But it’s just the bounce of the ball you see, we only have to win 8 out of the next 7 to make the top 8...

Not a quitter, but definitely a professional loser...

That reminds me of one of the most absurd of his public utterances -last year in round 22 when he swore you could still make the 8 from second last.

It was about the same time that all these senior players started appearing in the official press backing Mary to the hilt.

“ Mary is good, the team is bad....Yeah right... you lazy imposters.

It was shameless, humiliating and deeply embarrassing.

More sharks waving their fins at Mary as he jumped over them, out of control and missing a ski.

Sowie cut loose soon after.

I personally think Vaughn actually did this on purpose as another indirect sign of player unrest within the playing group. I also think if McFlurry ( all fluff & no substance) is still here next year Vaughn will be our next player gone for sure. Did anyone else see McFlurrys post match press conference . He could not help himself giving his golden child a wrap. The reporter was actually highlighting & praising Zac Lomaxs game & McFlurry says yeah but Euan Aitken Is doing some great things on the other side of the field too. Is he watching the same game !!! Aitken stuffed a certain try once again because he didn’t / can’t pass the ball . McFlurry is out of control FU#K HIM OFF .
Yep saw that and nearly puked. He actually bombed 2 tries and of course allowed the chooks to score the winning try when he stood there like a bag of potatoes and refused to take a regulation bomb at 16-10 with the game in the balance with 15 mins to go

There are 7 rounds left of our season. If we sack him now his 800+ salary goes into next years cap for staff. Hard to attract a top-line coach when you can only offer peanuts next year.

Wait until 1st Nov, then, as it has been widly reported, we are only in for 50% of his 2021 salary. With this we could attract a reasonable level coach.

For arguements sake lets say we would have 400 - 500k to lure a prospect.

Would you pay a rookie that much? And do we really want or need a rookie?
Would Wane sign on for this amount?
If Flanagan is cleared would he accept this $$.

I believe any of the deadwood coaches would, however, they are dead wood for a reason.

Whatever the outcome, the must have is the final 80 something days of McGregor.

A lot of people just won’t make it to November.

Death sentence.

Some good points.
First issue is McGregor must go. Not just a failing team, but no one will come to the club either.
Second issue is who replaces him. If it's Dean Young, then it's just more mediocrity, and the club telling everyone it is happy to be a bottom half of the ladder team.

Wane has stated publicly that he is prepared to take less coin to get an opportunity in the NRL and tells a story about how he has done this much in the past.

We need to lock him in asap before some other club with proper leadership does...

It was not that long ago that each time the Dragons lost a game that I would feel gutted .
But that feeling is no longer there , a definitive indication that the Big Red V is a nothing club .
Mate - I would look forward to the games, ride every decision, scream, swear and carry on watching them play each week. It would take me a good 3-4 days to recover from a loss and a win would make it a good week.

Now? I don't really care. I don't mind losing as it's one loss closer to that imposter getting the sack.

I've said this before but the day he gets the sack will be close to the 2010 GF win (for me anyway).

Mary has to go. The only way it'll happen anytime soon is if our top players ask for immediate release (vaughan, frizz, mciness etc.) Or if players come out and voice their displeasure with the coaching staff and game plan. I hope it's the latter as I don't want to lose our good players. Mary is not capable of being a head coach and it's clearly evident on team performances over numerous years.

I really hope we reach out to demetriou (current souths assistant) and offer him an immediate position. I know he's taking over souths after Wayne's gone but an opportunity to coach an nrl side immediately might be too good to refuse.

I finally just listed to the idiots press conference
He is truly a dead set flog

Apart from that gobsmacking comments about Lomax and Aitken , the way he threw PV under the bus reakes of a “ Coach “ who has lost the dressing room.
The bounce of the ball , FMD.
And the mention of the WhatsApp group chat made my blood boil.

seriously - the Roosters had 1/2 their team out

When was the last time he took responsibility for loss , he just blames everyone else.

What's JA. I've read comments about his presser being a stinker, so I've avoided it. Surely the players will speak out against him soon enough.

2020 version of Latimore. Merrin has been worse than useless. Rather see Blacker getting a run looking to the future or Ellis who looks like a big body. Did well for his 18 min cameo. Time to dust off your dancing shoes champ and walk into the sunset. C ya Mez

At least Lattimore knew how to play marbles - ask Cameron Smith how he took his bag away .:p

McGregor not mincing words on Vaughan breach
Dragons Den
r0_20_4422_3184_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

NOT HAPPY: Paul McGregor didn't hide his disappointment after prop Paul Vaughan was stood down for breaching COVID-19 restrictions on Thursday. Picture: NRL Imagery
DRAGONS coach Paul McGregor revealed he hadn't spoken to stood-down star Paul Vaughan in the lead-up to Thursday's loss to the Roosters, but made no effort to hide his disappointment with his star prop's actions.

Vaughan found himself at the centre of a storm on Thursday after going out for breakfast in contravention of the NRL's strict biosecurity protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

It saw him immediately ordered into a 14-day quarantine period, forcing him out of the 24-16 loss to the Roosters and also ruling him out of next Friday's clash with Parramatta.

It was a disruption the Dragons could ill-afford with their finals hopes hanging by a thread, and McGregor didn't mince words in the aftermath to Thursday's defeat.

"We're well aware of what our responsibilities are, we talk about it consistently, so there's no reason for it other than it was selfish behaviour really," McGregor said.

"I haven't spoken to him. We've got a WhatsApp group and I explained the punishment that's been handed to him by the NRL, then concentrated on what we needed to do today.

"It's not what you need from one of your senior players, someone that's important to your footy team. It's disappointing if it was anyone. It's just a behaviour that you shouldn't do.

