold the line (by PVL nonetheless) that we need a player of his caliber in the game.

Wish you people would make up your mind

Is he shit or not?

Why are we changing the rules so some hack can get a game? Why is it important?

Does he not have any of that value in the NRL?

So they bypassed every top tier player available to them to sign some shit merkin that can’t play?

The truth is he is considered a top tier athlete in the market. I’m not sure why that is so controversial.

You people? Where have I said he is still a great player? I think he should be allowed back as the Roosters can fit him in their cap with a fair valuation on what he is worth. Not some artificial figure someone paid him to make a big splash overseas.

Not the same value he had for the Wolfpack, a side going into its 1st season in the Super League playing in a completely virgin market.

Some old player that is a dual international that has a more global name than any Rugby League player, they paid for his past exploits that created his name, not for what he can do now.

Well we are.

But we’ve thrown the cap and operating rules out the door to do it.

That’s fine if you don’t care about credibility, fairness or governance.
No we haven't, as an NRL player he is worth about $600k a year, that is what he is being paid.

so they’ve put some bloke who is pretty shit, front and centre for the franchise on a contract that is 5x higher than what the best players in the world are earning...

If I was in Toronto I’d be wondering why they didn’t sign someone who was actually good.

well there you go, so he is actually pretty good. He is actually worth good money.

you know, there are probably 50 internationals from both codes that could have fulfilled that role.

No one knew who Sonny Bill was in Canada. Yet this busted ass hack was going to lure uninterested Canucks over to League with a geriatric performance. Sounds like a good sell. What mysterious marketing allure he has.

I didn't say he was shitty, said he is worth about $600k which is far from shitty.

Yeah he is pretty good, not $5m good, not even $1m good, he isn't going to win you a comp anymore. He is about $600k good, but the Wolfpack bought him for other purposes.

when they could have easily lured a $1mil good player for that price

or paid significantly less for a $600k player.

Yep some people aren't too smart, but he wasn't given $5m to play football, you know as well as anyone that wasn't the case. No one is paid $5m to play Rugby League.

Yep, and all that added value to the club’s marketability is usually not discounted from the amount counted in the cap.

But for Sonny we are discounting that value. He’s the only one in the comp assessed on strict playing value, apparently.