"We spoke about (doing) whatever it takes and doing the right thing by one another, making sacrifices and that's just one of them. The game's done a lot to get back going so we've got to be respectful of that."

Vaughan's presence was sorely missed in the middle of the park, with Siosiua Taukeiaho producing a dominant 80-minute effort in the absence of a number of other stars.

The Dragons forwards depth will be tested further in the coming weeks, with Tariq Sims leaving the field midway through the second half with a shoulder injury.

Young-gun Jackson Ford could also be looking at enforced stint on the sideline after being placed on report for an ugly looking trip on Roosters star Luke Keary,

"I did see it, the leg went out, no one was hurt, he didn't hit him so I'm not sure what will happen there," McGregor said.

Opinion

Has Paul McGregor done enough to survive?

Scott Pryde

Expert

They might have been in the game, but the almost here, but not quite good enough narrative is beginning to wear thin with fans of the famous club following a great win for the understrength Roosters in the Round 13 opener.

Let’s rewind for a moment. It’s Round 4, and the Bulldogs have just used Bankwest Stadium to register one of only two wins so far this season over the Dragons.

Not only that, but they won by 20 points, the Dragons going their second straight game without registering a try.

A clearly under-pressure Paul McGregor, under no illusions about the fact his job was hanging by a thread, fronts NRL 360 on Fox Sports and says as much.

But just days later, the St George Illawarra Dragons board declare the coach has their full support. Since then, the almost daily media pressure has eased, and while it does have to do with an uptick in form for the Red V, it doesn’t mean they are in the clear.

They are going to miss the finals again, meaning the club have only made the top-eight once in the six full seasons McGregor has been coaching in Wollongong.

That record would have seen just about any other club move on their leading man, but the Dragons, historically, just don’t do that. Nathan Brown survived for a very, very long time. Steve Price was there for too long. And now, McGregor was given possibly the strangest contract extension in the history of NRL coaching.

And while even the biggest haters of the man nicknamed Mary will begrudgingly admit the Dragons have shown signs of life, they are still losing games they should be in a position to win, and last night’s effort against the Roosters was their third on the hop.

Against the Sharks and Rabbitohs in the last fortnight, the Dragons have led at various points and should have won both games, but didn’t, before losing to the Roosters last night.

Normally, losing to the Roosters is part and parcel of the season for most sides, but it shouldn’t have been on Thursday.

Their list of outs from the top 17 was staggering. No Josh Morris, Brett Morris, Daniel Tupou, Sam Verrills, Victor Radley, Boyd Cordner or Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, while Kyle Flanagan had been bafflingly dropped during the week.

That’s eight of the top 17 not on the park for the Tricolours. The Dragons may not have been quite at full strength either, and no doubt the late exclusion of Paul Vaughan due to a COVID breach hurt, but after recovering from letting in the first two tries, they grabbed the momentum, only to frustratingly let it slip yet again.

Given the injury toll, credit has to be lumped on the Roosters, who again weren’t at their best, but again found a way to get it done. Trent Robinson is an absolute master of his craft, in terms of being able to have his team ready to play, seemingly no matter the circumstances.

But it again goes to show the difference between a good coach, and a not-so-good one. Is there any chance in the world a team coached by Robinson or Craig Bellamy would have let last night’s game slip? No. Not in the slightest.

In the face of adversity though, Sio Siua Taukeiaho ran for over 300 metres, Joseph Manu stood up and Luke Keary just kept doing what he does best. The Roosters are clinical footy team, and while they won’t win the premiership with so many players out, the Red V were taught a footy lesson last night.

Or more specifically, McGregor was taught a footy lesson in how to prepare a side. It’s not the first time Robinson has pulled off a feat like that in the last six weeks, either.

Was it the right move for the Roosters to drop Kyle Flanagan? Well, it doesn’t look like it right now, given their at times stagnant attack, but that answer will reveal itself properly in the next few weeks.

But, back on the Dragons, and they have made selection moves of their own in the last few weeks which have re-invigorated the team.

One of the key criticisms of Paul McGregor was his inability to use a very strong junior development system at the club, but all of a sudden, Matt Dufty, Zac Lomax, Euan Aitken, Tristan Sailor, Blake Lawrie, Jackson Ford, Jacob Host and Josh Kerr are all in the team.

So while there is cause for positivity moving forward at the club, it would appear on the surface that McGregor is still holding the Red V back from achieving their true potential, which, at a bare minimum on paper, should be well inside the top eight.

Even their improved attack has to be taken with a grain of salt, given the rumours and speculation that Shane Flanagan is having a heavily increased role in running that part of the club.

While the media speculation and pressure is nowhere near what it might have been a few months ago for McGregor, it’s still there, and more losses of last night’s nature will continue to heap it on him.

The plight of the Dragons coach has been buried under that of Paul Green, Dean Pay, Stephen Kearney and Anthony Seibold as the NRL coaching merry-go-round comes to life.

But Mary shouldn’t be forgotten. He hasn’t done nearly enough with the tools at his disposal while in charge of the Red V.

If the club won’t sack him, then he still has time, but if his future is being judged on the results of 2020, then the last three weeks of competitive, but not good enough, won’t have done enough to save him or the sanity of long-suffering fans, who will watch another finals series without their club in it.

2021 must bring rapid and large change at the Dragons. Thursday night’s game proved once and for all that McGregor isn’t the man who should be leading the club forward.

It’s just wucking well amazing how the maestros media mates go into overdrive to ensure that the ‘ good ‘ word is put out to the public that Paul babes will continue on in his stellar coaching career again next year .

What is the saying - fattening the goose before lopping the poor sods head off ?

The trouble is the media believes that we the humble Dragon fans are the gooses !
